Motorola takes another shot at the iPhone 4, says Droid X is 'no jacket required'
Well this is getting good. Motorola was one of the first to take a subtle swipe at Apple's iPhone 4 antenna dilemma with an ad saying you could hold the Droid X "any way you like," Apple came right back with a video purportedly showing the Droid X suffering similar attenuation issues when held in the right hand, and now Moto's responded with this cheeky ad that plays off Apple's free iPhone case solution by saying the Droid X can make calls "without a bulky phone jacket." Yeah, it's pretty good -- particularly because unlike most other phones, we haven't been able to death grip the Droid X with any noticeable effect on 3G reception. (Although, truth be told, we can drop the WiFi signal by a few bars pretty easily.) Either way, we're certainly enjoying this little slice of swagger from Moto -- check a larger version after the break.

Get em!
@mot65 good! If apple can be such a dick, Motorola knows how to deal with it!
@mot65 -- whatever... My iPhone 4 is still smaller than the Droid X even if I decide to get a "jacket"... The 4"+ screen is "bulky" to me...
@mot65
Stick it up your @ss and smoke it apple.
IF it needs a jacket, you blew it.
@mot65 I'm happy Motorola isn't afraid to go after Apple in ADS and not just a statement that only techies online will see. When the iPhone 4 was unveiled, Jobs bragged about how it was magical and brilliant engineering and something no one has done. Now Apple knows why.
It's hysterical to me that Jobs was screaming, "We're magical and different!" before and now has changed his tune to "All phones suck, not just ours! We're all the same, the entire industry, as a whole!"
It's insulting to consumers and manufacturers alike.
Go Moto.
@PolarBearTC The Droid X is extremely thin. There's a difference between bulk and a footprint, and when the only thing making the phone big is the huge screen that the person buying a Droid X obviously wants then it's clearly a complete non-issue.
@JONNNathannn
And I love how Apple ignores the bridging problem and goes right to the "Oh, all phones have signal attenuation issues if you hire a giant to hold the phone so tightly it's almost crushed."
Yeah, just keep going there Apple. We'll enjoy our phones without exterior antennas and antenna detuning issues.
Can't get it outside USA = useless. :p
@mot65 moto is nakiidddddd
@troy polamalu That's what she did.
@mot65 iPhone. Always comes with latest firmware. Pre-loaded.
@iKid
*until Sep 30th
@mot65
Im just glad moto's willing to dive into the pit and throw some dirt at apple. Apple deserves to get a taste of its own medicine after years of those "hi im a mac, im a pc" ads. At least this time its legit instead of all those apple ads.
@troy polamalu For your health.
@mot65
if there's one thing droid DOESN'T... it's needing a jacket.
@mot65
Payback!
@Mike10010100 how well does the droid make calls overseas? and since we're on the subject, is there a checked baggage fee? clearly it won't fit in the overhead bin ;) i kid.
Maybe a better tagline would have been:
"DROID Does Phone Calls"
....maybe too harsh??
@mot65
This really turns out to be a war!
So child(ish) reminds me of when I used to argue over everything when I was a kid... but I can see the point in it now.
I really fail to understand why people have started bashing Apple so much. Most (actually, ALL) people I know who have an iphone 4 like their phone. (i myself am waiting for the white one) All the reviews were extremely positive. The flaw with the antenna is a small problem easily avoidable by using a bumper, case or avoiding touching that spot. Heck even if you touch it, the signal goes lower only in weak signal areas, even then often call does not drop. Even engadget did a poll among tech critics and a majority said they dont have any problems as such in their day-to-day usage even with this antenna flaw:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/13/yes-the-iphone-4-is-broken-no-the-iphone-4-is-not-broken/
The only thing why some people wanted Apple to do something for this problem is that they expect "flawless" products from apple. Now they are not God or something... its okay, all phones have their small flaws.
Now Apple is even offering free cases to solve this small problem -- after this there should be no more complaints left, (most people actually get cases anyway) -- but still there has been a wave of anti-apple emotions and propaganda brewing up -- without any logical basis.
I really fail to understand why people are just starting to cricitize apple here.. this is really not making any sense.
Even gizmodo, which is not friendly to Apple in any way, wrote a concluding piece how they disliked Apple's response in the press conference
http://gizmodo.com/5589336/apple-antennagate-and-why-its-time-to-move-on
But even after that dislike towards Apple's response, they ended their article with their final say as:
"The iPhone 4 is a fantastic phone—among the best yet made—and the antenna issue may dent its crown, but doesn't dethrone it."
Thats exactly how I feel -- even with this antenna issue (and as long as they provide a software fix for the proximity sensor issue as promised), the iphone 4 is still the best phone around.... and if the walled garden makes you feel closed, you can easily jailbreak (its one click) your phone and install anything.. The combined number of apps in the app store and in the jailbreak cydia store blow away the number of android apps.
@Android sugly
you clearly have never held an X, go back to holding jobs' P
@mot65 Love how when Apple disses another product people bitch out, but when another company disses Apple, everybody says you go girl.
@mot65
It's payback time for Apple - a result of all those TV ads poking fun at flaws in Vista.
Don't dish it out Apple if ya can't take it.
oh engadget, get over the iphone 4, you're right, it is the best Smartphone, if you're not left handed
@grkhetan
I'll tell you why people love getting back at Apple. They claim that their product is new, fantastic, magical, and is better than any other product. The iPhone fanboys love to mention the sales and how awesome their product is in every post they make.
"all phones have their small flaws. Now Apple is even offering free cases to solve this small problem"
SMALL flaws? You mean like having a place where you can touch the phone with one finger to have it drop the signal? Or how about having a new phone that drops more calls that the older phone? The free cases that cost them 10 cents to make? Hahahaha! Wow! What a generous company!
