MeeGo becomes infotainment operating system of choice for BMW, GM, Hyundai and more
It's getting to the point where it's not terribly easy to keep track of all the in-car entertainment initiatives our wondrous connected future has in store, but here's two names you'll want to remember: GENIVI and MeeGo. The former is an industry alliance that now includes automakers GM, BMW, Hyundai and Peugeot Citroen alongside the likes of ARM, NVIDIA, Nokia and Intel, and MeeGo is the Linux-based OS that they've just decided will soon be powering our cars. Don't expect this to affect your daily drive anytime soon, but in the long run we wouldn't be surprised to hear that the Moblin-Maemo base underpins future revisions of Terminal Mode and OnStar.

How long before MS tries to extort licensing fees out of all of them with claims of linux infringing its patents?
How long before the US wakes up to the insanity of software patents?
I wonder if it would boot faster in a Toyota.
Hopefully they won't rely on Nokia for bug fixes. 6 months for 1.2? Gimmie a break!
Great, next all the geeks will be talking about how they "rooted" their car or did a "slide load" of Doom onto their cars nav screen.

Good photoshop job in that pic (!)
When is BMW going to go to a blue or green display instead of that amber stuff? Makes their technology look like it is from the 80's. A couple of people I know who recently looked at buying BMW's aske the dealers the same question and they got similar answers - we get a lot of requests about that but BMW wants to stay traditional. I guess we're lucky they took off the crank for the engine.
Please get us the goods on n900's sucessor & pronto.
I'm going into shock, I cant wait any longer!!!!
Great news!
Although this does seem to limit the choice of my next vehicle =)
I hope others will join the alliance too.
what if GENIVI installed MeeGo in all vehicle car / truck. it would put "In-Dash Stereos" out of business..
MeeGo runs in car/tuck-
Music
Movie/Photo
GPS
FM radio
FTW!!
This might be stupid but do you think that the metro interface would look good in a luxury car like this and be easy to navigate with. I think it wold look good.
Hope MeeGo in cars is awesome.
This makes me a lot more likely to buy from Hyundai or even GM over Ford.
I can't just how big of a deal this is. No more iDrive!!!
Big win for MeeGo, hopefully Android gets in this space quick.
Linux in a Car OS going mainstream...one word awesome...
I saw this demo at OSCON. I thought it was extremely rough. I was hoping to seem some cloud in action, but it was really slow and not intuitive like the webOS. I think "we have failed if.." There is a cursor on a phone. Seriously does anyone one enjoy a cursor on their phone. Yes, all the blackberries and android phones with cursors, you missed the boat, too! The guy at the booth lost wifi connection and couldnt open the browser. He didn't have any media to show me either. Seems like vaperware at this point. If its going to be in cars, who knows. Sounds like an ipad dock for the steering wheel. lol
