Verizon's LTE network launching November 15 with two data cards and over 30 markets?

[Thanks, RBF]

@PeDe No. Two separate networks. 3G phones will still run on the 3G network. Some Verizon phones in 2011 will work on the LTE network as well as the 3G network when the LTE network is not avaialble.
Thanks for the input and to think I was considering on upgrading to the Droid 2
I love how Philly is always included in these kind of things. :)
I heard San Diego is one of the test markets
Knowing Verizon, I'm sure there's some additional $25/mo. charge for 4G. There is my poor wallet, bleeding...again...
Reallistically, when are the first lte smartphones expected to roll out?
@here Apparently in time for Black Friday..
@here November 15th?
@here I'll go with data cards and LTE embedded laptops/netbooks first, phones by Spring 2011. That's how most other netwrok rollouts have been...
@here I knew I read that somewhere:
Verizon says LTE phones first half 2011
http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/17/verizon-to-offer-up-to-five-lte-handsets-by-next-may-android/
@vansmack
That says that they will have at least 5 by May 2011. I expect at least one lower level smart phone with LTE by Christmas, then maybe some more in the first few months of 2011.
So what's new? The other cities mentioned are??????? NOV 15 has been known for a while... hofo ya know!
The big cities are obvious, easier to get their high POP value... duh!
My Droid is up for replacement in 7/11, by then I'm hoping there is a nice LTE-supporting Android phone or two to choose from. Or at least known to be coming, so I can plan for it. At the rate Android phones are improving I expect some pretty cool options a year from now.
@megazone Verizon has previously stated that they plan to have at least 5 LTE handsets out before the end of June.
@TheDavid99 Yeah, but we'll see exactly what is actually out by then. Android Gingerbread will be out, which supports an even wider variety of hardware. I'd be nice to see something radical come out.
I'm excited about the world move to LTE in general, so I wanted to see what it would take to get on board with Verizon and be first. It looked like more of the same, premium priced voice plan, data plan, etc. The biggest bummer of it was the 5GB data limit.
I'll stay with a smaller network's plan whose coverage I can live with, and who is more generous with the data allocations, cheaper with prices in general. It's a provider who is milking the extensions to WCDMA(UMTS) a bit more before moving to LTE for an immediate win, but something that should not be rested on.
Once the US moves to LTE, I wonder how much of a distinction networks can really give anymore, since it's likely roaming agreements will be set up between them all. If no roaming agreements are given, then it kinda sucks for everyone too... The roaming problem will probably be solved by each provider launching LTE on disparate frequencies, kinda like how about the time UMTS came around, GSM handsets were coming out cheap and quad band. By the time LTE fruits real handsets in the US, all the UMTS frequencies will be commonly supported. By the time LTE Advanced comes around, all the LTE frequency bands will be supported by common and cheap handsets. And this will be the ways carriers will distinguish themselves.
Either way, I'd like to see if the first Verizon LTE handsets are the big battery sucking clunkers like the first UMTS handsets were.
I live in moderately hostage NY am i gonna get this
VZW LTE speeds won't be much different than Clear/Sprint WiMax speeds, during trials it's averaging 6Mbps with burst to 12Mbps. Clear sells WiMax speeds at 3Mbps, but users are getting 10Mbps bursts. HTC Evo is capped at 4Mbps so it's not a reliable souce for a speed test. WiMax uses 2.5 Ghz frequency so its penetration is rather weak. LTE uses the 700 Mhz frequency so its penetration will be superb. Also WiMax and LTE shares around 70% of the same components, so switching over to LTE won't be a heavy investment, Sprint and Clear is waiting on TD-LTE certification.
@Noelle704
Um, the EVO is NOT capped at 4Mbps. I regularly get 6-11Mbps down on my EVO on 4G here in Rochester, NY.
@Noelle704
8 Mbps in Charlotte with my Evo, thank you very much!

Here you go.. Have fun with that ^_^
Whens verizon going to gave a 4g phone?
To be clear, LTE is backward compatible with GSM.
Thus an unlocked iPhone will be usable on Verizon LTE Network.
This means, never will be will be a CDMA iPhone. Verizon will move its network to LTE international standard.
CDMA is going to death (slow but the end is clear). Wimax was never born (in mobile phone market).
Lol will probably cost an additional 30 bucks a month on top of the current 30 for smart phones
Sprint with WiMax
T-Mobile with HSPA+
Verizon with LTE
at&t with nothing
I know that HSPA+ isn't really 4G, but it's hella fast. I do notice how at&t is out of the loop. I mean not only do they have a crap line up of good smartphones mainly due to the iducttape XD. But now Sprint, and T-Mobile have phones that are on a faster network, and Verizon is about to release a faster network. Other than the iCrap, and 2 year contractual agreements, why is anyone still on at&t? I don't have credit, so Sprint would charge a $100 deposit, T-mobile doesn't charge a deposit, Verizon is $350, and at&t is $490. So it's even more expensive to start up as well as being the second most expensive month to month. Not to mention they are the only one's save for Sprint that has tiered their data at a very low 200MB, or 2GB. Sprint even has 3G at 5GB a month. I am at a lost to why anyone is on at&t, I mean metropcs's basic unlimited talk,text,web for $40 for a featurephone, $50 for a smartphone, and $65 for a Blackberry is better than at&t.
@gigarath pretty sure AT&T is doing HSPA+ as well as a stepping stone to LTE
I don't understand what's "breaking" about this news. I already knew all of this...
@SpaceKyd
It's not breaking, it's exclusive. Gosh!
I went to an LTE VZ event earlier this month for people who have corporate accounts and they said that they are launching in all the cities that currently have NFL teams. That is where it will be first then they will branch out.
Finally, a pre-4G LTE network that will target Los Angeles as a launch market. Looking forward to terminating my AT&T contract in 11 months.
So does this mean that you yankies on Verizon can finally get an iPhone to work? I didn't think that Apple would make a separate CDMA version of the iPhone, but maybe this is the answer. If not, you could always just buy one outright and unlock it..
O2 Germany uses HSPA+ with up to 28 Mbit so the whole HSPA technology has still some potential.
Deutsche Telekom which owns T-Mobile had a partnership with sprint back in the 90s so maybe they merge to a bigger T-Mobile US!?
The Iphone should not work on LTE. LTE is LTE Verizon does not have a GSM network underneath and the Iphone has no module for LTE built in!
It may suck , since VZW will probably use this time to pull the same lame a55 downlaod policies as Att.
Awesome. Let's see how fast can you go reaching you bandwidth cap.
Is it me or is that guy in the pic missing the top of his pointing finger??? . . . Creepy
Clear home and mobile plans start out at a lower price, and the 4G WiMAX upgrade is available in almost 50 markets without an additional price or bundling. You can connect to any Wi-Fi capable device with the ClearSpot. Plus, the plans are unlimited. Sounds like the way to go.
Airports are now a "market"?
Jeez, if we go by that lame definition, Sprint blows them away with what? THOUSANDS of Radio Shack markets?
LOL. So funny how lame companies try to expand PR claims with the help of STupid blog writers..
