Back when we outlined the
iOS 4 features missing from iPhone 3G, we forgot one key bullet point: performance. As more and more two-year veterans of Apple's phones have taken the plunge and upgraded to the latest firmware, slowdown and battery drain issues have become a common complaint, which is even more irksome when you think of just how little the update really adds to the UI.
The Wall Street Journal reports speaking to an
Apple spokesperson who said the company is looking into the matter. That doesn't necessarily mean a fix is coming anytime soon, but hey, at least you can
hold the darn thing however you want.
This changes everything.
@liquidkernel
All. Over. Again.
@liquidkernel
Of course Engadget forgot one KEY bullet point regarding iphone issues 8-)
@liquidkernel
Again.
100+ comments coming up!
@liquidkernel b like Google Apple. Release the darn thing, but it in beta mode for 6months or so. Let the community test it by invitation. And release it...
No secrets, no fuss.
@NuklearPanda I better unsubscribe from email alerts for this post. My mail server is going to hate me.
Why isn't this breaking? This should be breaking.
@BlackedOut
We'll make it Breaking with 500+ comments! Let's get it on guys :p
@liquidkernel Again.
@liquidkernel
I've definitely noticed that my iPod Touch is more jittery than before.
@CarlosMobile
oh yeah ...sure they forgot it ! This is so lame Engadet and your pathetic excuse "but hey, at least you can hold the darn thing however you want" doesn't work
@HellFlyer
Excuse for what? Engadget didn't say anything that they shouldn't of in this article.
If you don't like Engadget, then get off this site and go back to Gizmodo...
@Androidsugly
The app folders are 4x3.
@liquidkernel
My iPod touch 3G with 4.0 goes from 90% battery to 5% battery overnight if I leave WiFi on ... it would lose 1-2% with the previous OS ... UNACCEPTABLE!
@liquidkernel
Hey, so much for "it just works!"
@HellFlyer
I'm sick of all you engadget haters, if you don't like the articles then get off this site all you bitchez
@Androidsugly
You can actualy view the photo from the camera app. It even gives you a thumbnail of the last picture you took. Just sayin...
@liquidkernel
Lol, yup, I jumped ship to Android. Dont get me wrong, I like the iPhone, but I like being able to open my text messages on my Captivate and not have yo wait 15 seconds to see my message.
@Neotyguy40 What's wrong with Gizmodo?
@liquidkernel Issues regarding iPhone 3G ios 4 updates? How about 3rd gen? Some people have had serious slow down and battery drain on it, I pwrsonally have only had 10 second slower startup, but not much else, and it was terrible on day 1
@liquidkernel
iOS4 is also slow on 3GS!
Not as slow as on 3G, but definitely lag in many movement between apps and loading of apps. Safari is 3 seconds slower on startup, which seems forever compared to what it used to be.
@Stratus41298 ...and again.
@liquidkernel
I wonder why Apple preloaded iOS4 with bugs and errors..
Oh wait, to stop jailbreaking.
Thats right, nice one, Apple.
Looks like this is Apple's Vista.
@daytripper
Apple's Vista? More like Apple's Millennium Edition
@Mike10010100
Could be cause they did multitasking "right".
Really you all now see the difference between closed & open ecosystems.
Sure you can jailbreak a iphone, but could be buggy, much like an Android jailbreak. But android has OEM roms allover the place where as apple already moved 3.2 to the dust bin.
@liquidkernel These Apple guys must be super engineers to be figuring the stuff out so fast.
@Mike10010100......same here!!! I was all excited about the ios4, and then I got it and then I wished I never did!!! :((( [mega sad face]
@BlackedOut
Agreed. This should have been breaking news a couple of days after the 4.x shit firmware / OS hit the 3G. Unfortunately, Engadget's heads are so far up their asses that all they can concentrate on is iPads, and iPhone 4's... All they had to do is take one look in the Apple 3G forum, or read their email, to know there was a huge fucking problem.
Conversation at Engadget:
--"Hey! I hear that some guy made an iPad case out of an egg carton - and it smells like shit too!"
--"Cool. Let's lead with that."
It's kind of sad that Engadget got the story from the WSJ, and not from the skilled set of "writers" they have on staff.
@liquidkernel didnt apple claim their huge fanbase was cause of how fast they react to things like this?
it's call artificial slowdown to make people upgrade the hardware
"guys lets look into it!"
"define #IS_IPHONE3G 0"
"define#IS_IPHONE3GS 1"
"make"
"Fixed!!"
@recharged95
I'm getting mixed messages from your comment... Would the fact that it's jittery mean that they DIDN'T do multitasking right? Are you being sarcastic?
And I think the abundance of ROMs is a good thing....
Next time could you be a bit more clear regarding what you're saying?
@liquidkernel
@Neotyguy40 "shouldn't OF"
GAH. >:(
@hostbot ..... and AGAINNNN
@air on
I'm on iPhone 4, now, but when I had the 3GS, I thought it was snappier and generally worked better with iOS 4. Not that I am discounting your experience. I can corroborate the subject of this article (iPhone 3G problems with iOS 4). I have two 3G friends who upgraded and are not happy.
@DCIFRTHS
or even better lets post that article on Justin Bieber on a Segway, it's gonna be classic
@air on Sounds like your 3gs is now on par with a G1....at least I have multitasking [hold home] aaah. Facebook!
@nuck Exact same for me. And I'm an Enterprise user so this isn't good at all. Perhaps the 5th top money grossing law firm I work for should speak up. ;)
@liquidkernel I think the biggest complaint I get from my end users are the problems they are having with Exchcange and IOS4 - subfolders not syncing, calendars being off, freeze ups on sync etc. There is an interim patch but most don't know about it. Turns out IOS4 can actually hang an exchange server!
The weird thing is that either who has what issue is random or a lot of people aren't reporting to me their issues - a lot have reported exchange problems but a lot haven't either.
@liquidkernel
I think this illustrates things quite well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pdk2cJpSXLg
@zob
"it's call artificial slowdown to make people upgrade the hardware
"guys lets look into it!"
"define #IS_IPHONE3G 0"
"define#IS_IPHONE3GS 1"
"make"
"Fixed!!""
I upgraded alright....
Straight to a Samsung Captivate!!
Peace out APPLE!
@nuck My iPod Touch 32gb 3rd Gen acted this afternoon like so:
* Went from somewhere 75%+ this afternoon...
* Was turned OFF for a few hours...
* Turned back on and instantly said "20% Remaining" battery.. which then slowly grew in 5% intervals up to *GASP* a whole 45%.
Did I mention it's only had a few App Updates (some compatible/some accidentally NOT compatible) and ITS STILL RUNNING OS3, no OS4 update!!! >:( >:( >:( WHAT THE HECK!??!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!
@Jupitergeek My iPod is also ONLY 2.5 MONTHS old.
It is quite sluggish... Downgrade to 3.1.3 seems like the best way to go for the time being...
@MrFairladyz
how so? ive tried downgrading mine before..but to no avail.
@MrFairladyz Agree downgrade. Nothing on 4.0 for 3G owners is worth it IMO.
@MrFairladyz
Actually, all you need to do is disable spotlight indexing, and you should experience a significant performance increase, at least until apple fix what it is that makes it suck.
@MrFairladyz
This is true, in fact i have a huge problem with my 3G
None of my photos render properly, and ive tried resyncing and everything and the problem still exists.
All my photos in the album are super pixelated.
On top of that, my phone is just incredibly slow.. especially maps...
my God...
