Actually, all you need to do is disable spotlight indexing, and you should experience a significant performance increase, at least until apple fix what it is that makes it suck.
@MrFairladyz This is true, in fact i have a huge problem with my 3G None of my photos render properly, and ive tried resyncing and everything and the problem still exists. All my photos in the album are super pixelated. On top of that, my phone is just incredibly slow.. especially maps... my God...
@MrFairladyz The 4.0 and 4.0.1 updates on my wife's and my 3g are a big part of what caused us to drop them in favor of a couple Android phones. She picked up the Aria and I grabbed the Captivate.
@Zuato : +1. Got tired of jailbreaking the little lady's iPhone 3G for Tmo, then one day it just died. She was stamping her feet for another iPhone but Costco got the Vibrant's in that same day for $99. I said "let's try a couple for a week, if you don't like it i'll get a 3GS off ebay".
A week later I said "okay ready to go back to iPhone", she shot me the "you just fucked my best friend" type glare, she's obsessed with it now, especially after I bought her a 16GB microSDHC card and loaded up a whole bunch of movies in 720p MKV.
@rhomaion What's not too understand apple released a faulty upgrade so he jumped ship.. I loved my htc touch pro, and I still like HTC and winmo.. but my touch pro overheated every once in a while and could get slow sometimes.. Now I have a samsung moment.. and the galaxay s is the best phone put now

It is quite sluggish... Downgrade to 3.1.3 seems like the best way to go for the time being...
@MrFairladyz
how so? ive tried downgrading mine before..but to no avail.
@MrFairladyz Agree downgrade. Nothing on 4.0 for 3G owners is worth it IMO.

@Zuato Right because upgrading to the iPhone 4 didn't make sense? I don't understand.
