One sorry mess after another, at this point. As alluded to by another commentator - screw those who've already returned their black iPhones in anticipation of the release of the white model.
I'm not really convinced this is such a "shame," at least from Apple's view. In fact, I think they're happy there are more delays, because it only increases people's appetites, and increases the chance they'll buy a white one when it comes out, even though they have a black one now.
If they released them at the same time or close to each other, people would have waited. But I'd be willing to bet there are people who bought the black one now and will buy the white one when it comes out later.
Summary: Apple's large delay in the white iPhone 4 will allow them to release as a "new" product, rather than a simple variation on an existing product.
@Nonok This is smart though. Completely outsell every defected black one, and fix the white one. Maybe once they realized the problem, they made only a very, very limited quantity of the white model in order to do this. I just wish I had waited (if that's their plan).

@fais I was going to say it. Maybe tetrafobia thoughts got to it... I think it would possibly hurt it's sales in asia. Nokia almost never used 4 on their model numbers because of this.

One assembly plant is up and running to make the black ones, and with the demand that there is, there is no way Apple is going to switch up just to make a niche-color phone.
There is absolutely zero chance that Apple did not know about this last week during the press conference. You don't just magically go from a couple of weeks to "later this year" in 7 days.
I have some family in China. The word there is that they are having trouble getting to optomal density of the white compound to put on the glass.
On a related note, they are saying that they have changed the density of paint they are using on the black models, and that has helped the antenna problems.

White is particularly difficult as it tends to stain to a beige.

Apple already sold millions of the black version, release the white version after "telling" customers that the iPhone has an antenna problem and give free bumper won't increase that much the number of units sold. Besides WP7, android 3.0 and Web OS 2.0 will Come out later this year; perfect time to upgrade the ipad with iOS 4.1.2 and release an iPhone 4 with a redesigned antenna along with the white version; this way Apple iPhone can get some attention later this year too. If WP7, android 3.0, web OS 2.0 devices are not better than the iPhone 4 (high res display, form factor, video call etc…) iPhone will "keep the crown" otherwise we'll have a new king. Hope palm pre 2'll be the new king, until then the Nokia N8 will replace my 3GS.
