Samsung ST100 and ST600 cams take DualView screens to the high end
Cellphones with front-facing cameras might be all the rage right now, but Samsung continues to lead the field of cameras with front-facing screens -- it's bringing its total count of DualView cameras to six with the new flagship ST100 (pictured) and ST600. In addition to sharing a new larger 1.8-inch front screen, both cams feature the same 14.2 megapixel sensor with ISO 3200 sensitivity, a 3.5-inch rear display, and a new "jump shot" mode that uses the front screen to cue a group of people to jump and then fires off three quick snaps to capture the action. Adorable, we know. You're also getting 720p video recording, a gesture-driven touchscreen interface, and smart face recognition that can recognize up to six manually chosen people and 14 automatically registered people. The big difference between the two is the lens -- the $329 ST600 sports a protruding 5x wide angle optical zoom lens, while the $349 ST100 slims things down with a new 5x internal optical zoom. No exact word on ship dates yet, but you'll be able to pick both of these up in a variety of metallic colors when they do hit -- joy. PR after the break.

SAMSUNG ADDS VERSATILITY TO DUALVIEW FAMILY WITH TWO NEW MODELS
Never Miss the Perfect Profile Shot with the New Samsung DualView ST600 and ST100
Ridgefield Park, NJ (July 21, 2010) – Samsung Electronics. Co. Ltd, a global leader in digital media and digital convergence technology, today unveiled the latest additions to its DualView camera portfolio, the 14.2 mega-pixel ST600 and ST100. Reinforcing the company's position as a global leader in the digital imaging industry and a driver of innovation, the ST600 and ST100 build off of the success of the TL225 and TL220, offering consumers a stylish design, a full-range of smart and easy-to-use features, and Samsung's revolutionary dual LCD technology.
The new flagship models of the Samsung DualView camera family, the ST600 and ST100 each received an upgrade to their front LCD screens, activated by a simple tap, which now measure 1.8" compared to the 1.5" front LCD screens found on their DualView predecessors. With larger front LCD screens, the ST600 and ST100 make it easier for consumers to properly frame themselves in their photos and videos and be part of the action by stepping out from behind the camera and joining friends and family in front. The Samsung DualView ST600 and ST100 are also available in stylish, mood-inspired colors, including purple (ST600) and pink (ST100), and are encased in a slim and sleek compact frame with a metallic finish to deliver a new sense of fun and modern functionality that will ensure users stand out from the crowd.
"Today's launch is an important landmark for Samsung as it reinforces our position as a leading innovator in the digital camera market," said SJ Park, President of Samsung Digital Imaging Division. "Unlike any other feature found on digital cameras, consumers immediately recognize the value of what our dual LCD technology can do for them. There is no learning curve or technical understanding that must be achieved as it is a natural extension of what our customers are already doing. Samsung is looking to simplify that task with the new ST600 and ST100, ensuring they have the ability to take the perfect profile shot, and never have to miss that perfect picture moment with family and friends, even if they're not behind the camera."
High-Quality Optics and Images
The Samsung DualView ST600 and ST100 come equipped with high-quality Schneider KREUZNACH lenses which are supported by Optical and Digital Image Stabilization to help consumers produce blur-free images. The ST600 combines a powerful 27mm wide-angle focal length with a 5x optical zoom, while the ST100 is the first Samsung DualView digital camera to feature an internal, 5x optical zoom, which keeps the design optimally chic (35mm focal-length).
Innovative and Easy-to-Use Functions
The new ST600 and ST100 feature Samsung's Smart Auto (Still & Movie) scene recognition technology. With Smart Auto (Still & Movie) selected, the ST600 and ST100 take the guess work out of taking a great photo or video. Smart Auto (Still & Movie) analyzes key elements of the composition of the image such as color, brightness, motion and subject and then selects the appropriate scene mode which will produce the best results.
Additional features offered by the cameras' front LCD screens include a self-portrait mode, a couples mode which will automatically snap a photo when it detects two faces tilted toward each other, a children's setting which will play a cartoon animation with sound to encourage young ones to smile for the camera, and a self-timer which provides a visual countdown so that everyone posing for a photo knows exactly when to smile. The newest feature incorporated into the front LCD screen is Samsung's jump shot mode. When set to jump shot mode, the front LCD will provide a visual queue to those in front of the camera to jump in unison, and immediately trigger the ST600 or ST100 to take three consecutive images to help users capture an image that essentially freezes their subjects in mid-air.
The ST600 and ST100 also incorporate Samsung's Smart Gesture User Interface (UI) which allows for the quick access and use of key features with either a simple tilt or a hand gesture. Users can quickly scroll through photos by slightly tilting the device in either direction, swiping their finger across the screen, or by selecting the appropriate photos for a slide show. Managing images is also easy with the ST600 and ST100.

