Well this is getting
good. Motorola was one of the first to
take a subtle swipe at Apple's iPhone 4 antenna dilemma with an ad saying you could hold the Droid X "any way you like," Apple came
right back with a video purportedly showing the Droid X suffering similar attenuation issues when held in the right hand, and now Moto's responded with this cheeky ad that plays off Apple's
free iPhone case solution by saying the Droid X can make calls "without a bulky phone jacket." Yeah, it's pretty good -- particularly because unlike most other phones, we haven't been able to death grip the Droid X with any noticeable effect on 3G reception. (Although, truth be told, we
can drop the WiFi signal by a few bars pretty easily.) Either way, we're certainly enjoying this little slice of swagger from Moto -- check a larger version after the break.
not as good as Samsung's Hellllo, but nice try.
wish we could use the droid x in AUS :(
One thing is for sure, the next iPhone will DEFINITELY not have a problem with reception when held.
lol Android fans just CAN'T let it go. Its like your entire lives revolve around the iPhone.
@TechWhiz954 Can't let what go. Apple attacked Moto so they fired back. It anything Apple can't seem to just own up and let it go.
@TechWhiz954 its because they feel they have to justify that their phones are relevant and just as good as the iphone.. im assuming because the iphone has higher sales numbers,support and more media coverage. the thing thats funny is that even with att's suffering network and an antenna issue, most people would still rather buy an iphone over an android phone. i think that drives them crazy.
@system22
android is the only smart phone that has seen a growth while all others (iphone included has decreased). The new iphone increased those numbers but thats how it when ever a new big name phone comes out. give it a couple quarters for the buzz to die down and you'll continue to see android grow while all other os's decline
@auneakeffect except youre forgetting that the iphone 4 sold higher numbers than any other smartphone... ever. the numbers that i know you are referencing don't even reflect iphone4 sales. also when you factor in that both sprint and verizon lost money last quarter while apple and att raked it in is another indicator that the iphone will still be the dominant phone for probably a little while. its true that android phones have been increasing but its also probably important to note that android is available on multiple devices on multiple carriers. the iphone is one single phone, manufactured by one company, making its own os and being sold by one carrier (in the US) yet it is still the dominant force in the market and the phone that every other manufacturer strives to beat.
@system22
if there was only one android phone...lets just say the droid on verizon do you know how many people would own that droid? All of the nexus one owners, all of the evo owners, all of the g1 owners, etc would own the droid. You should also consider that the droid reached 1 million devices sold in a shorter time than the iphone did..and this is with a plethora of other android devices to choose from decreasing the total number of droid sales. This is also after everyone already signed a 2 year contract with att and the iphone. Its easy to sell the most phones when there is only one choice for your customers to choose from.
@system22 :
You should watch the movie "Ideocracy". There are a lot more Idiots in the world than Intelligent people. There are more noob's in the world than Geeks. When a company over hypes its products and spins tall tales about technology that they do not develop themselves, its a given that all a majority of the folk who don't know better would buy into the hype.
Apple used to be great computer and gadget company in the 80's, They are no longer one. They are a home appliance company these days. They do not make computers and gadgets, they make electronic appliances. Even their advertising is akin to that of electronic/electric appliances. Saying iPhone sells more than other phones is like saying TV's sell more than Computers. Of course they do.
If the superiority of a device is determined by volume of sales, then Nokia sells a lot more phones than Apple does despite how big Apple's launch month numbers may look like.
@DarthGeek i never said superiority. what i was saying is that its been the most successful. furthermore calling people who really don't care about the technicals "noobs" is just immature. some people just don't care as much and just want something simple that works.
Yeah moto, you don´t need a jacket, but a jacket xxl with hump on it´s bag. The Droid x is a freaking brick.
@bingster
Posted exactly like someone who's never actually even seen or held the Motorola DROID X.
Remember not everyone has your little dainty hands, delicately thin fingers, or cares to stare endlessly into display of a mere 3.5 inches (regardless of the pixel density) when there are several more ergonomically suitable option available - Like the DROID X.
