Acer debuts S201HL, S211HL and S231HL LCD monitors
Tired of smacking your LCD around just to get the backlight to function for a few minutes? Acer feels your pain, and it's offering up a new trio of monitors here in the US for those suffering the ancient panel blues. The new S1 series checks in between 13mm and 15mm thick, and the company is making 'em available in 20-, 21.5- and 23-inch sizes. As you'd expect, the whole lot offers white LED backlighting, an Energy Star 5.0 sticker, 12,000,000:1 (dynamic) contrast ratio, 5ms response time, 250 nits of brightness and 16.7m colors. The bigger two offer a native 1,920 x 1,080 resolution (while we're left to wonder on the little guy), with connections including VGA, DVI and HDMI (23-inch only). They'll be splashing down soon on US shelves for $169.99 (S201HL), $219.99 (S211HL) and $269.99 (S231HL).
Acer Launches New S1 Line of Ultra-Thin, Space-Saving Displays With Advanced Eco-Friendly Technology and Packaging
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Acer America today debuts a new line of ultra-thin LED monitors that feature an eco-friendly, space-conscious design. The new S1 series displays combine the latest LED technology with a slim 13mm to 15mm profile, making them ideal for users with limited space for work or entertainment.
"Another key consideration was designing a monitor that delivers low energy consumption and environmental impact."
The S1 series LED monitors come in a range of sizes, delivering excellent video performance and innovative display technologies to deliver crisp, clear images.
"In addition to the eye-catching design and crisp visual quality, the S1 series monitors were designed to be one of the slimmest monitors available today for consumers with a limited amount of desk space," said Irene Chan, senior product marketing manager for peripherals, Acer America. "Another key consideration was designing a monitor that delivers low energy consumption and environmental impact."
Designed with clean lines, a polished black display frame and rounded porcelain-like stand, the eye-catching S1 series is the perfect blend of sophistication and style. These modern looking displays are available in three sizes – 23-inch, 21.5-inch, 20-inch – and feature an ultra-slim profile, ranging from only 13 mm for the 20-inch to less than 15mm for the 21.5-inch and 23-inch models.
The S1 series of monitors leverages some key eco-friendly, energy-saving technologies. All of the S1 models feature white LED backlighting, which does not contain hazardous substances such as mercury or halogen gases, making it safer for the environment. Additionally, white LED technology consumes less power, providing up to 68% power savings to users.(2)
All of the new displays are RoHS and ENERGY STAR® 5.0 compliant, the latest and most widely used energy-conservation qualification, helping consumers streamline costs and preserve power while providing higher efficiency. To further decrease the environmental impact of the displays, the Energy Star 5.0 specifications incorporates stringent energy consumption and power management requirements while in the "On" mode.
For consumers with community recycling programs, the environmentally-friendly monitors all come in highly recyclable packaging materials, with all major plastic components properly labeled with the composition code and recycling symbols to facilitate future recycling based on ISO 1043/11469 standards.
Cutting-Edge Features Offer Excellent Picture Quality
The sophisticated new Acer S1 series of LED monitors provides consumers with a premium viewing experience and advanced features. The monitors all feature 12,000,000:1 contrast ratio via Acer Adaptive Contrast Management (ACM), for crisp graphics and stunning picture quality. The ACM features advanced technology that enables users to adjust images frame by frame for a dramatic improvement of gradation and detail, especially in very dim or very bright scenes.
Providing excellent high-definition picture quality, all of the monitors boast a 16:9 aspect ratio, allowing users to view high-definition digital content without the image distortion that arises from incompatible aspect ratios. The 21.5-inch and 23-inch display models all feature 1920x1080 resolutions, further enhancing the video quality.
Perfect for viewing high-definition videos, movies and other digital content, all of the S1 series of displays feature rapid 5ms response times, 250 cd/m2 brightness and 16.7M colors.
Each of the new displays ensure easy connectivity to home entertainment devices and office peripherals via a VGA port or DVI port with HDCP protection (depending on the model.) The 23-inch model also comes with an all-digital HDMI interface, delivering exceptional high-definition viewing and top-quality uncompressed video.
Software Solutions Enhance Visual Experience
Acer's unique software solutions boost usability. The eColor Management on-screen interface allows users to tailor the performance of the display, such as brightness, saturation and contrast. The Empowering Key enables users to switch between viewing scenarios and create their own to compensate for application and environmental constraints. The eDisplay Management function is a powerful color enhancement and display rotation tool.
Pricing and Availability
The Acer S1 series of displays will be available this month for U.S. customers at leading retailers for an MSRP of $169.99 for the 20-inch model (S201HL), $219.99 for the 21.5-inch model (S211HL) and $269.99 for the 23-inch model (S231HL).

I want that for my wallpaper.
Minus the 'acer' bit.
@archkron: You could always Photoshop that part out. And its even to do now in CS5 with Content-Aware Fill
@archkron
Why aren't these companies focusing on larger sizes?? I am dying for some competition to Dell's 27 inch monitor...
@eli I'm only straying from Dell's 27 because I don't have the money for it and at most I only want 1920x1080. I'm not sure how well my games would run on 2560x1600. They play great on 1080, but 1600 seems too much, and I'm not sure if Blu-Ray would be okay for 1600. Doesn't the quality top out at 1080, therefore 1600p would make them, dare I say, fuzzy or blurry?
