The Panasonic LUMIX LX5 is a unique compact digital camera in that it offers superb image quality along with a super-bright lens and increased creative modes. The F2.0 lens is twice as bright as a F2.8 lens, making it easy to produce beautiful photos with a soft-focused background thanks to the shallow depth of field provided by the extra light. In addition to the newly-designed lens, the LUMIX LX5 features an image processing engine that combines technologies resulting in professional-quality photos, especially in low-light situations. Like its predecessor, the LUMIX LX5 features the highly-acclaimed 10.1-megapixel CCD, but it has an expanded dynamic range by increasing the sensitivity and the saturation.
The newly developed Venus Engine FHD image processor enables higher-speed, higher-performance while compiling the Intelligent Resolution technology. The triple CPUs in this imaging engine dramatically speeds up processing while achieving exceptional noise reduction performance. With its high-sensitivity CCD and the brightness of the lens, minimum illumination of the LUMIX LX5 is as low as 3 lux while shooting video.
In addition to capturing high-quality still photos, the LUMIX LX5 can record HD videos in AVCHD Lite, a format that allows almost doubling the recording time in HD quality compared with the conventional Motion JPEG format. Creative video shooting modes include Creative Movie mode, where users can set shutter speed and aperture manually to make even more impressive movies. My Color mode and Film mode are available for more extended expression not only in photography but also in videography. The LUMIX LX5 also features Dolby Digital Creator to record high quality audio and the 3.8x optical zoom is available while shooting video.
The LUMIX LX5 has also been redesigned externally – with a thicker grip making it easier to hold and a newly-incorporated turn-and-push jog dial achieves various selection and setting more quickly. The LUMIX LX5 also features a hot shoe, which allows for the attachment of a wide-variety of accessories, such as an optional Live View Finder which helps shooting under strong daylight with high visibility or an external flash. The 1:1 square format setting is added in the aspect ratio option which can be selected with the switch at the side of the lens barrel.

You need something with manual control. Honestly I'd recommend you to get an entry level DSLR to get the most out of your class, but failing that, a lot of the high end Panasonic and Canon compacts have full manual control available.

There's not many DSLRs (or SLR-like bridge cameras) out there under 250. Most new beginner DSLR cameras currently go for $400+. The Nikon D3000 is one of the newer beginner cameras. You might be able to pick up a used Nikon D40 on eBay for a bit less. There's also Canon, but I'm not as familiar with their line.
If you don't need a full-blown DSLR, you might want a "bridge" camera with a lens that you can't remove. Some of these have a lot less features than a DSLR, depending on model. These can go for around $250-450.

Is it worth upgrading from the LX3 to the LX5?
Now I don't know much about camera's so someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Sony's Nex3 almost as small as the LX5? Wouldn't that Sony make more sense for a $50 increase?
And the second question is how much of an improvement is the LX5 over the current LX3. Enough to warrant the $120 price increase?

The body isn't much bigger, but the NEX takes massive interchangeable lenses. They have a 16 mm pancake that would make the camera look like the LX but most consumers don't want a 16mm prime as their carry around camera. They want something with more reach and can zoom. The LX5 has an effective focal range of 24-120 mm. If you want any kind of zoom with the NEX you need a much bigger lens that takes it out of the pocket cam category.
I was expecting that the next FZ will have bigger sensor.. now that's a disappointment! A mere 1/2.33" Type MOS sensor! Big zooms and HD video are not the most important thing in a camera. I know that it's hard to put a big sensor in that body and preserve the zoom range, but still! I prefer 5x and APS-size sensor (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonydscr1/ anyone) than this!

Panasonic clearly states this sensor has new microlenses (which are a part of the sensor, not the lens) with resulting better DR and high ISO.
So, the LX5 has 10MP, while the rest of the lineup are crammed with 14MP. Really Panasonic? Your competition is Sony's backlit Exmor R sensor. 14MP is actually a deterrent.

Hey! I'm interested in buying the best point-and-shooter digital camera available in the market today, preferably with 1080p video recording capabilities. Price is no issue :-) A friend of mine is going to Seattle on vacation and is willing to bring home a camera to me as a favor. Prices in USA is normally 30-40% lower than in Norway where I live, and I guess the latest models are earlier available there too...

In terms of pure pocket cams, the Panny LX3 vs the Canon S90 vs the Canon G11 had been the rivals in the top of the class pocket cam category. The Leica D-Lux 4 too, if price is truly no object. The Canon don't have HD video though, so probably out of the running for you. That leaves the LX3 as the likely winner, and so long as the LX5 lives up to its predecessor, that means you will probably be best off telling your friend to get a LX5 for you. Be forewarned however, that Panasonic's are not always easy to find in the USA, so you may want to do some online research in to stores in Seattle that stock the camera in advance. Also, the LX5 only shoots 720p. None of the top point and shoots do 1080p yet. So pay attention to the LX5 early reviews in the coming weeks and so long as it has no flaws, that is probably the camera for you.
Dear Panasonic: Why didn't you add GPS or stereo movie recording to the LX5?
I sold my LX3 and replaced it with a ZS7, which has both those features, but miss the f/2.0 lens. Still, I'm glad I sold the LX3 when I did or I probably would not have gotten as much for it.
