Samsung's new plasmas will do 3D for much cheaper - Update: $989 for 50-inch 720p
Looks like Samsung's 3D Blu-ray players aren't the only ones coming in cheaper versions, as it's unveiled the new 680 Series and 490 Series plasma HDTVs. Both were shown off in Korea yesterday, though the US website only features a product page for the 50-inch PN50C680 so far, showing off its 1080p specs and DLNA access. You will give up a few features from higher end plasmas, which add picture-in-picture, widgets, a higher contrast ratio and slimmer designs to the mix. The PN50C490's situation is a bit murkier, but FlatpanelsHD reports it will be the first 720p 3DTV of the current generation. With current series 4 plasmas retailing for around $720, it could also be the first flat 3D set to crack (or at least approach) the $1,000 barrier -- if you're willing to miss out on the extra pixels.
Update: A listing on ABC Warehouse shows the PN50C490 with a few specs plus $1,099 MSRP, but already up for preorder for just $989. Perfect for some PS3 gaming or ESPN3D watching, right? Of course, as a few commenters have mentioned, you can get a 60-inch 1080p projection 3D capable HDTV from Mitsubishi for even less, so that's hardly your only cheap 3D option. [Thanks, John Doe]

She's hot :-)
@toaster99
Indeed.
@toaster99 Need more pics of the Korean girl.
@toaster99
My Samsung TV didn't come with one of those!
@toaster99 aglee
@htd ha ha ur so funny htd, typical wt
@toaster99 but will she be under $1,000?
@Peter Pan
She *might* be under $1000 (per day) after she has fluttered her eyes at you to exhaustion whilst using your Amex to purchase this season's entire collection of LV, Salvatore Ferragamo, Chanel, and Alexander McQueen. But that will only last until next season's line comes out.
Clearly you've never dated an Asian girl.
@toaster99
Damn! I gotta get me one of those. And I'm not talking Plasma.
@mongoose2 "My Samsung TV didn't come with one of those!'
You should send your complaint to Samsung. They obviously forgot to pack it in the box.
@toaster99
you guys have some weird taste in girls.
any way..i could see it happening.just yesterday i saw a samsung 3d tv for 1400$
@cdf74dc9
Hopefully I'd be the one packing it in the box.
@toaster99 i'm a korean guy of course live in korea. you guys have no idea how korean girls like western guys haha it's not hard to see hot girl (like this) have relationship with normal western guy COME ON korea and get her
@toaster99 1 tv for 1080p and one for 3d gaming since games don't do above 720p with 3d yet and it's cheap anyway so it would still be good
@Ninetysix
Don't you mean Moar pics?
@mongoose2 Amen!
@toaster99 I'm sure with the Korean girl, if you hold her the right way, the bras will go down.
@toaster99
It really makes me feel like a loser to know that Men can't control their hormones on the gadget site I access daily. But I do find this deal on the TV interesting.
@zoo That made absolutely zero sense. Sorry Google Translate sucks.
@lawl
It made complete sense, he was talking about how living over there it's hard for him to see a good looking girl like that go for a guy of western decent.
Maybe they should make Google Read For Me, just for you.
@RhymeMaster
actually i think he's saying he can't believe how much they *do* like western dudes...
@toaster99 no shes not.
@Psyclotr0n
That's what i said lol or at least tried to
@GeneralThade
clearly you've dated the wrong kind of asian girl
At this price, maybe i will consider getting one, no, not really.
I'd pick one up for less than $1000. Just to see if the whole 3DTV experience is worth it. Then later on I'll invest in bigger and better. :)
Why is there always an hot asian girl next to new tvs?
@Sil Mostly because they are manufactured in Asia.
@Sil
what tv?
@Sil
You don't like?
@Sil
Marketing thing...suppose to subconsciously "make" you want to buy the TV except I think it works too much for weirdo557 that he blanks out the TV
@Sil We've all seen a picture of a TV before. Nothing new there. Hot girls never get un-interesting.
@Sil
Your TV didn't come with one Sil?
@Aegee14 its all right
@Sil
Because sex sells.
@ZeCoder
Because Sil wants hot men not women. hehe j/k
This is indeed a great price for a 3DTV and it's already 50-inch no less.
I wonder if plasmas are getting cheaper now since the age of the LEDTV are coming but still expensive. Anyway, enough about the TV let's talk about that woman like who is she, etc. haha. xP
We just want regular internet in our TV's... NO more applications... No need of 3D... is just a plus
I already own a Samsung plasma and the image retention is enough to keep me from ever even considering another one. Sorry for the sour grapes :(
jeez, engadget deletes all references to Pedobear now? come on!
@Psyclotr0n don't.
u can get a mitsubishi 1080p 3d ready dlp tv 60" for under 1000$ off amazon so u missed the under 1k 3d train already
@flex10 "the first flat 3D set" A DLP isn't what most would consider a flat screen. The screen is technically flat, but they're pretty thick and bulky...
How long before this 3D crap is mercifully over? I saw Avatar and Toy Story 3 in 3D and I'm done. Utterly pointless parlor trick that was interesting to see once, but adds nothing of value to ANY movie.
@appsman Then you are going to be sorry to hear that the remainder of the year is nothing but 3D and you can bet your *** that 2011 is going to be another explosion of 3D. On the big screen, on consoles, on cable, on blu-ray. Better learn to love it or get ready to crawl into a cave and hide.
@appsman I'm waiting for some of those PS3 titles in 3d. My Samsung is begging for it's 3D awesomeness to be put to good use!
@appsman - I never thought I'd be a Luddite. I'm an EE, have lot's of techie toys, but I just don't get this. Oh well, at least these TV's still work in 2D and hopefully they are not forgoing *real* improvements (like resolution or dynamics) in order to glue on 3D gimmicks.
@appsman
It won't ever be over.
All TVs in the future will be 3D-ready even if you don't intend on using it. The reason is that it doesn't cost much to add 3D since the major technical requirement to put 3D on a display is a 120Hz an HDMI 4.0.
All TVs will be HDMI4 in the next-year and all will have 120Hz. The only added cost is the shutter-glasses, which they probably won't pack in on lower-cost sets. 3D will be there even if you don't intend on using it.
@appsman yeah i agree. after 10 minutes i find myself saying what's the point? it isn't really adding anything to the story. 3D is the new CGI, another way to hide the fact they don't have a very good script.
@glennc2 What exactly was wrong with CGI? I know many CGI artists who make masterpieces (my opinion) with their tools. I could watch a whole movie without words and just admire the backgrounds and designs they do. 3D is nothing compared to the leap forward CGI was.
Under $1000? Plasma TV or Plastic Surgery? haha
