Apple's 24-inch and 30-inch Cinema Displays on the outs
Now that Apple's unleashing a 27-inch Cinema Display in September, what's to become of its 24-inch and 30-inch bookend brethren? Straight from the mouths of Apple execs and disseminated by way of Macworld's Jason Snell -- a man who would most definitely be in the know -- the dynamic duo is being discontinued. End of the line is when supplies run out, so better place your orders now if you aren't hip to monitors with diagonal lengths divisible by 9.

Both are still too expensive.
@Programmer I still dont know what is SO special about apple products that they cost so much.
@statickeith
I guess it's the Apple logo.
@Programmer Actually I find the Cinema Displays pretty reasonably priced. You also get stuff like Camera, Speakers, Microphone, 3 USB ports, Display and charging cable connected to the display itself. And the Display is LED backlit too all In a nice looking design. And of course it stands well with your current Macbook or Mac pro.
@statickeith
All flaming aside, you have to realize that Apple does a pretty good job about getting the best components into their products, so their often at the high-end where there's few competitors. But for those looking for a good deal I'd suggest a Dell. They also offer some e-IPS and H-IPS displays, I personally have a U2211H which I got for around $260. If you look for some of their older models you can also get a decent deal on a 30" for example, but basically Apple actually is very competitive with their larger displays when it comes to the latest IPS monitors. This is also because of the volume they can sell, where as Dell for example also offers TN displays for much cheaper and very few customers care/know enough to go for an IPS option
@Programmer
The Apple logo on *computers* has become a taboo of sorts, it's almost non-existent.
@Programmer
It's apple baby, you know iPad creators, and iPhone creators that combined sold over 6 million in a matter of about 1 to 2 months.
@Indefinite Implosion
Apple products are reasonably priced for a month or so, then everyone else slashes prices because something new is out and Apple refuses to refresh their product line.
@statickeith its the apple tax, the price of a pc wuth the same specs multiplied by 1.5 to get apple price
@Programmer Ita ok Maybe one day when you become a real programmer you can afford one. Loser!
@Andork
Stay classy buddy, stay classy.
@Programmer does anybody expect a 21.5 " screen anytime soon from cupertino?
This size is big enough to replace a TV for some people and the price is very competitive for a 27" LED-backlit IPS, given that Dell's option is $100 more.
The 16:9 aspect can be annoying for work but it would be nice with a PS3 or XBox input using an adaptor.
@Lucky Businessman
You sound like you know alot bout blowing.
$1800 for 30"? Talk about rip off.
@vpr0
whats $1800?
this new 30" is gonna sell for $999.
@MaX PL It's 27" get it right.
@MaX PL
The old 30", the new one is 27"
When I click the 30" link. $1799
http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9179LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MTA4MzU1OTQ
Old or what, still rip off. even if the new is $999.
hopeful they'll come out with a 32in
@Apple561 If it's a 16:9 ratio, too, then it's a big fat fail, in my book.
Not all of us spend all of our time watching videos...some of us actually, you know, read things and seeing half a page at a time gets kinda old.
@CRA1G
Only seeing half the page?!? You do of course realize that the thing is 27 inches. You are either using hugh fonts or have really big pages...
@CRA1G this matters when the 16:9 display in question is 1080 instead of the proper 1200 (19x12), but seriously, the vertical on this thing is 1440 pixels. how could you possibly only be seeing half a page unless you are setting font at 24 point??
@CRA1G Dumbass maybe it's not for you huh?!!
@CRA1G
turn it sideways
Nice to finally see a new 30 incher out other than the HP one lately as I'm looking to go from my 3.5 year old 24" finally. But for $1800 nope Ill go with a LG for $1100 thanks.
@Soldier1969 And it is possible the main panel was done by LG, so there is really nothing to worry about.
@Soldier1969 It's not 30", the new one is 27".
I don't really care about the 30" but the 24" was my favorite.
I don't really care about the 30" but the 24" was my favorite.
@Unverified User
She said that.
@n8equalsd right before she said, "yeah, i mean, it was big... but he couldn't get it up."
Now shaddap with those dumb jokes!
Apple sucks!;D Fanboys blew it;D
lmfao
Downrank me but it's true
@Lucky Businessman explain?
is it a sin to be sick of utopia?
@caprice But How exactly do you get sick of Utopia? It's like a world full of iPhones... and Apple. :D
@iPodPhone
No Flash in Utopia.
Open source & Flash friendly Android Utopia is one level up. All you need to gain entry to the elevator is to stop idolizing an apple.
I'd love to have one of these for my video editing. Come one Apple, give a hard working student a 75% off discount on one of these bad boys.
Is 24" fully PC compatible? I mean PC with videocard that has display port, like ATI 5770?
Apple shit is always overpriced. You could go with another company and get something better for less. You basically pay for their logo.
@1016JP1
So go somewhere else then. Some people like to pay premiums for logos. Nothing wrong with that at all. We all buy luxury items in our lives. Some can afford lavish homes and supercars, others like to spend on premium gadgets and tech. Don't be jealous, I'm sure your walkman is better than most others your age.
@1016JP1
Well actually...if you read Engadget's post on the 27 display, you will note that they compared it to a similar sized Dell, which was $100 more, and I believe the Dell did not have the USB hub or the Magsafe power connection (but of course, why would they have that). So really, this monitor is not really overpriced.
I really wish they would have updated the 30", adding iSight, keeping the matte finish and DVI, and reduced the price
Monitors, amazing, revolutionary... magical.
I guess for Apple, less is more. Only one monitor offered, one aspect ratio, one finish (glossy) and one connectivity option (mini DisplayPort). I'm good with the fact they opt for IPS all around, but I don't understand why they wouldn't want to give their customers a choice depending on their budget. 21.5", 24" and 27" ACD would all sell, most of us would be glad to have a matching ACD with their MBP and/or Mac Mini.
Apple does absolutely nothing to make me buy my first ACD, I'll stick with my equally expensive NEC, it's not matching the design of my computer but I can choose it's resolution, screen (matte) and connectivity options. Choice, you know, more than 1. ;)
@Bruf
Well .. looking at apple, my guess is that this will really simplify their supply chain ( I guess they have looked at their sales figures and the 27 inches is the highest selling one ). Simplifying their supply chain would actually mean a huge cost savings to them ( not to mention inventory, support and manufacturing costs ) and with them swimming in cash, I guess they can say, we can afford not offering the whole gamut of screen sizes.
For example, look at their computers. The number of models offered ( e.g. the iMacs ) is smaller as compared to Dell for example.
I've had 2 30 inch HD monitors since the day they came out. So that would make them about 4/5 years old and they still blow me away with the clarity of the 2560 X1600 resolution. Great for everything from FCP editing High def to playing WOW.
One size fits all...but only in Steve Jobs' mind.
@BenRoethig That's what your mom said
@BenRoethig That's what your mother said
You guys aee thinking of these monitors as your everyday monitor that you use jut to browse the Internet and watch a couple movies on. Just like the Mac Pro, this isn't for the "typical" user. Hence you have an iMac for your basic computing needs and entertainment. Apple computers aren't used the same as pcs and that's something pc users fail to realize.
Of course you wouldn't spend that much money on a monitor wen you can buy a brand new 52" 1080p HDTV for that price. This isn't your everyday monitor. Apple users wouldn't buy this without it being a necessity.
