Dell Streak retailing for $299 with contract, $549 without; Dell Aero gets launch deets as well
So, Dell still won't say when it will actually start selling and shipping the Streak in the US, but it did clear up a bit of confusion. First off, folks who register with the Streak pre-sale on Dell.com between July 20th and July 27th (yeah, today is the last day) get first access at ordering the phone. Pre-sale-ers will get an email link to buy the phone today, with the handset priced at $299.99 with a two-year AT&T contract, or $549.99 without. Meanwhile, Dell is being even more forthcoming in the Aero. It'll be available on August 9th for $99.99 with a contract and $299.99 without. So, are you ready for Dell to be a US phone manufacturer? Have you braced yourself? Because the time is at hand.
[Thanks, Jas]
Update: It looks like Dell has pulled its blog post we sourced this from. We'll let you know if the facts change, but for now we're gonna stick with these numbers.

Naaa...too big
@mopey
Cue stream of 'That's What She Said" comments in 3...2...1
@DaHarder No portrait, $300, AT&T. 3 strikes you're out
@DaHarder
too expensive but cool
@DaHarder Sign me up...for a Windows 7 version.
I know someone at Dell is reading this, as this is how companies operate. So hey, whatsup, congrats on these US phones. Now make something exactly like it for Windows 7. I'm on Verizon. You'll get all my monies, I promise.
@DaHarder That's what she said.
Looks like the Dell Streak
*sunglasses*
Just got struck
@DaHarder
You can get 8% off of the Streak if you pay for it with paypal via Bing Cash. Not as much as of a discount as the HD2 had, but it is still cash that stays in your pocket.
@walkingdogs
it's $300 because obviously no carrier was interested enough to offer any more than that level of a subsidy
@DaHarder
Why would anyone get this? I personally would not be tolerant of mere WVGA on a large 5" screen. They should have gotten the ppi over 300. Many websites are not very readable at WVGA. If they had 720p or XGA resolution then I would have bought it for double what they are selling it for (rather than not buying it at all).
@JS
"Why would anyone get this?"
Answer: Because They Want It... as simple as that.
@JS
Yeah, I agree there, with these larger >4" screens they are starting to use on cellphones they need to bump them up to a higher res, and I know it's not an availability issue cause i'm on the internet with my Sony UX series UMPC right now which has 1024x600 res on a 4.5" screen which makes internet browsing so much better than 800x480 on the 4.3" screen of my HD2.
And I guess Dell doesn't really want to sell these, that or they didn't get the memo that the $300 on contract smartphones don't fly no more, especially with an outdated OS version. $200 or don't bother, well unless you have say 32gb of memory built in, which it doesn't.
@walkingdogs
I thought I read you can do portrait mode but the Dell skin doesn't apply. That's one thing I'm not liking is the semi- bad reviews of the Dell skin.
@mopey
It's not the size but how you use it...
@DaHarder
The Golden Price Point is $199 Dell..... I don't care who you are, you price yourself above the most popular phones right now and then you neg on the no contract price, $499 was touted a few times. $549 is just BS AT&T pricing.
@mopey Actually, it isn't. I have played with one many times here in the UK, and not only is the size perfect (screen in particular), but it is almost as thin as iPhone 4 and slips into your pocket with ease. Once you play with one, you will never go back to a smaller screen device. Only negative is lack of Mini USB. (With Froyo due out soon, the Android 1.6 negative is now obsolete.)
@DaHarder
I'll wait for the storm series of phones from Dell...
@Plazmic Flame
Who's to say that this won't be US 299.00 with a US 100.00 mail-in rebate, making it a grand total of (wait for it...) US 199.99!
Which is often the case with these handsets. - We'll See...
@DaHarder
You know, I was excited months ago. Then I was annoyed cause we still heard nothing about a release date. Then I applied to Dells marketing team because how could some one not lose their job over Dells TERRIBLE marketing of this phone. Its like they dont want to sell any of them. And finnally, I just gave up and jumped from an iPhone 3g to the Samsung Captivate. I now see Dell is finally giving a price a even the carrier is names, OMG!!! Lol. I got the Captivate for $150, got best buy to price match walmart, so after seeing the $300 sub price for the streak im not fighting between the two now. Dont get me wrong, I think the streak is damn cool, but dell needs to pull their heads out of their arses. Their marketing that is...