" the iphone 4 is still the best phone around.... and if the walled garden makes you feel closed, you can easily jailbreak (its one click) your phone and install anything.. The combined number of apps in the app store and in the jailbreak cydia store blow away the number of android apps."
That's your opinion. Android is quickly catching up to the iPhone. Jailbreak is disabled and re-enabled whenever Apple updates the phone. I'd rather have more choice than that.
@Goaliegeek
Combination of Apple's near perfect record (with the fanboys) + high priced devices + perfectionist nature.
Also, Apple is criticizing the wrong problem with every other phone. Signal attenuation vs. detuning the antenna.
@Mike10010100 To be fair, for most iPhone users, the bridging issue isn't a problem. There are plenty of evidence on the forums and on youtube of people deathgripping the phone to cause bars to decrease but bridging the antennas didn't cause any dropped call or signal degradation.
@grkhetan I understand what you're saying.
But I defiantly do not agree about Gizmodo. They are a little bitter about the iPhone 4 prototype dilemma, but they are still huge fanboys and very biased. they called Steve Jobs "Jesus" and the iPhone the "Jesus Phone" just last week. I don't listen to anything they say, I've lost all credibility towards them and their information will always come out tainted with bias reviews.
@grkhetan Soooooo, what are they doing about the proximity issue? Oh, that's right. They should have tested and repaired both issues before launch. That is what all the rediculing is for. That they went in with their pride instead of thinking thoroughly through.
I personally commend motorola for doing this. It gives apple a taste oftheir own medicine.
Toma!!
@PolarBearTC
Must suck to have small girly hands.
@PolarBearTC
So you admit HD looks better on the bigger screen the Droid X is rocking.
thanks
@Androidsugly
If the Droid X needed a jacket I'm pretty sure it would be located in the Big & Tall section.
@troy polamalu
I've blown it a few times without a jacket, just ask my ex.
@Androidsugly Read the anandtech article. The signal bars in iOS 4.01 are now much more "pessimistic" than Android (they weren't before though).
@H264
I loved Moto's not-so-subtle ad. Apple quite deserves it!

@grkhetan
I guess you didn't hear about the Iphone 4 wifi and Bluetooth problems. You need to surf the tech sites more.
And the reason why so much folks bad mouth apple; Stevo talks to much trash about the other manufactures. Look at what there doing now in order to take the spot light off the issues the phone is having; start pointing fingers. Apple has made a very nice device, but the way they go about business and things rubs me the wrong way. There is nothing Flawless about a device you pay full price for an you don't really own it; and when it crashes they send you a used one instead of a new one.
@Androidsugly you must be drunk. Apple changed the bars so the measurement wouldn't be so unusually condensed. The way the bars were before, they gave a false positive. On their old system, loosing three bars was like losing one bar on other systems.
@mot65
Pfft... and what percentage of people will get the reference...? like 0.005%... the rest will say "? Motorola's still in business? Woah.."
@PolarBearTC
4 to 4.3 inches is the best size for a phone... unless you have little girly hands, then you probably need the gay little iPhone.
@Wesscoast
Nope. Everyone knows what a Droid is. In fact, they tend to call every Android phone a Droid.
It's so much fun watching and iFanboy's narrative come crashing to the ground.
@grkhetan
Mike has already answered you but I had to add something. Apple advertised a magical phone which was the best thing since biscuits with butter and strawberry jam. You paid for that. Now you get a phone with hardware issues and a company which is unable to recognize their mistakes blaming other companies instead and giving a bumper as a solution and telling you to hold the phone in a different way.
I you as a consumer are fine with a company displaying such kind of abusive treatment and arrogance and are ok feeding such company then good for you.
I was honestly thinking on getting an iPhone4 for my wife. Even when here in Australia some people say we won't have this kind of reception problems, but neither me nor my wife can stand this kind of behaviour from a company.
@mot65
hahah go Droid X, Ive been selling these for awhile now but have yet to actually play with one myself. I should open up a package and try it out lol
I LOL'ed at the headline. So true. With my "jacket" I love my iPhone. Without it, i f---ing hate this thing.
/Sent from my iPhone 4
@Androidsugly I wear slightly tight jeans and I have no issues with the phone in my pocket.
@The Dark Knight -- 6'-4" | 225lbs | size 16 boot | Marine, with anything BUT "girly" hands, thank you.
And the entire office that I work at uses iPhone 4s, including my boss who worked 25+ years with Hughes Aircraft, Space Division of GE. He loves his iPhone 4 and has no issue with it.
We are not apple fanboys, but when people personally bash me or my friends for liking my phone and finding no problem with it? That's where we have issues.
I know close to 50 people that are using iPhone 4s. I know about 10 using Droids and I know 2 with Droid Xs (got theirs early). Droid users like to kid, and that's fine. They tried to "death grip" my phone with no luck. I don't use a case - or a shield.
I like to run with my phone strapped to my arm. Anything larger than my iPhone feels too big on my arm. It already feels heavy, and I can't imagine a Droid X or EVO on my arm, or in my pocket. They're too big, and feel too bulky.
Anyone that can legitimately tell me that my phone is flawed, and my thinking about the Droid X being to large for my needs is wrong, I welcome it.
@mot65 bumpers aren't bulky, previous iPhone cases were bulky, dumb android users get cases for their phones which make them 2 inches thick, and this whole thing is getting obnoxious
@PolarBearTC real marines tie additional brick to their arm when exercising because any phone is just too light. You some kind of softie?
@The Dark Knight
You must really like your doctor.
@JONNNathannn
Agreed.
Way to go Moto for having the guts to fight back publicly for real, unlike the Nokias, RIMs and HTCs who were all too defensive, whispering their weak response, which pretty much no one heard.
