Dell Streak retailing for $299 with contract, $549 without; Dell Aero gets launch deets as well
So, Dell still won't say when it will actually start selling and shipping the Streak in the US, but it did clear up a bit of confusion. First off, folks who register with the Streak pre-sale on Dell.com between July 20th and July 27th (yeah, today is the last day) get first access at ordering the phone. Pre-sale-ers will get an email link to buy the phone today, with the handset priced at $299.99 with a two-year AT&T contract, or $549.99 without. Meanwhile, Dell is being even more forthcoming in the Aero. It'll be available on August 9th for $99.99 with a contract and $299.99 without. So, are you ready for Dell to be a US phone manufacturer? Have you braced yourself? Because the time is at hand.
[Thanks, Jas]
Update: It looks like Dell has pulled its blog post we sourced this from. We'll let you know if the facts change, but for now we're gonna stick with these numbers.

$549?? Dude, I'm not getting a Dell.
The point is I don't want a phone that every Joe can pick up like the droid x or captivate which caters to women I think. I have to be different and having a 5 inch screen at $299 is dead on for me. I saw this price coming a mile off. People that are bashing this don't have a clue until you actually used one in person. This phone caters to the enthusiast single man crowd with money to spend and likes to have it better than the rest. 2.2 update Is right around the corner and if you do some research there is a fix for portrait mode as well. Some of you can't stand for something to come out that owns whatever you use so you have to bash it here. Move along and go read about your $99 garbage you just bought cause that's all you can afford chumps!
@Soldier1969
some of us expect a good product to go along with that price, and lol at you to trust any kind of release date for 2.2. until (if) it launches, you have a laughably bad 1.6 product.
@zbot
The only chump is the guy who buys whatever Dell is saying about an OS upgrade.
If it doesn't *ship* with Android 2.1 at the very LEAST, it's a huge fail.
Also, for the same price unlocked, you can just buy an iPad, a much better tablet option IMO.
Sadly, this is a fail on so many levels. Dell, do yourself a favor and read these comments when you do the analysis on why the streak failed.
You can't release an android 1.6 product, without portrait orientation, with little internal storage, with a too low res screen, with a proprietary connector, with a too high on contract price, and expect even the smallest success.
yes, we do want big screen choices, but not with the SIGNIFICANT limitations. get it together quickly, dell.
@zbot
LOL it is sort of a list of FAILS isn't it?
Seems almost like Dell went down the list of things people complain about... Must have gotten that list confused with the list of customer "wants".
The ONLY things they seem to have gotten right:
5" screen
Front facing cam
Replaceable battery
SD card slot
Gorilla glass
Everything else about this device form the OS version to the carrier, keyboard, orientation, resolution and price are all firmly in the Epic Fail category.
And Sadly, I'm probably still going to buy it... I'm with AT&T cause of the wife anyway and I want a 5" screen... But God Damn that Price tag is making me think twice.
@todrick
absolutely.
maybe someone else will jump on the 5" bandwagon and produce a device people want (and hopefully leave the bloatware custom UI mess off it).
@todrick Luckily, several of those "bad" items can be fixed with software updates. 2.2 will be out later this year, ADW Launcher app will allow for portrait orientation on home screen, and Better Keyboard app replaces the default keyboard. And there are something like half a dozen other keyboard apps on the marketplace you can choose from if Better Keyboard doesn't work for you.
Try changing the keyboard layout on an iPhone 4. No can do without jailbreaking.
550 for this? That's a little ridiculous knowing I can get an iPad for $500. But i guess all phones are that way.
@trey992 But that's for the entry level iPad with no 3g and minimum memory storage which you can't upgrade. 3G+wifi iPad with 32 GB is $749, with 64 GB it's $849!
You could get an iPad + Case with $549
Not going to happen. Sorry, Dell.
@(Unverified) But that's without 3G only 16 GB of storage space that you cannot upgrade. The 3G version with 16 GB is $629.
Considering the only official comment Dell has made today (via Twitter) is that no pricing or other news has benn released today, why is this information still being published by Engadget?
Wait, this thing doesn't have wifi? I recall reading an artcle just recently where half of you knuckleheads berated Sprint & Palm for leaving wifi off of the Pixi. What gives?
@JDGAFFLIN bad info, the Streak has wifi. I've been using one for 2 days on wifi only.
For 549 bucks I will want the The Big Red One (1st Div ref there)!
Also, does anyone know if AT&T will hunt you down and make you change your data plan even if you buy one of these unlocked?
Thanks in advance for anyone who answers my question!
I had the Dell for two weeks and it replaced an iPhone 3GS.
These are a few notes I made and obviously I could go into more detail with more time.
In no particular order:
The earphones were bargain store cheap with no volume control and music stayed on whilst using voice recognition.
The earphone controls didn't work when in standby so if you were listening to music you had to take it out of your pocket, unlock it, then use the earphone controls, lock it, and put it back into your pocket, just to skip a track. Why?!
The earphone port was on the side so was awkward in my pocket and didn't fit in the supplied case with the earphones plugged in. You need to have them constantly plugged in as it's way too big to use without said crappy earphones. You WILL get laughed at if you put it to the side of your head.
