Pour one out: T-Mobile G1 no longer for sale
And just like that, the T-Mobile G1 is no more. A quick stock check at T-Mobile USA, Amazon, and a few other retailers confirms that the world's first Android handset is no longer for sale, marking the end of an era. Of course, it's been nearly two years since we first saw the G1, and its 528MHz Qualcomm processor and 320 x 480 3.2-inch display have been long since outclassed by the recent crop of high-end Android hardware, but we're still feeling a little nostalgic. They grow up so fast, don't they? Take a pause, take a sip, and let's look back on the original of the species.

They were still selling the G1?!
@EpsilonNot ugly!
Apparently.
You will be missed, dear friend. Well, when I get a new phone anyway.
Typed from my Aus-spec HTC Dream.
@EpsilonNot Thats what i was about to say. Who would buy that thing with the Nexus One on tmob?
@EpsilonNot
It sure lasted more than the Nexus One!
@EpsilonNot
My thoughts exactly....who would be buying these with so many other, better phones on the market??
@EpsilonNot Oh, What a tragedy! I loved you so much I knew you had potential and so strong withstood all those ROMs I ported into you day after day. Well at least you died of old age your predecessors are dying young now 7months tops. None will last as long as you.....Sigh :-(
@TheRealCJ
The death of the Original Android Gangster.
@TheRealCJ Indeed, still rocking my G1. Months before I can get out of this contract though, I'm sticking with Android though, it's stolen my heart
@EpsilonNot i LITERALLY watched my best friend sell the last one they had in stock at his store last wknd
@Jordus
Someone who wanted a physical keyboard, and didn't care about specs?
@EpsilonNot - I have a tear. One for you, and one for the G1.
Let us boy our heads to Grampa.
Rest in peace, the phone that started a revolution in the mobile industry. You will be missed :'(
A true OG... the G1... ya heard, G?
@ramia what... It is really ugly.
@Jordus People who wanted a physical keyboard or couldn't get a Nexus One. Me, for example. I'm on a family plan, so I didn't qualify for contract pricing on the Nexus One and I couldn't spend $530 on it. As far as wanting a keyboard, my options were G1 or Cliq. I took the G1.
@EpsilonNot - Yeah, they were still selling it and many of us who were still early enough on the train to be considered "early adopters" aren't out of our first contract on the phone. Myself, I'm still rocking my G1 and still love it. Admittedly around 6 keys on the keyboard have died on me, but it is a problem on the main board with the keyboard connector so it will cost less probably to get an unlocked and rooted on on eBay and roll with that until i'm out from under contract. Haven't decided on the next phone, but the wife and I are both sold on the fact that it WILL be an android phone.
@EpsilonNot
now lets look to the future... the G1 Blaze!
@EpsilonNot
Thats the exact same thing I though!
@nickcraze
It's the original phone of the greatest OS known to man.
@Mister Green My contract is up in September...I'll prob just go month to month after that since I have an N1 (bought retail while still had a G1) I was thinking of upgrading to the Vibrant but nah....stock for me...I'll see what T-mobile comes out with next...the G1 Blaze..if Stock...may be my next phone...but if this dual core Android 3.0 phone is really coming I'll wait for that...I'm in no rush to replace my Nexus anyways...so take ur time T-mobile.
@EpsilonNot
Yep, they were. The little phone that could. I love my G!, most dependable device I've had, and pretty much all I need, until I get a G1 Blaze (Sorry Nexus 1). Unlike most visitors to the site, I have very basic telephony needs.
@TheRealCJ Yes, although I still like my G1 (running 2.2) it is getting a bit long in the tooth. I think I will have to wait for this supposed HTC Emerald later this year.
@AbsoluteDesignz no take your time crap. I've got a G1 and I need to upgrade it. The vibrant just doesn't do it for me. It's got a beautiful screen but I want two cameras and a flash.
@ZLiberator
"successors". "Predecessor" is its opposite.
Normally I keep my mouth shut about this kind of stuff, but this is the second time I've seen this specific case of saying the exact opposite of what you mean here in a week. (I've pretty much given up on the "COULD care less" crowd.)
G1: Thanks for breaking ground on an awesome OS
@EpsilonNot
I still use mine everyday. I'm running 2.2 with ease. and it feels twice as fast as the day I got it
@SolidSnake
OG1 indeed.
I just sold mine (white one, no less), as I moved on to a Samsung Vibrant. Screen is amazing, but I miss the GPS accuracy of the G1.

@PDOG
True dat. It does run 2.1 & 2.2 nicely. Switching apps is often slow though while it unloads and loads from it's tiny cache of memory.
I had a Dream...
@ramia No I insist. It is the ugliest phone ever. Maybe the OS is great and everything but as a phone it's just plain ugly to any human with any N of eyes.
@Mister Green Amen. Me and my wife have G1's. I remember the talk of Android in its infancy...look at it now. G1 I SALUTE YOU
Sent by my vanilla G1!
@MoonWalkerCTE
The phone that revolutionized the mobile industry needs a eulogy!?!
But the iPhone isn't going anywhere?
Finally?
@pple is poo
Same here. Aside from the outed android version I'd prefer a cheap G1 to any android device out there...4 inch Super-AMOLED screens mean very little to me.
That'll do, G1. That'll do.
You had a good, no, great run.
@Squalor
It almost lasted longer than the Droid.
@Squalor lasted longer than the Nexus One. That's impressive!!
@Squalor I will miss that hinge...
@E30 Kid
If my math is correct, the G1 came out almost a year before the Droid did...right? So the droid has another year to go before it can be in the same boat as the G1.
@lp894 The Droid has already been canned in favor of the Droid 2 and Droid X etc.. Just 7months
@lp894
I meant that from a pure timing perspective, not lifespan.
@E30 Kid The HTC Hero is Now the Oldest Android Phone in existence thats still being sold 10mos Long live the HERO!
@ZLiberator
That doesn't even take the fact that it came here a few months late. The Euro Hero is almost as old as the G1.
@yankees368
I'm pretty sure the Kin phones are the only ones that didn't last as long as the N1 (at least in the US market, it's still for sale in other places).
@Squalor
All revolutions have to start at a single point, and this one ignited one hell of a revolution.
Salute.
On this historic day, just thought I would add my thoughts to the many who will comment here.
The G1 was an incredible, game changing phone. I'm still using mine and going strong. How so, you ask? Because it may have just been the most extensible, customizable, hackable phone ever made. Since rooting, I've changed aspects of my phone with my mood. I've had all kinds of versions of Sense UI, and every major revision of stock Android, along with many custom ROMs built and modded by some of the best hackers and developers on the web.
Would I like a newer phone for next-gen 3D gaming? Sure. And I'll have one as soon as I can lay my hands on one. But I have a feeling my G1 will be kicking around for a while, just to keep messing with it's insides and see how far I can push the best phone I've ever had.
@Squalor
White G1 FTW!
@lp894
Difference is, Droid has a replacement. Unfortunately HTC has not gotten a high end current version out to replace it... yet.
@E30 Kid Hilariously, I own both a G1 and a euro Hero. Both amazing phones, but if I had to do it all over again, I'd not buy the Hero. The G1 was a great device, and there are certain aspects of it I still miss, like that quirky swivel-slide it did to open the keyboard. My Nexus One is great, but it certainly doesn't have the magic that the G1 did when I first bought it.
And I just installed 2.2 on mine...
I'm surprised they've been selling up to now though, with so many other options.
Now maybe I can sell mine for more..
