New Kindles now available for pre-order
You might've heard about a new Kindle model or two this evening, and good news if they tickled your fancy -- they're now on Amazon and available for pre-order. Both the WiFi-only and WiFi / 3G models are shipping August 27th, the former in graphite and the latter in graphite and white options. Search your pocketbook, if you know it to be coveted.

Wake me up when they become free. Still won't want one, but wake me anyway.
@16915V
I'm sure one of your parents will come down to the basement and wake you up before then.
@admlshake ...Or maybe they've given up on him too..
@16915V
why would we wake you? for more dumb comments?
no thanks
@admlshake Something tell me, even his parents put him into oblivion. Hence the basement.
@admlshake
Lol, I love these types of comments on Engadget :D
@16915V
It's not color. You're right .. until they make a color touchscreen version, it's pretty much useless even if it's free.
This is getting close to impulse buying territory.
@JS Absolutely! Color is essential to the reading experience. Why, I can't count the number of books I own that are printed in purple ink on orange pages.
Come on, Amazon! Wake up to what readers really need!
@admlshake That's great, but kindle should have been like this from the beginning.... I mean paying more than 300 bucks in older generations is just not what people are willing to do..
@Billy
Looks like the UK isn't getting completely shafted on this one! Hurray! at £109, I might have to go for this one. Beats that kobo thing anyway
@Billy
Well they sold plenty of Kindles before. First gen technology is generally more expensive, and then comes down as the race to get more customers heat up.
@Billy
Except that people were clearly happy to do it, considering how successful the damn things were. I paid $259 for my K2i and was happy to do it.
This is the perfect time to release one at such a low price. Many people own Kindles, but the important part is that most people know somebody who does own one. Many people I know have expressed interest in getting one, and now that it's under $150, I expect sales are going to go nuts. Hell, I'm thinking about getting a second one. It's like in the early days when the iPod was super expensive. Everybody knew somebody who had one, but it wasn't until the $250 mini came out that it really reached the mass market.
Keep on trucking Amazon. Readers who have fallen in love with the Kindle are rooting for you.

Apple has some 'splaining to do. Why does adding a 3G radio add $129 to the price of an iPad, yet the Kindle adds the radio and lifetime service for just $50?
Applenomics?
If the notion ink adam doesn't come out soon, i might have to get one of these things
Awesome device!
@NuklearPanda
sob, i just got a nook two days ago... this sucks...
It's not perfect but I like what Amazon is doing. Still waiting on that magic $99.99 pricepoint.
@Slvrgun
But $139 is now at least a fairly sane price.
@Slvrgun
I can't complain. The Kindle 2 was running $359 a little over a year ago.
@Gregorian
Here in Austraila it would be double that without sneezing, that's if it was sold here.
@Tentcityanthem
Really, double? Are you buying them on the black market? If you order them from Amazon (crazy idea, I know) you'll get shipping to Australia for $US20 and get it at exactly the same price as everyone else. If you convert it into the Australian Peso, it costs about 10 to 15% more numerically + about $AUD25 shipping.
For non Australian readers, this guy is what people mean when they say "drongo".
@nutjob did you really type in Australian PESO?!
Because a real book... just isn't worth it anymore.
@BobVeeTech
Sometimes when I'm out somewhere reading my kindle someone will say something to the effect that they prefer "real books". I like to ask those people about any good books they've read lately they just turn red and get flustered because they haven't read anything in the last year.
@iperson This is so TRUE!
@iperson I'm reading Gravity's Rainbow right now, I try not to be one of those guys.
@BobVeeTech It is imho. Love that it has a weight on it, I love turning each page, that anticipation what will happen next when you feel one page from the top and you slowly slide your finger on it's side to turn it. Sounds like porn. LOL And I love the smell of paper. :D
@iperson
Maybe they are reading books those erotic novels, which they don't feel confortable to talk about (that would also explain why they prefer real books - stains on a kindle may be hard to clean up ;) )
I'm tempted to get one but I would probably read like 2 books and never touch the thing again. If it gets down to $99 I'll take that chance though
B&N needs to come out with a larger Nook so that the Kindle DX will come down in price.
@Meekermoloko or come up with cheaper nook .
@fevoss
Or both ....
A larger, cheaper Nook. 8vD
I preordered the wifi version. I am excited!
@BobStewart
oh and wifi tether on my droid will fix the issued of not always being near an access point.
@BobStewart
We won't know if Droid tether will be compatible with the Kindle until launch date. So far, Nook isn't because it does not support ad -hoc.
@alecX
You are completely right I totally forgot about that.... well regardless I still am around wifi enough to purchase any books I may want. Its still more convenient than driving my suv to a book store 20min away.
Can I read .doc word files on that thing? Any conversion process?
@nbedros It doesn't read it natively but you should be able to convert it. To convert it I'd recommend you use caliber which is an open source piece of software for managing your ebook library
http://calibre-ebook.com/
@Hylic
Thanks!
@nbedros
Amazon has a conversion service. They'll convert files and send them to your Kindle for $0.15 per meg, or to your email address for free. Calibre is helpful but not strictly necessary.
i wish that they have model without WiFi and they drop the price more , coz all i need is a USB cable to transfer my huge collection of torrented eBooks.
@fevoss I bet you still use a corded phone at home, don't you?
Now which color (White or Graphite) would make the contrast pop out more? Would the font compliment the Graphite, or contrast better against the white?
I think that'd be a deciding factor for color choice.
@TsaoKun
Although now that I think of it, I'm sure it will depend on how black the Graphite one is exactly. Maybe making it not a deep black was a smart choice if the font is actually a richer black so it seems even darker! For if it was actually actual black then the fonts would seem faded or dull.
@TsaoKun
The darker case improves apparent screen contrast.
@TsaoKun
You can check it out at your local target once it's available not just preorder. At mine they have one out so that you can see the display and the form factor.
great price i might now buy one for my sister
You know what I love about the kindle? That it doesn't close like a normal book. I love that I never have to hold the book open with two hands or awkwardly with one hand. I can rest the device on a table and not have to hold it open with one hand and eat with my other. If I want to flip a page I just press a button with my pinky instead of using all of my fried-chicken-grease filled fingers. It makes reading SO much easier.
@herbie00 Don't forget that its light as hell. The iPad is uncomftorably heavy.