@DaHarder you don't have to passive aggressively belittle the competition to justify your own preference. some people don't want a huge phone. some people do.
@system22
You obviously missed the 'underlying theme' of my post: One Size Seldom Fits All... Choice Is Good.
@bingster
The Hump is symbolic too.
If you put the Droid X on top of the iPhone, it looks like its humping it.
@DaHarder no i got it. i just also got the slight of the smaller screen.
@DaHarder
Yep, droid x, droid incredible, droid 2. Pick your flavor, they are all delicious. Especially with froyo knocking at the door.
@deedeedee What a big messy jumble of text
My iPhone 4 works perfectly without a bumper.
God I hate stupidity. People have been complaining about the iPhone reception problem without ever using one.
I'm so tired of hearing about this made up problem.
@Greg7388 Strange that a "made up problem" forced SJ to hold a conference to give people free cases. Strange indeed.
In other strange news: greg7388 and his entire way of dismissing a problem many people have because HE doesn't have it
@SoulWeaponry Me and 99.45% of iPhone users.
News companies perpetuated the myth to make money off all the ads. The more people comment, the more they have to visit your site, the more add revenue you make.
It's not too hard to figure this out: flame wars generate money.
@Greg7388
Well... Why not do exactly what Apple attempted to do: Ignore It.
At least in your case there probably won't be any serious repercussions for your hiding the (proven) issue, unlike Apple who have now been publicly exposed for their dubious engineering decision, and are being made to face the issue.
@Greg7388 And I hate when people act like it doesn't exist just because they don't see it. I suppose the US doesn't have an obesity problem because you're skinny?
If you have a fully functional phone, more power to you. Just don't act like the problem doesn't exist when it does.
@Greg7388 You are so incredibly narrow minded i'd be amazed if you could put on your underpants
@DaHarder Plenty of people have not reported the issue. Like 99.45%. That's millions of users compared to less than 20 thousand.
@Greg7388 So, you went from "this is a made up issue because hey! I don't have it" to "eh, maybe only around 20,000 people experience this issue". Stop. Just stop.
@Greg7388
Wait... Wait... Don't Tell Me -
You got those figures right from www.apple.com (or one of its minion web sites).
How Shocking!
@Greg7388 thats because you're probably right handed
@Greg7388
>>>>God I hate stupidity.
You shouldn't hate yourself.
>>>>People have been complaining about the iPhone reception problem without ever using one.
I'm so tired of hearing about this made up problem.
So you are saying that the 17k+ (pretty large number) people who have officially complained about their iPhone 4 reception/call drop issues to Apple according to Apple own unsubstantiated figures (The real figure would be much larger) are just made up.
@DarthGeek 17,000 < 2,983,000
And those .55% of people probably saw the news, then called and complained, or they saw the news, saw their reception drop a singly bar when death gripped (all phones do) and then complained.
The news said: your iPhone will drop bars. The truth is *all phones do*. They made the problem seem iPhone specific, and that's where the trouble began.
How are you basing your opinions on what .55% of people have said, when 99.45% are saying something different?
@Greg7388 I have issues with this part of your statement: "The news said: your iPhone will drop bars. The truth is *all phones do*. They made the problem seem iPhone specific, and that's where the trouble began.
How are you basing your opinions on what .55% of people have said, when 99.45% are saying something different?"
Well, what was made public is that it is a *valid*, *provable* and *repeatable* problem. Consumer's Reports, an independent, non-biased testing firm has reproduced the 'touch-of-death' effect - and they test multiples of anything they test - so, if they can NOT reccommend a device because of a reproducable effect - the problem is existant and repeatable.
It is also proven that most other phones need to have a goodly portion of the device *smothered* to drop signal. THis is because the antenna is covered and/or coated to reduce the galvonic skin response that bared metal will produce. Bared metal that the iP4 *has*.
I'm glad that you're in the 99.45%, but if it happens 22,000 times already...
...it needs a real fix. Not a rubber diaper and a 'poo, poo' from your patron deity.
@deedeedee
Enjoy your cell phone condom :-)
@SoulWeaponry
Which is quite fitting for one with thought processes so horribly 'messy and jumbled' - LOL!
