Apple starts refunding Bumper purchases automagically
Automatic refunds, or so the email says. We've been on the receiving end of a deluge of tips this morning pointing out that Apple has begun funneling cash back into its users' pockets -- a most unusual event, to be sure -- to live up to its retroactive promise of free Bumpers for all (who buy their iPhone 4 before September 30). If the particular wording is to be trusted, that should mean that even those who haven't yet bothered to put in a claim, but did purchase a Bumper, will find themselves enriched in due course. Apple estimates this bandaid solution to its antenna problems will cost $175 million in real cash money, but we suspect the biggest price to pay will be in the form of pride and reputation.

@ghettocowboy may i ask why are you on here then?
@alonsop anyone can post wherever they want to post...sheesh...why do people keep saying that? Androiders to Applers/Applers to Androiders etc etc etc...we do it because we can, etc...stupid question.
@AbsoluteDesignz exactly its a choice, then why not make the reasonable choice and go somewhere else, it's like saying f my dad but your on his testicals
if you don't like what engadget had to offers to its viewers go to apple.com
@alonsop
I don't think it's possible for that to make any less sense.
And yet 99% of all Apple zealots will still deny anything wrong.
@liquidkernel
And 99% of non-iPhone users still suffer from iPhone's antenna reception.
lmao at every single idiot who bought the iphone. what a horribly designed pos. and no, the phones that apple posted on their site dont have the "same problem", theres a big difference between antenna detuning and attenuation
@liquidkernel
That's default response of fanboys.
BTW does this mean they will start bundling this with new stocks in countries which are set to receive iPhone 4 on 30th ?
I received my refund email an hour ago, so All is Good.
PLUS reception on my 32GB iPhone 4 has always been great. Had the bumper on there from day one, so this is all gravy, baby.
@liquidkernel You're dumb.
@liquidkernel
I love to dig on Apple as much as anyone but this is a great move on their part. Major props for stepping up and doing the right thing.
Financially this is a drop in the bucket. If they only would have handled the PR better (like admitting the mistake early on) then they would have come out of this smelling like roses.
Still, you have to give them credit for making things right.
Guess some people are more empathetic than we previously thought...
If your toaster doesn't work as advertised, I should be pissed, although my pop tarts will never feel the pain...
@Vuke
thats make no sense. go away
@bjsguess
they havent made anything right, theyre still selling a defective phone that requires a rubber case to make phone calls
consumer reports still isnt recommending the iphone, and rightly so.
@MicrosoftOwns D*amn Apple its like that?!?!?
@trollOS
"There is nothing wrong"
sarcasm usually doesn't work on the internet unless it's clever yet simple.
Pretty costly fix to a non-issue because, "the iPhone 4 is the best smartphone on the market right now."
@liquidkernel
As much as you guys hate how much attention the iPhone is getting despite the antenna problem, it's funny how quick you guys are to comment.
It has an antenna problem- Then don't get it, don't talk about it, let it go and go play with whatever device you like.
As For me, I'm going to keep it and love it. Why? Because it does everything that I need well.
@bjsguess it took a boatload of press for them to do it, so its like a forced apology
@liquidkernel
These aren't the droids you're looking for.
You can go about your business.
Move along.
@MicrosoftOwns
Who gives a sheet about CR
@mandroid
Did they ever confirm that there was a problem? I thought they just blamed other phones, saying "they had the problem first!"
I'm sure that is the kind of tack we used to take in Nursery/Pre-School?
O well. I'm still hoping Android takes the market share eventually.
I like the IPhone, but hate Apple. they just don't really care about the customer, they only care about being in control!
D
@dgoulston
android isnt taking anything. windows phone 7 will take what android ever had.
@trollOS $30 x roughly 3 million iPhone 4s bought = $120 million......?
@liquidkernel
nothing is wrong
@MicrosoftOwns
Windows phone 7 is over hyped. most people in the tech world are not expecting much from it.
from a developers point of view:
It does not support Socket's and the Email Push does not work to start with... fail.
but only time will tell.

Sorry, can't resist.
@bjsguess Since when did 'the right thing' equate to lying to customers, obfuscating the issue and refusing the recall that is needed to solve the actual problem?
@liquidkernel
I work at a plastic molding and extrusion company and I can assure you it wouldn't take no more than 500 bucks worth of plastic to cover this
@dgoulston
most people in the tech world also think everyone uses firefox and chrome, and IE sucks (not true)
and also think android is great and has high marketshare (has virtually no marketshare.)
@MicrosoftOwns Generally people in the 'tech world' think IE6 sucks, newer versions have seen improvements but IE6 is the scourge of the internet.
@Vuke Lol so true. Fandroids are going crazy cause their iPhones don't work.
If you don't own an iPhone and are still talking about iPhone antennagate 3-4 weeks after the fact you need a job
@fpad77
@MicrosoftOwns
Even Microsoft admit IE6 sucks... and advise people not to use it. because of security floors.
but most companies that have software dispatch systems still use IE6. I use chrome my self, and its soo nice and simple, without all the overhead.
That is the only problem I find with MS products, they are full of overheads.
I have no problem with Microsoft gaining hold on the market, hopefully side by side Microsoft & Android will squish Apple into an unhealthy GM fruit juice.. lol.
@Vuke
Guess I'm in that lonely 1% - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=US0bd6ZNUP0&sns=em
@dgoulston If fantards on the Internet actually paid attention, Steve said very clearly during the press conference:
"We knew that if you gripped it in a certain way, the bars are going to go down a little bit, just like every smartphone. We didn’t think it’d be a big problem, because every smartphone has this issue."
He also made a huge joke about that gap between the antennas being like "X marks the spot".
It sucks that Apple haters are posting on these articles all the time, because it makes it hard to get a read of how widespread the issue really is.
@trollOS If you find another company that will refund you your money without making you jump through their call system in India or sending in some UPC code from your box let me know.
@dgoulston
Free bumpers and excellent customer service rating, yeah they really don't care bout their customers.
Please do your research before making such a crazy statement.
@Vuke what, are you really this stupid? I was never able to reproduce the drop bars unless I deliberately tried to do it in an area with a poor signal. It can't be replicated with a bumper. You're just an angry hater! Go back to your hole, troll!
@Vuke Apple just spent 175 million dollars to fix something that wasn't wrong? Of course there is something wrong. Your only getting a case because the case makes the phone part of the phone work as it was intended.
Where's my email? #^*%€£¥€%
@rhimbu
Still not here.
momcorp: "We will refund bumpers because we love our dearies!" dumb bastards!
@Element115
The fact that they are coming out and refunding the money without the buyer having to interact is a new thing to most consumers. I'm no Apple fanboy, and I hate the fact that Apple still doesn't consider itself at fault, but the way this was handled is amazing. Since when does a company purposefully lose money to make you happy?
@Teerim
Are you kidding me? Obviously you never owned a car! There are tons of other kind of recalls/service call ins going on.
And I'm not criticizing that they give out bumper. I just found the way how Jobs told people how much he loves his costumers mesmerizing similar to the way Mom talks in Futurama.
@Teerim
"Since when does a company purposefully lose money to make you happy?"
ever since a company started selling a defective product that required a case to make a call.
@Teerim
no its not a new thing, you must be a teen who obviously is new to credit
@Teerim ... what are you on about...it's like they invented giving money back through a card number? lmao
Their precious industrial design, shat upon by a big rubber band.
The bumper is a lie
Meh, I hope more users take that vinyl bandage route instead.
