HP's Jon Rubinstein -- formerly of Palm CEO fame, of course -- just mentioned in an interview with
Fortune that
webOS 2.0 is on track for "later this year." Considering that 2010 is more than half over, that doesn't leave a whole heck of a lot of time -- but with a mix of presumed kick-ass HP hardware in the pipeline running webOS, we imagine this should all dovetail nicely. On a related note, Rubinstein again drove home the point that they're developing new hardware "aggressively," so let's hope we finally see a Pre 2, a
Palmpad, or heck, a frickin'
LifeDrive 2 in the next few months.
Finally! This better be good or they might be toast, again...
I thought next year was going to be Android vs. WP7 vs. iOS4
But it appears...
A NEW CHALLENGER HAS ENTERED THE RING
@BlackedOut
Later this year could mean he's got 12 months....
@boom roasted CANT WAIT TO BREAK FREE OD GOOGLE and APPLE. it will be so nice to have a reasonable alternative.
@BlackedOut
haha true...its like street fighter. Damn i just switched to droid....good thing i still have my pre on hand. webOS does put to shame the other oses.
@BlackedOut
You forgot OS 6.
@boom roasted
I think HP has a good shot here.
@BlackedOut
I do hope HP puts its muscle behind this chalenger
WebOS seems to be a good OS, but to go up against Apple Microsoft and Google ( and their hardware partners) HP better be serious about it, 1-2 phones and a tablet are not going to cut it, they better be willing to release a full range of WebOS products.
@Canucker
Not if he's using the Gregorian calendar. Then he's only got a little under 6 months.
@ChrisSsk Don't forget printers. /sarcasm
HP has the muscle to do WebOS justice. With MeeGo and WP7 coming, the marketplace will be very competitive.
@Canucker
Maybe in Canada?
@BlackedOut
or... an old challenger has re-entered the ring... again
@JoeDavidBobJr OS 6 deez nuts.
@boom roasted
They kept Rubenstein???
...facePALM
@ChrisSsk Alternatively, they could pull an Apple - have a single, very focussed phone and throw all their weight behind it. It'll be, like, the only modern smartphone using WebOS, so they could probably get away with it if they had stellar hardware to go with it.
But yeah, a range of phones would be nice as well.
@Canucker
Dude, from one Canadian to another...
Your English sucks.
The quote means before Dec 31 2010, and almost certainly in time for the Xmas Shopping season, closer to October/November.
Now change your damn screen name, before you embarrass us any more.
@boom roasted
We had a palm training recently and trainer said this update is huge and adds a lot of features but a virtual keyboard (from the os itself) wont be one of them..she also tried to tell me that small screens and current form factors were the best things in the world, and that no one needs virtual keyboards...
The G1 sold many times the number of devices AFTER it had a virtual keyboard.....just sayin
@kchase731 Not mention one with upgradeable storage and flash. And one with wireless that actually works. Don't you think its kind of funny that the Ipad had problems with the wireless and now they have problems with the Signal on the Iphone4.
I don't want webOS 2.0 this fookin year. I want it by september....
fookin prawns. But really gota love webOS
palm + hp FTMFW
if they had released new phones they would have had me as as customer, but their hardware is aging fast.
@centeredtype Yeah, it's funny...the OS isn't the problem. Release new hardware now instead of waiting for new software later. No one asked for that.
they need to show us something fast, otherwise later this year WP7 will be too big of a hurricane for Palm & HP to make a splash.
If they still be around "later this year"
@Gayguywhohappenstolikegadgets
Yes, like HP is on the rocks....
@Gayguywhohappenstolikegadgets Wha???
@N900
That's my phrase. >.>
@Gayguywhohappenstolikegadgets
Like HP's only got billions of dollars of cash in the coffers and billions more in cash coming in every year. They're doomed!
@Professor Hubert J Farnsworth Your phrase is more like hwha?!
@Gayguywhohappenstolikegadgets heyyy do u have facebook? :)
Please give me a WebOS 2.0 phone! (For AT&T if you can.)
NICE!!!!!!
Attention Apple. Hp is coming.....
@Elton007 I don't think Apple is very scared.
@Elton007
HP has been around for over 40 years. So what's your point?
What does Apple have to worry about?
@Gayguywhohappenstolikegadgets
most engineer in webos are former apple engineers. Ruby knows the recipe and also has somewhat of the steve mentality to a certain extent. You would need to brush up on your Apple history to see what i mean.
@Elton007 Palm's got a good thing........that HP will not develop. Apple has nothing to worry about. HP is too dependent on other companies OS, in other words, they don't have the balls to step into the ring.
Just because I squealed when I read the headline does not make me a girl.
But if it does, then I'm a girl who is really excited for webOS 2.0!
Yawn.
@winbsodos
You sir, are an idiot.
"HP's Rubinstein"
Something sounds weird about that.
@Zalgo for what is worth, before he worked at NeXT and then at Apple, he worked at HP :), so he has returned home.
@Zalgo
want some hp sauce on your rubinstein?
Fuck yeah, I can't wait to get my hands on a webOs2.0 printer!
@PrepaidAndroidUSA I was asking myself just now why they didn't mention the Palm Print. :/
I am probably going wp7 this fall but if webOS 2.0 really blows me away I might keep my pre or upgrade to a new phone.
@jagowar
Why would you go from an OS from last year that is still more advanced than a new OS this year?
@Canucker because in many ways it will be far more advanced that webos and maybe webos 2.0. I constantly would use things like the zunepass and xbox live which really don't exist on webos. Then you also have better email support, native office, synergy 2.0, etc.
PalmPre 2 with IPS\SAMOLED Screen + HDMI output PLEASE!!!
And put an SD slot on it this time! I'll buy it in a heartbeat.