Proximity sensor just turned screen on and off with the slightest movement so if you wanted to look something up whilst on a call... well basically you couldn't.
Same price as an iPad in UK
Keyboard was more difficult to use than the iPhone's even though it had a bigger screen and the predictive text was ridiculous.
Didn't make use of extra screen size.
Back cover would come off and turn phone off at least once a day.
Really slow to load video clips and photo galleries compared to iPad.
Frequently disconnected from wifi and was sluggish compared to 3GS and HTC Desire.
Terrible battery life compared to 3GS it replaced.
Clunky OS.
Music player was useless and the folder system doesn't work (this is coming from someone who has used iTunes for several years so I know a useless folder system when I see one).
No mini USB.
Now the camera deserves a post of it's own.
It was comparable to the first digital camera I bought about 12 years ago you know the ones that take the shot a second after you've framed,fired and it's made the shutter noise, so you have no idea how the shot will turn out? White balance was WAY off and the front facing camera was even worse! It was so disappointing to take a shot and see 5 inches of blurred, off colour photo.
The good bits:
The screen though low resolution looked excellent and the gorilla glass was in perfect condition after two weeks of trying to stuff it in my pocket.
Free turn by turn navigation software was really good and looked really nice on it's large screen.
Free 16gig SD card was a bonus and the ability to use bigger/more cards is great.
I took it back and have replaced it with an iPhone 4. I know it has it's own issues but it is undoubtedly leaps and bounds ahead.
I genuinely have nothing against Dell and have nothing to gain from slagging it off but I was really looking forward to the Streak and it was just such a let down.
@Chehaven
thanks for the good rundown of issues/quirks.
i love many many things about android, but even 2.2 is behind iOS in a number of ways (and ahead of iOS in lots of ways and that's why i'm still on my nexus one on tmo). at 1.6, however, the streak is a joke (other than the awesome size of the screen) compared to iOS.
hopefully dell (or someone else) will hear us and offer a competitive device.
@Chehaven You're a Mac addict in disguise. The iPhone 4 is a flawed product because of it's antennae design. You can't fix that with software updates. The problems you mention with the Streak can all be dealt with through software updates except for the earphone port. But that's almost inconsequential because majority of people will use a bluetooth earpiece or just hold it up to their ear.
The iPhone 4, even with it's "retina" screen (talk about marketing) is too small for user friendly web browsing, game playing, navigation, ebook reading. All of those things can be done better on the Streak and the experience will only get better with 2.2

@Chehaven
Good review. Thanks. Sounds like teething trouble for Dell. Still, for competition's sake hopefully they stay/get in the game.
Here's to hoping that the subsidized pre-sale price is not the official subsidized price.
Sorry for the double post :-(
Lets hope something changes since they pulled the blog.
Seriously? This is insane. It's $50 MORE than the comparable Archos 5, WITH CONTRACT? If you people buy this, I've also got some beachfront property in Arizona with your name on it. Suckers.
The Skidmark UI is enough to put me off from this phone. I love Android, but it's possible to screw it up.
299 on a 2 year contract wtf.FAIL. thank god i got a evo 3 days ago.
$300 on contract for the Streak? That might be a bit much, but $550 off contract sounds right. And $300 for the Aero off contract? Holy shit. That's a steal when the iPhone is $600 off contract. I know the two phones don't compare but come on. That's half! Lol. Put it up against equal speced competition and you're looking at at least $400, if not more.
WTF Dell? I've waited like 3 months for the $500 US version to come out because I didn't want to spent $650 for the EU version. Now you're jacking up the price and you don't even have an actual release date? "End of July"?? - It's July 28th!
Screw this, over price phone. I'll pass on the Streak thanks again DELL.
Dell is really hurting themselves by teaming up with AT&T. Seriously? AT&T? wow
Isn't a PDA a bit ... 1996?
Does it come with a stylus and a game of Snake?
its a okay replacement for the long love Nexus One, i will buy where do i sign my life away ..........................
I was really looking forward to this phone but $300 is kinda steep I'll have to think about it alittle more.........
There's too much confusion out there and Dell isn't making anything particularly revolutionary with this unit. Seems to me like just another "me too" smartphone. Probably for some corporate customer who committed to Dell for the next 10 years.
my gawd it looks like a huuuggge storm lol
The Nexus One dies in North America and android device makers revert to their old ways! ;'(
Where the fuck is the pre-order emails? I thought it was coming out yesterday for pre-order.
Jeez dell is fucking this up, over and over again.
Well they changed the FAQ Answer to "The dell streak will be available for purchase soon" from the late july status...I mean Dell are you kidding with us here?
Hmmm, I'm remembering what a clusterfrack the original Dell Axim was now...
Delll is offering a pre- sale for the Streak. You will be able to purchase it 24 hours in advance of the general public and it includes a 99 cent upgrade offer to a bluetooth headset... http://dellu.com/OR/NicolasH_Streak
@nlhender8
Everyone knows this already. Don't know what that site is but I'm all set with clicking on it.
Common Dell... You've almost lost me.