@deedeedee Yeah, that's a cool story you got there bro. Now what about the part where selling a lot doesn't mean something is actually a good product (in this case a phone)?
k.
Just keeps getting better and better! Hah!
this is getting silly. and is it me, but is this a really weak counter? "can make calls without a bulky jacket"? i personally liked the first attack better... "hold the phone any way you want".
@uberbadgadget
After September 30th, this will have a lot more meaning when iPhone 4 customers then on will have to PAY for a cell phone jacket to compensate for Apple's screw up.
The Ad should say:
Droid X: Good thing you don't need a jacket because it's bulky as fuck without one.
or
Droid X: Dropping WIFI connection faster than Google can release a new Droid phone
or
Droid X: Our Android OS is so fucking ugly we had to cover it with our own "skin".....which won't let you upgrade your software for months if needed.
HA
@StickyD
The patch released before launch day fixed the WiFi issue, the phone fits better in a pocket than a Blackberry, and it makes great phone calls instead of sacrificing a protected antenna from conduction just to make the phone thinner and sleeker, unlike some other popular phones....
@StickyD
Wow - That answers any questions as to whether you're an advertising professional, because that's just awful in every conceivable way - YIKES!
Dare you try again?
@DaHarder
That's my point. I can sit here all day and think of one-line jabs at every device currently on the market. Motorola is just mad that the antennagate issue can be duplicated on it's Droid X. What's you come-back on the issue with not being about to update "skinned" devices for months at a time due to the device maker having to update it's skin before you can implement any updates? Explain that one, chap. I have buddies that have had to wait 3 and 4 months to upgrade their phones. That's why the Android OS is so fragmented and all over the place. My iPhone 4 works perfectly and takes better HD video and pics than the Droid X, so I'm good. Oh, and I'm consistently getting 4.5 to 5 mbps down and 1.2 mbps up on AT&T's HSUPA+ network here in Charlotte. I know you're not getting those speeds. My neighbor has a Droid X and we ran the test together. He barely got over 2 mbps when we ran the tests at the same time. I'm just taking jabs at the Droid X b/c everyone and their brother is looking for a chance to dethrown Apple and talk shit. It's still the smartphone to beat.
@StickyD
Antennuation is not the same as calls and data dropping from cellular antennas completely detuning by skin conduction, dumbass.
@StickyD
Funny...because my best friend who has all but the 3GS, got it at launch after 11 hours standing in 100 degree heat outside an Apple Store in Phoenix. Phone had bad reception and dropped multiple calls mid conversation since day one in good reception areas. He bought a bumper before the press conference and STILL the damn thing did not work which was important as he was one the phone with his vet about his sick dog and with his wife who was out of town working on a trial with a law firm she works with. Even the bumper never worked and had to return it. My point? Even Engadget tried but could not get the calls or antennuation to occur and the WiFi claim was patched at launch with an update. As for download speeds, yes, at the moment AT&T is a bit faster but coverage is AWFUL for 3G. I live in Charlotte and the moment I left town to travel while I was with AT&T, it went directly to EDGE. Reliability AS A PHONE first and being able to get 3G coverage over a large area are very important. The thing that pisses people off in regards to other phone carriers and Apple, btw, is that Apple is trying to mislead the public that antennuation which occurs on all phones is the same as Apple's unique detuning issue. I would not take an iPhone 4 for free if offered as I need RELIABILITY.
@VAVA Mk 2 thank you!
@StickyD Explain to us just how this issue is being duplicated when you cant touch the antenna in the Droid x. You do realize there is a difference between shielding the antenna and touching it right.
@VAVA Mk 2 Hmmm the motherfucking 100 degrees might affect it... It's the best phone. But it's not, wait no phone can stand that kind of hear
@legionssolution
He was in Phoenix at launch day visiting his wife while she was out of town with her law firm for several weeks working on a trial. He drove from LA where they reside. Try again.
It's funny. Still won't sell more than the iPhone. But I guess they'll keep taking shots at each other.
