Netflix plans discless Watch Instantly on the PS3 by late October, more 'pure streaming' worldwide
It's still a pretty big window, but Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has narrowed down the time until we can expect a disc-free streaming experience on our PS3s from "later this year" to some time before its next earning call, which should happen around October 21. Other notes from the Q2 highlights included a shoutout to Hulu Plus, where Netflix "plans to learn what customers like about Hulu Plus" and use that to enhance its service, as well as the upcoming launch of a streaming service in Canada, and how the lessons learned may be applied to other "pure streaming" offerings internationally in the future. Investors aren't too happy the company missed earnings projections, but we're figuring once they close the ETrade window and pick up a Shockaxis they'll start to get over it.

I just hope its not like xbox live where you have to pay for the extra service (Playstation Plus) just to use something you already purchase (netflix). Oh well my 52" sony can already stream netflix anyway. I don't need my PS3 to stream netflix, I just turn on my TV.
@khartster XBL is not paying for things you already use the entire reason any gaming console got netflix streaming was because of microsoft investing the XBL profits back into improvements
the improvements and special deals with game companies i will say makes it worth it even if i skimp on 1 game a year
BTW 1 game a year for me is nothing, i get upwards of 6 games a year just from September-december, and a nice bit more from febuary-april/june, i dont buy much disc games during summer b/c XBL always rolls out the primo Arcade games, like deathspank

i would like to fomally welcome the PS3 to the club my 360 has been enjoying for years, and look at that now that stupid blue ray player that "made the PS3" is basically usless unless you go to a blockbuster...
and who the hell goes to a blockbuster?
Anywho welcome to the club, your a bit overly fasionably late to say the least i mean you like got lost in the next state late
@23542354 Microsoft had an exclusive deal with netflix. It wasn't optional for Sony
But way to sound like a condescending dickhole. Stop trying to start an Xbox PS3 fanboy war. That is sooooooo 2007
@23542354
Cool. Let's get into one feature since you're talking about lateness:
"I would like to formally welcome the Xbox 360 to the club of built-in Wi-Fi my PS3 has been equipped with for years, 2006 to be exact.
Who the hell wants to run wires all through their homes which potentially cause interference with other devices?
Anyway, welcome to the club. You're really overly, fashionably late to say the least. I mean you like got lost in the next universe late."
Now Netflix just needs to make their service available in Europe, even if it is a "just streaming" account.
@HikaKao
i really think they do need to make a just streaming option for $10/month and then they should take all the money from streaming stuff into investing into expanding the quickness of jumping a DVD into streaming.
even if DVDs get like a 2day showing after a DVD launch and then their off for 2months before becoming a permanent
Oh man Dexter is such an amazing show. I can't wait for season 5.
@Agent007
The last episode of season 4....OMFG!!!
hope they will upgrade there servers, they can be pokey with the member flow....
Where is the Netfilx iPhone app?! Give me that and I'll give you another subscription.
Yay! Hulu can suck it!
They don't have to consult hulu I'll tell them what they need to do is put better/newer content up for streaming. I'm done scrounging around that old crap to find something worth watching.
Personally I've been using the PS3 version over my 360's version. My 360 sounds like a friggin' freight train even while streaming video, but my PS3 is barely a whisper while performing the same task.
Definitely wouldn't mind running the software from the HDD instead of the BD, though. My biggest complaint with the PS3 implementation is, easily, the sluggish interface caused by reading from a disc. Sort of irksome when I go to pause my video, and I have to wait a few seconds for it to pick up on that command.
