Droid X users gobbling up 5x the data of other Verizon smartphones
Been wondering why Verizon would seek to curb its unlimited data plans with bogus restrictions? Wonder no more. Jennifer Byrne, a business development executive director at Big Red, has shared with us the shocking stat that early data usage from Droid X owners is five times what other smartphones are suckling down. Clearly, the jumbo screen is being used to the fullest by those lucky enough to get an X when they wanted one, and Verizon is (outwardly, at least) really, really excited to see such keen use of its network. Enjoy it while it lasts, Droidsters!

I have been reaching 2 gigs month with my evo.and once froyo with flash is avail I see that doubling. And when 4g is live in all of NY that number will double again.
I will stick to my practice of connecting to my company's wifi at work and my wifi at home.
So, in short, this phone is the new iPhone for Verizon in terms of data usage?
Its only been out a week right? How can they tell in that short of time the data use trend. Of course they're using more data, they've got a freakin new phone to play with. It'll settle down to normal or slightly above in a few more weeks. Ah the PR teams.
Hahahahaha what was it? Verizon can handle an iphone?
Please. If the droid x is doing this JUST imagine the iphone?
I honestly dont know why people keep on yapping about the iphone on verizon.
They are expensive and more draconian than ATT.
But go ahead keep asking for the iphone. Dont be surprised when they charge you 80 bucks for 5gb's of data known as the "Advanced iphone plan"
@FrankDTank Frank Da Tank you are an idiot.. This phone will run circles around any iPhone. And there is no complaints of phone outage, just data consumption. ATT had their thumb in their ass, thats why my 3GS never did its job. Thank You Moto for the iPhone killer!!
@FrankDTank That's the first intelligent thing I've heard from you all year. A+
Keep the iPhone off our network , we like it for ourselves.
They can keep crappy GSM-based ATT.
Let's assume that V adds a couple hundred thousand of these to it's network over the next six months. And then as rumor suggests, V gets the iPhone in early 2011 and three million of those are added in a few weeks. Suddenly, ATT's network is going to look like SpeedRacer and V's will look like Drving Miss Daisy in speed and access.
Even Walt Goatbeard said it has FANTASTIC battery life.
Keep the MOTO developed power settings/software and you are good to go.
Any smartphone can be made to have poor battery life if you set things wrong.
MOTO did a great job...the few niggles people complained about will be fixed in software/Froyo , then it will be an A+
The person holding it has a small hand.
It is more narrow than the EVO , and thinner !
Most of the size is in the length , cause it`s 16x9 ratio screen for media.
Fits a pocket easily. Unless you are a midget in skinny-jeans.
"Gobble,gobble,gobble" big phone goes.
where is the chart that shows the data? i think my touchpro2 was a data hog too. but i dont think i ever hit 2gbs with hit. however im curious about my Evo. it does seem slightly more data intensive. but 5 times more?
at 5 times more. a lot of verizon users would be hitting that insanely low 2gb limit fast. and the 200mb limit is just a joke.
Um, how huge exactly is this monster? O.o
It goes to prove that Verizon's service would have sucked too if it had millions of iPhones slamming it.
Oh yea??! Get a load of MY phone....

I have the X and I'm using the crap out of it
@4or2wheels It`s fun I bet. Good choice.
@4or2wheels
I cant put this thing down lol
Holy crap! Is that how big it really is? It looks like a Zack Morris phone.
I'd like to see a 4G network that guarantees 512kbps up/down, unlimited monthly transfer.
Verizon, as well as every other mobile service provider should stop overselling their bandwidth.
This is like the internet-speed version of digital camera's mega-pixel wars. Bigger and faster is not always better.
So, we've got this phone, which can browse the "full" web, including Adobe Flash. It is critically connected to the internet by virtue of the fact that it runs Android, so a lot of the data you interact with is stored in the Google "cloud". Plus, it's got a big-ass screen which tempts you to do more on it.
Is 5x the data usage a surprise to anyone?
Honestly, I don't know enough about the robustness of GSM and CDMA networks, but it feels like Verizon *may* be raking it's customers here with high costs for limited monthly data-transfer on top of additional tethering charges, text messaging fees, Vcast, etc.
Just called verizon and the data plan change is not true spoke with one of the supervisors. An those who have been with with them for several years have data plans and other things grandfathered !!! no worries for me !!! :)
ok, didnt this phone just come out? they are coming up with this conclusion with just a few days of data which is silly. i think it's simply a signal that there capped data plans are coming soon.
@uberbadgadget yes it did and the numbers are bull. Of course they're using it it is new. I'm sooo glad I only have Verizon for a work phone (company pays Bill) whew!!! and I dropped my iPhone so I don't have At&t anymore. Thank god for the EVO and Sprint pricing. 4 lines unlimited everything $169 and I travel the country with great coverage. No phone is worth the plan prices of Verizon & AT&T.
that pic reminds me of the Seinfeld episode about the girl with the huge nose...
The solution isn't to CUT data plans. These companies advertise these phones as super phones and then get shocked when customers USE them as INTENDED! How about INCREASING the data allowance and charging a reasonable fee for the Increase?????
Just wait until the iPhone hits too.
Verizon is going to have all the same issues as AT&T. They don't have a better image because they've actually done a better job in handling the same amount of usage. They have a better image because they haven't had the hottest phone for years. Once they have both good Droid and iPhones on their network, their going to take a major hit on their image as well.
Me and both my parents have the X. They're in their 50s, I'm 19.the phone is not nearly as big as it looks. My mother, who is 5'5'' has no problems with the size. It really is an amazing phone. We just switched to Verizon and the service is great. I have had some odd isdues with thecoverage randomly dropping off to calls only but otherwise its been much better than ATT. This is my first real smartphone (I had a BB)and I couldn't be happier. This phone is awesome. My coworker has the iPhone 4 and tries not to look at the X because he admits its a better phone(and he iis a HUGE Apple fanboy.) Phone isn't too big in my opinion; just about right size. Vid capture on it is amazing. About the data, I've had mine since Friday and have used .3 GB. My mom depended about 70 apps bc she thought "that's what you're supposed to do". So the data rates will go down. Especially for ppl like my parents who habe never had a data intensive phone before. Typed with Swype™. On my Droid X.