Perfect for the teeeeeeny boppers.
Im a sucker for all things Samsung (TV's, Appliances, everything!), but their cameras left me wishing for more last time i tried one (3+ yrs ago), i got sick of it and sold it, I still wonder if they got any better with regards to picture quality and battery life.
They're very attractive. The camera isn't bad either; I suppose.

What do these people think they're going to be doing with ISO 3200? My dSLR doesnt even look that great at that speed, I cant even imagine what a point-and-shoot looks like.
@dotCARBON Hey you know how it is...people love big numbers. They think their 8megapixel cell phone is just as good as a point and shoot or a dslr. What your lens F stop is 2.8....mine goes up to 3.5. Yeah!
People will still be taking pictures with their flashes on in front of mirrors.
with there phones did this wish dual cams
Wish their phones did this with dual cams.
Looks shopped.
@Strand0410
really?
@infamous1
Exactly what I was thinking. Didn't they learn anything from BP?
Come on now...is that really necessary. I mean wouldn't a mirror there cost much less and do the same thing. Or does this camera got built in skype.
What's up with the multitudes wishing and withing...
"... smart face recognition that can recognize up to six manually chosen people and 14 automatically registered people"
Am I the only one that doesn't understand what this means?
@franktronic It means if you take a pic and register the face, it will detect that person in future picture with that person and give it focus priority. Manual ones are same but you don't register it.
Good to see that the artificial video limit has now been extended to 20 minutes from the 10 here in the UK :(
Shame that there's a limit in the first place.

I just HATE everything Samsung! They may make one decent product for every 20 shitty ones, but I still don't like Samsung. They just always seem "cheap" to me. Not to mention they are into making everything (kind of annoying). Anyway, I'm sure some will agree with me and most will not, but this is just my opinion/take on Samsung. Everyone likes what they like & buys what they want.
Wish their homes did this in rural lands
Looks like Samsung is finally getting rid of their terrible low end Samsung lenses and sticking with Schneider.
The current front facing LCD cameras are kind of meh... Don't like the PL100 with the Samsung lens.
If this is a sign of things to come for Samsung it looks promising.
Wish their turds did this in dual flush
Wish their pwns did this with dual B&s.
Why why WHY WHY
....
can we not just make articulating lcd's a standard feature again on cameras???
My old Canon A610 has it from 2005. Since then fewer and fewer cameras seems to have this feature. Some cameras do (new Samsung tl-500, canon g11), but some cameras id really like this feature to be on would be the panansonic lx5, canon s90, panasonic gf-1...)
I don't think people understand until you have one, how much more candid, secret shots you can take when you are looking completely away from someone and still take a great shot. Its also great for getting perspective by raising you camera in large crowds. And yes it does the 'facebook profile' picture just as well :P
Panasonic lx5 or gf-1 + articulating lcd = drool
@ChoppedBroccoli
Also I realize that articulating lcds adds bulk and reduces screen size, but there has got to be ways of improving on the hinge/bulk from my 2005 a610 that would suffice for todays cameras.
And while the flip back helps a little, it amounts to a bunch of mirrors and doesn't cover all the kewl angles an articulating lcd can.

No Wifi ?. No Interest :) ST5500 FTW :P
@SpeedyJDK
but there's always eye-fi! get with the times homes
@Streetfights That only works if you got an SD Slot :P So, no thanx. Eye-Fi is crap.
