Porsche 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid headed for production
What once seemed to simply be a ridiculously extravagant concept for a plug-in hybrid has now become a ridiculously extravagant reality -- Porsche has just announced that it's putting the 918 Spyder into production. First unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, the car (in concept form, at least) packs a 500-horsepower V8 and a pair of 109-horsepower electric motors that should let you get about 78 miles per gallon, or a total of 16 miles of driving straight from the lithium-ion battery back. The cost? That hasn't been officially announced yet, but estimates peg it around the $650,000 mark. Don't worry, though -- it'll be eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit. Head on past the break for the full (but brief) press release.
Green Light for Series Development of the 918 Spyder
Stuttgart. In its session today, the Supervisory Board of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, gave the green light for series development of the Porsche 918 Spyder. Reflecting the overwhelming response from the public and customers to the Concept Study, the Supervisory Board gave Porsche's Board of Management the mission to develop a production model based on the car already presented. This concept version of an ultra-high-performance mid-engined sports car with plug-in hybrid technology made its debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show and at Auto China in Bejing, hitting the headlines worldwide.
Michael Macht, President and Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG: "Production of the 918 Spyder in a limited series proves that we are taking the right approach with Porsche Intelligent Performance featuring the combination of supreme performance and efficient drivetrain concepts. We will develop the 918 Spyder in Weissach and assemble it in Zuffenhausen. This is also a very important commitment to Germany as a manufacturing base."
The Concept Study of the 918 Spyder allows CO2 emissions of just 70 g/km, corresponding to fuel consumption of 3.0 litre/100 km (94.1 mpg imp) in the NEDC, on the one hand, and the performance of a super-sports car, on the other. This extremely efficient drivetrain technology then forms a symbiosis in the 918 Spyder with truly outstanding design and high-tech motorsport achievements. Further product details of the 918 Spyder will be disclosed in the months to come.

Seriously Porsche?! What a waste of money, you have to really think about it. Be wise people.
@1016JP1 you only live once
@rmbrown09 Yeah I know, but I think of better cats to blow my money on.
rmbrown09 Yeah I know, but I think of better cars to blow my money on., correction.
This is for the rich so don't fret over it guys. If I had a mil, probably would not waste it on this. If I had 10 mil, probably would not use up a tenth of my fortune on a car (unless I was a hip-hop artist that is). If I had 50 mil, maybe.
@iPhone 4
Instead you can contribute to Steve Jobs $4.5 billion net worth, who will buy one of these on a whim and the next day inadvertently lose control and run into a few dozen Foxconn employees pushing their bicycles up a steep hill.
@Ducman69
You don't "push" bicycles. You, at the very least, "walk" them.
@bravokiloromeo
They are very heavy Chinese bicycles, made entirely out of lead, and laden with the weight of all their crushed dreams and ambitions.
$65,000? That's not too ex... oh, wait. Never mind.
Okay Chevy, screw your volt.
I want to see the ZR1 packing some extra electric power.
That being said, I'd steal a bank to buy either of them.
The whole bank.
Don't forget it can get EITHER 78mpg OR go 0-60 in 3.5 seconds. Just not both at the same time. :-)
I could get 6 Roadsters with $650,000.
$650,000!?! That's pocket change!
ferrari for the win , take that you porsche fanboys !
but really , $650,000 ? you can buy a fighter jet for that, which in my book would be way more fun.
@IMarius
um... you probably mean 650 million?
@Psyclotr0n
no dude i am not taking about new jet or anything, more like a light fighter/jet trainer you can pick up a nice 80s or 90s Aero L-39 starting at $150,000, or an Aero L-59 $500,000+. Which like i said is about 100 times cooler then any car.
@IMarius
Yes, but you can't park it in front of your house! Unless your house is next to John Travolta's jet hanger...
Not that I can come close to ever affording one, but I'm just glad to see that they're going to produce what I believe is their best concept car ever!
How do we conserve resources when these things are made to be displayed in Jay Leno's garage than being used????
I'll just pay Leonardo DiCaprio to plant the idea in my head that I already own one of these. Then after a long dream I'll wake up satisfied.
Make it $70,000 and i'll put one on my driveway the day it comes out.
Thats 1 expensive *ussy Magnet!...im just sayin.
And to think he has set up his living room to display for all of his friends to sit in but not ride...
:P
What is that?
Is the driver holding a chipmunk in his mouth?
cool....but looks nothing close to $650,000

16 miles??
Just stick to sports cars Porsche, your suv is ugly as it reminds me of a pinto/gremlin much like others in that contoured class of pseudo-suv's, and lets not start with a 4-door sedan. The fugly meter is high on this hybrid also.
wow, porche has finally made another car that actually looks nice (after the carrera gt)
well, apart from the stupid rims
Other than providing an electric boost on top of the fuel engine, i see no use at all. Its not 'green' one bit driving around with a hundred kilograms of extra weight in the form of batteries and e-motors.
Engadget forgot to mention that this Porsche has a polution value of 70 gram CO2 per km. Thats 10 gram less then a Toyota Prius :)
froyo 2.2?
lol
@Scrubs
McSeal Sanmich...?
THAT is going in production ? damn that's ugly
well... that's a personal opinion :D