Gosh!! The Droid X is HUGE! Try getting that out of your pocket in a hurry. Jobs might have a point about “Hummer Phones”. Yes, the hand in the pictures appears to be one of a female. Most women would have to carry a trash bag to fit their makeup and tons of other crap + plus this humongous phone in their purse.
Marketing wise, phones this size will be a huge turn off people with small hands, skinny jeans wearers, and gadget small and unnoticeable phone lovers. Droid will never beat Apple with manufacturers building hardware like this. They just cut off half of potential buyers.
I love gadgets, but it would feel uncomfortable having to always carry a phone like this in your hand or getting it in/out of relaxed jeans or business attire, or it rubbing against your leg. People get a laptop or iPad or TV if you want screens this size.
holy crap that thing is huge (twss) .. hey is that a droid x in your pocket or are you john holmes? wtf .. sorry that is a REALLY BIG "Phone"
iPhone owns. Android sucks.
EVO users take note! I'd much rather pay an xtra 10 bucks a month for unlimited than to get shafted by the carrier with a capped plan.
lol that thing is gigantic.
This story smells like a Verizon leak. Verizon wants everyone to now how much need there is for a over priced tiered dataplan. Yes they do love people using their network!
That has to be a lady holding it. Mines doesnt look like that in my hand and isnt if funny that people are complaining about its too big when not even a year ago everyone was complaining about how small the phones were.
In an age where everything is becoming smaller.....Cell phones are getting bigger??
5x data usage is because the wifi doesn't generally work (yet).
I've said it before and I'll say it again: the issue here is that people are using their smartphone's 3G for *everything*. Nobody is gonna bother to search for a local Wi-Fi network or go find a desktop or laptop when they have an unlimited data plan. Even if you just put in a minor restriction, like 10GB max (but not some bullshit 2GB crap), then it'll curb nonsensical usage soooo much.
Every time I see the Android OS on a smartphone, I instantly cringe at how fuck-ugly it is compared to everything else. Please, google, please make Android's boring, blocky, windows 95-esque icons less ugly!
WTF Verizon? Are we not loyal enough? I've been a customer for 8 years, and you go and fuck it up with this? geez....
Why would you go to a tier system? You'll alienate the core users of your best phones in the lineup. Instead of saying "$30 for Unlimited Data or $15 for 200mb & $30 for 2gb" Just charge a flat-rate "$30 Data Access Fee", you won't lose money by charging less, and you won't lose customers by limiting data usage.....
My supervisor has an x lmao the guy has to be like 5'3 or less..the belt clip looks ridiculous on him. Guess dx is for guys who can't please the wife. It's not the size mate its how you use it;)
END of the day its not the data thats the biggest complaint with ATT.. SAVE THAT BS.. They are able to surf and talk, their voice is the issue, they cant handle their subscriber base on voice consumption and coverage, the data thats a whole different beast. Verizon has a bigger base, and they have done better upgrading towers and so on.. I think big red will do just fine if the iPhone came over.. just my $0.02
That is one HUGE ass phone!
Is that an unusually small hand, or is the phone really that big?
It just came out so of course customers are going to be using more data as they try out the various apps, play with their phone constantly, and get acclimated to their new purchase. This will likely even out to the level of the other Verizon smartphones. I don't see why it wouldn't.
I agree
Even Walt Mossberg said it gets fantastic battery life and he really likes it.
Moto has done some power conservation optimizations of their own , apparently.
I bet Apple hated to hear that !
I have a Captivate as well, and with all the cool stuff associated with this phone and the Droid X, and others, if will be real easy to go through your data usage if your not careful. For me I use wifi all the time with my phone at home, and look for free hotspots (library, coffee shop, etc). I use these spots to download apps, stream pandora, etc. When I use my 3g data at work I mainly just search websites, and may stream music and video on certain occasions. I tend to download my movies and music on my pc and just sync them to my phone anyways, usually better quality anyways.