@DaHarder Oh! Now the Source link is down. A second snafu it seems.
@Gooch818
Exactly. I've yet to buy a phone because I want to see what WP7 does, and at the very least, I want the Captivate to get a stock Android ROM before I buy. But at this point, I out right REFUSE to buy this. And to make matters worse, the modding community isn't really behind this thing. Its got root days after its release, but there still isn't a custom ROM (beside the MoDaCo ROM).
And seriously, $300 on contract? That's ridiculous.
@BigJayDogg3
They'd better bring the heat with the Smoke/thunder etc.
@DaHarder
Love the product, but not for $550. I'll wait for the price drop.
I could see the Streak being a very good device for some folks. There are cases where a larger screen might be just the ticket in getting the job done. Though, I'd like to see more on the Areo phone, which is more like a real smartphone. $99 is not bad for a high end Android device.
@walkingdogs Exactly. I totally agree on all three. Just the fact that its on AT&T as ruined it
@DaHarder
Same here I've been waiting months 4 this phone, hurry Dell I want it now!!!!!
I don't care it doesn't have Froyo yet, since I can tell this phone will be rooted by people in a week or 2 & then they port the sweet froyo love the N1 has onto this beautiful 5" screen
& FYI to all the haters that think the screen is to big & not pocketable, it's the phone taller & bigger men like me need 4 are giant fingers since I am 6'6" an hate tiny software keyboards on little screens
So Dell definitely has the Tall Men Market Cornered unlike the tiny iPhone, expect many Famous Athletes to make the Dell Streak their own an hopefully main stream
@DaHarder I ended up paying $300 for my G1 because of funky small text in the contract, I wasn't allowed to upgrade so soon, so I had to pay full pop.
Oh well,$300 is fine as long as it does what I want it to do.
@Ducman69 Like how everyone waited for the Kin to drop in price? Wish granted! I predict this Dell phone will be dead in 6 months. Or less. Or not, after all, it's my prediction.
@Dig Deep You can change the home screen to portrait mode by installing the ADW Launcher app from the Android marketplace. This app will allow you to transition between landscape and portrait on the home screens.
My new baby!....great job Dell...5 inch is perfect for me.
@browserspot hahahahahaha
@browserspot That's what she didn't say.
Sorry.
@browserspot
Thats what she never said. Sorry, couldnt resist =P
@browserspot I just wanted to say hi Shaq, never thought of you as an Engadget reader/commenter
@browserspot 5 inch?! what a hero
Oh no! I better not be dreaming...
Introducing the next Kin!
@brant09
The kin sold 8000 devices. At this price point thus will be the smartphone that sells worse than every before and after it
@DefPoet You are predicting that this will be the worse selling smartphone of all time? You may be a bit off. But, I'm willing to wager. $549 says it won't be the worst selling smartphone of all time.
@brant09
Yeah... if it hadn't already proved that it sells well in the UK.
Have a fail card.
@DefPoet
Yeah? I heard it was like 500.. The rest were MS employees. Nice try tho
Will wait for froyo...!!!
No thanks, I'll wait for the Samsung Galaxy Tab
Goodness, $300 with a contract?! It's going to fail against the $200 Captivate.
@guydude193
Somehow I believe they'll appeal to rather different consumers.
We'll See...
@guydude193
Actually, you can now get the Captivate for $90 on Amazon.
If you get it on amazon credit, it drops to $60.
But the deal expires today.
@guydude193
True. I originally planned to get the Streak (my contract actually expired last November and I've been holding off on renewing ever since). But I ended up with a Captivate, even though I don't really like Samsung. The streak just doesn't bring enough to the table to justify the extra cost. The Captivate has a nicer screen, faster cpu/gpu, more internal storage, and it's more pocketable. The only thing the Streak really has going for it is the 5" lcd.. seems kind of ridiculous to blow an extra $100 on it just for the screen, while forfeiting all the other goodies that come with the Captivate.
Dell Aero seems obsolete right out of the starting gate... though $100 on contract isn't too bad. What IS too bad is that the contract is with AT&T.
@Bhima
It's pretty bad when you compare it to the Aria - a superior phone you can get for free from amazon.