@Jake Root No idea on blu ray, but playing MW2 at full res on my 27" iMac is GLORIOUS. I currently team my iMac with a 27" Samsung tv/monitor running at 1080 and the mis-matched resolutions is annoying. I figure I will hold out for this supposedly upcoming apple display, I assume it will be sub-$1k only because if it isn't then there is little-to-no reason to avoid spending a couple hundred more and getting a 27" iMac as your 2nd monitor... imagine that!
I like em. Better than the current acer monitors out there.
Way too low of a resolution for such a large screen.
@Hazdaz
If it was 1920*1200 it'd be godly... As far as I'm concerned, the higher the resolution the more power I need to drive it. My 4770 wouldn't survive.
@archkron Yeah, it's a pity that a movie format dictates screen resolution, those extra 120pixels do make a difference!
1920 x 1080 makes me sad.
I still can't believe that Acer monitors, and Acer laptops are made by the same company.
It doesn't matter how much they improve the backlight, they still use horrible TN panels. No thanks Acer,
Meh.
I want 27" adn 30" monitors, with more resolution than 1080p. and priced under a grand.
@tad604
That was possible until 2009. From now on, forget it.
I own an Acer H233H display, and love it. 23", 1080p, 40k:1 contrast, with HDMI and built-in speakers that aren't half bad.
Whenever some friends and I get stupid and decide to meet at someone's house to do some 360 gaming, I'll take it with me. Works great.
@ModernTenshi04 I have the same monitor and absolutely love it. Movies and games look amazing on it and the overall quality is excellent. No bad pixels, backlight bleed is minimal and 1080p looks like plenty of resolution to me for a 23" monitor. I'm pretty picky about screen quality on anything, but I am very happy with this monitor.
@ModernTenshi04
1:40000 LOL, this one 1:12.000.000: ROFL! This Acer is measured at maximum brightness first, then without powercable in a dark gay cave? What a nonsense. The best contrast in any LCD at the moment is 1:+/-2500 for the Samsung 2380M. That is with PVA, black-king. TN is usually around 1:1000, all the rest is bogus.
I want 23" with 1920 * 1200 resolution
@W1lksen
Get a second hand old Cinema Display. About the only screen ever made with that resolution/size (and some ancient expensive Eizo's, Nec's probably).
Are Acer products generally good?
I've only briefly used an Acer laptop (I couldn't tell you which model, but I'm sure it was fairly recent.), and I wanted to chop off my hands.
@Squalor I have an Acer H233H monitor and my wife has an Acer laptop - based on that experience, their monitors seem to be MUCH higher quality than their laptops. My monitor is excellent quality, while my wife's laptop is falling apart. Check out monitor reviews on NewEgg for more details.
Love the LED backlighting. Would wish for higher res, but monitors with those specs aren't exactly cheap:
http://is.gd/dJRZa
Needs 120hz specs. Since i upgraded my monitor to 120hz, i can never go back to 60hz.
@makotech222 how the hell do u upgrade from a 60hz monitor to a 120hz? or did u just mean that u bought one...
@makotech222
bought, obviously :D
@makotech222 That's why i am waiting :D
I need a good monitor with 120hz, i am sick of my dual 24inches @ 60hz
Dell come on releast a LED back lit monitor with all your connections, SD reader, complex stand..just don't charge an arm and a leg for it please...thanks, Danny
1080p crap must stop!
Really? 1080pp is not enough? Do you think you'll really notice those extra 120 pixels? It's a damn good resolution. I have a 24" monitor that runs at 1080p and it absolutely fine.
@max3000 Trust me I've used both types and you can really tell the difference, 1080 is fine for a TV but as a computer monitor you really do need the extra pixels
@max3000 Yes, the extra 120 pixels are glorious. For general computing 16:10 is a far superior ratio.
"Tired of smacking your LCD around just to get the backlight to function for a few minutes?"
Umm...what?
I hate how 1080P has taken over the large monitor market. I won't buy it unless it's at least 1920 x 1200. It might seem like a small difference, but that's 230,400 extra pixels and it makes a difference.
@OverDriven Amen. Trends are SOOOO good for innovation.
My WS monitor is 1080p so I guess I need to see and 1920 x 1200 to see if I can tell the difference. Either way I just want as 22 or 23 in monitor with as small as a bezel as possible for Eyefinity on 3 monitors. This one looks fairly small so may have to look further into one.
It just makes you wonder will TN EVER die ?? The technology to create cheap IPS panels fast enough for gaming is FINALLY here, and yet 99% of new monitors still come with TN. It is vastly inferior in every where and the viewing angles are laughable. It's 2010 isn't it?
If these are at least as good as my Acer P235H then I highly recommend taking a look at them. My current Acer monitor has one beautiful display. It's hard to imagine something much better.
And still no DisplayPort? That is starting to disappoint me in a time where ATI basically requires you to use it to make full use of their video cards.
@Supacon http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236091
Only 1080 on 27" which is disappointing but at that price and with those connections I'm really tempted. A lot of HP monitors now include display port and HDMI as well.
Is it edge or full LED backlight?
Busy day for acer, eh?
that said, I've pretty much sworn off all acer products. seen too much crap happen to them to take more risks.
besides, I love my excellent Dell 2407wfp, even tho it's a bit old :(
Yawn. When are these idiots going to quit the sheeple thing and give us higher res again? This 1080 crap is pure bullshit for PCs.
Whatever happened to making good quality large resolution non tn based monitors?
Not a fan of the res (nor the acer part) but I lurrrve that bezel!
Is it just me or are the days of 1920x1200 over? I rarely see any screens being sold at that resolution.
