HTC beginning Froyo rollout tomorrow? Maybe, maybe not
HTC Europe director Mark Moons caused quite a stir this morning when he tweeted that the company would begin rolling out Android Froyo updates to devices tomorrow, starting with the Desire, but we wouldn't get too excited yet -- HTC tells us that it's possible a rollout will begin tomorrow, but nothing's finalized yet pending some final testing. We've certainly got our fingers crossed -- and we're sure Desire owners the world over will be hitting that System Updates button nonstop for the next few days.

@Steven
3.5" is small but I bet Froyo would look great on the retina display.
EVO PLEASE, I'm really hurting without the voicedial from bluetooth feature.
Does this include the EVO...cause I rather not root it. Too many side effects.
@nxp3
No side effects from root unless you use a crappy ROM. If nothing else, you can run dead stock and flash one of the kernels that remove the FPS cap with no ill effects.
To be honest, this fills me with no excitement. I will have to wait for my network provider to okay FroYo, if they even want to, or Else Orange FroYo is a NoNo!
@andybondy
What's this? I'm on orange UK with a desire, are they going to deny me christmas :(
@wolfticket II After Google pass FroYo to HTC for Sense-ification, HTC will have to pass it to Orange so they can add their start up screen and those apps/games/cack. I'm sure Orange will provide, eventually.
EVO PLEASE
HERE WE GO EVO... HERE WE GO...
Huh? People are not using 2.2 already? :P
Well, Desire is pretty much a clone of the N1, and I'm surprised it actually took this long to port Sense to 2.2. Oh wait, it's not even released in the US. Good luck wishing and hoping for updates on your carrier-controlled phones.
@pika2000
u mad?
Eldar already got OTA.
"@eldarmurtazin
Hmm, some minor as i see update, not Froyo, but the date of update version is 28/07/10 Strange"
Sorry jumped the gun.
since i rooted and flashed damagecontrol rom im not that interested in froyo anymore. i have my full flash and better battery life now and im very very happy.
does this mean i'll have to un-root my phone to have it?
OMG!!! I GOT A DESIRE!!! I LIVE IN HOLLAND!!! I'M SO EXCITED!!!
Well, not that excited, but you get the idea...
htc evo needs this. But a ? I have is where can I buy a nexus 1 now that google has stopped selling it?
@ramia
I have to say that after what HTC pulled with the Hero's software update that showed up about a year later than they promised, this is a very welcome change of pace. Especially since I bought a Desire not too long ago.
I knew I was following Mark Moons for a reason.
Froyo? It's Frozen Yogurt from the planet Krypton
Put some Froyo on my EVO. Please !
gief! My Wildfire is begging for froyo, 528mhz isn't the fastest on android 2.1, hoping things will improve quite a bit.
Think this is a response to moto maybe rolling out froyo also? I sure hope so. Competition is awesome.
For people who are updating, do you need to back up data and restore afterwards, or is this more like updating Ubuntu or applying Windows updates, for example, where it leaves the data untouched? I got my sister a HTC Desire - her first smartphone and she loves it - and I'm just wondering if this has the potential to lose all her stuff.
Any love for the Aria?
Got 2.2 last week on Vodafone UK, auto updating apps and being able to watch flash videos is excellent! Watched a 30 minute tv program and my battery was barely touched, got a little hot but all good
Personally I think Apple not wanting to allow flash has less to do with all the BS they spout about it and more to do with the phone not being able to handle it well, maybe ip4 could do it but they would have to back track too far.
At the end of the day they ARE just phones... I prefer my n1 over my wifes iPhone for the simple reason that I can put the icons where I want on the screen and have widgets - like a picture of my daughter that is not covered with icons.
Everything else is the same as far as I can see, people who rant and rave probably actually haven't experienced both....
froyo baggins?
I hope we get Froyo soon! I've been waiting too long for this frozen desert!
Here we go again. Again!
I bet my carrier won't send it out as an update for at least... say 4 months. But I'm sure I'll find a way to put sense froyo on my beloved desire.
Wonder if they are gonna include their promised DivX update for desire.. Hey I'll take H.264 for that matter. Right now it supports basically no video format of interest and I've had to use a software decoder.
@Wokis are you stupid or something? The videos you watch on your desire are h.264
@ce782138
First off. Just because of the anonymity of internet, you feel it's ok to call someone stupid over a think like that? I'd suggest you take some time and think about what you're doing on communities like this. Maybe you shouldn't be here?
Second off, as far as I know, you can't encode a H.264 .mp4 file and make it play in the built in video player. I've tried multiple times with multiple profiles, but so far only mpeg 4 video has worked. That youtube videos and similar works is a whole other thing that isn't my issue.
@Wokis
Ignore the twit above, not sure what it is about Engadget commenters. I have successfully encoded h.264 videos for my Desire using Handbrake
A little bit of white wee just came out.
Or was it Froyo?
Looks like Mark Moons' gonna be looking for a new job......
So, does anyone know if the Samsung Captivate will also be getting FroYo soonish? I know it's sorta off topic, but I didn't see that information anywhere. Can't wait to get mine! I get my financial aid check monday, and I'm going straight to the AT&T store to buy it. Such a sexy phone :D
If anyone's experiencing battery problems one way to conserve battery life, for those of you who consume a lot of video, is to download Skyfire for your video browsing. Due to our ability to transcode video into Html5, and do the heavy lifting/compression on our end, this can dramatically conserve battery when compared video consumption with other browsers and optimized mobile video. This goes for any Droid device.
@Tes
Ah okay. Interesting. Might I ask what settings you've used? Resolution, ref frames, b-frames and whatnot?
Hopefully it'll get to the Evo soon. Actually, all HTC devices for that matter.
@manicmick84
Stock Android 2.2 is already available for the EVO. Visit XDA Developers for more information.
G-1 please!
evo 2.2 cant wait
You don't need to wait for the Desire, Froyo exist with Modaco R6 Rom. I use since 2 weeks and it's the best rom for this device...
hi i am Adam Prince of Eternia, fabulous secrets were revealed to me when i held aloft my magic sword and said "by the power of Froyo" and I became EVO! the most powerful Android Phone in the universe!
well it sounded way cooler in my head anyway.
Froyo = Windows 7 of Android.
@qrius Not exactly. Android 2.1 is already doing everything I want it to, much like XP. 2.2 will be like 64bit XP on steroids. I think Gingerbread will be WIndows7.
so where the hell is my Moto Droid 2.2 android update....i am beginning to hate Moto for crap like this
they tell me "soon" i assume that means within the quarter of Froyo going public, but NOOO
Still no froyo here in good old austria!
Still no froyo here in Switzerland too :(
It seems that the Tweet of Moons was a little premature. Guess we'll have to wait a little longer.
Now available on Vodafone in the UK
