The iPhone 4 may be launching on all the major Canadian carriers
tomorrow, but we're only just now starting to get the actual details on what they'll be offering. Rogers is the first out of the gate and, for a change, it looks like folks in the US may just be a tad jealous of their northern neighbors. It's not only offering the iPhone 4 for a further discounted price -- $159 for the 16GB and $269 for the 32GB on a three-year contract (for both new and existing customers eligible for a hardware upgrade) -- but it's bringing back its 6GB data plan for $30 a month as well. On top of that, Rogers is also offering a new iPad sharing plan that will let you share those 6GB between the two devices for an extra $20 a month. Still no official word from the other carriers, but
MobileSyrup has turned up a leak that suggests Bell will be offering 6GB for $30 as well, and iPad sharing for just $10 a month -- although that's yet to be confirmed. We'll keep you posted as more plans are announced.
Update: Bell just flipped the switch, and their numbers are largely the same with one notable exception -- iPad data sharing is an additional $10 a month instead of $20, just as had been rumored. Thanks, everyone!
@Andork throwing things through the air is for posers. sliding things on ice is for badasses.
@loteq
You guys think Baseball is the greatest sport on earth...your World series consists of only 1 international team (Toronto) which frankly you can have.
thing is the only reason were getting these deals is that there is finally some renewed competition in canada, something we havent had for 10 years. there are some small companies trying to break in and the big guys are trying to freeze them out with really low pricing for a couple of year to hurt them and keep them from becoming stronger companies financially, or possibly bankrupt them. Then they can go back to being monopolies or close to it again.
Telus and Bell are effectively the same wireless carrier now in all but brand as they use the same network. Rogers and Fido are the same network. Wind is new and Mobilecity is new. Hopefully they can make it long enough to give the big guys a run for their money.
Only issue is like Tmobile the new carriers are using different spectrum which wont allow 3g iphone access. :( So my choice is still simple.
Oh one more thing, to the a**hole canadians who are talking about our US friends wars and fat food, STFU. Its not neighborly to be a jackass.
Screw contracts and iPad sharing. What's more interesting is that in Canada (like many other civilized places) they are going to officially sell FACTORY UNLOCKED iphones.
i'm on Rogers and have bought 2 Android handsets cuz I'm an Android freak... and I wasn't given a $30 6gig option. What's the deal?? Why are iPhone 4 users given that plan and not the android customers?
@cocopuffz
Because apparently Rogers thinks the iPhone is the only true smartphone, and only an iPhone user is capable of using that much data. Basically, it's just because the iPhone is popular and Rogers knows they jack up their prices anyway, so getting more users on iPhone plans isn't bad for them.
Apple's Summer of Lies sales event continues!
At least Canada are getting it. Was supposed to neon sale here in New Zealand today and it's not happening. Vodafone have pulled all information from their website and stores turning people away this morning across the board.
No reason why and Vodafone did not even announce any price plans before the release.
Rumours of no phones in the country or that Vodafone NZ and Apple have had a falling it over pricing or service to it being available for other carriers.
Rumours of it being on sale on the apple store may not even happen and no news when the phone will be available if at all in NZ now.
Complete disaster.
Free with 2 year contract here in sweden
Bell is freakin amazing.
Just putting that out there.
I stood in the line for the Australian release of the iPhone.
It was released at midnight last night.
Well, I mean I was walking through Doncaster Westfield shopping centre at about 6pm, and saw the sign "Queue here for iPhone 4". There were a couple of guys there.... I think they just happened to be standing near to the sign.... and as a gesture, I stood in the queue for a few seconds and then walked off.
So now I can geekily say that I have queued for an iPhone. I just didn't hang around to actually get one.
Right.. But u get it UNLOCKED.. Something that we won't see here any time soon!!
I just spoke with Rogers. The data plan will be available to all rogers customers until September 30. They're not advertising it well... you have to talk to someone to get it.
Does anyone know if Telus will be matching the 6GB/$30 plan? I just called a Telus rep who didn't know anything about it, of course.
I wanted to get one tomorrow :(
All I have to say is "EFFING" awesome. Now u can hav that plan on my new iPhone while the wife gets the old one with the same plan. That way I will have 12 gb's of downloadage!!
$20 a MONTH to share data with an Ipad? For the privilege of using data I have already paid for? What a FREAKING RIP. Rogers, you SUCK!
My how the tables have turned, back in the day the American's had better iphone plans than the Canadians, thanks At&t
Man, I keep reading about all these plans - rogers, at&t, whatever, they're all the same, i.e. crap. Got my nexus one on windmobile - $35 unlimited data and I can hotspot my ipad to it with no worries or hassles. Gotta love it.
I'm still waiting for Dell Streak. I'm not down for 3 years of slavery.
Oh and speaking of Canadian iPhones, apparently (this needs to be verified by Engadget, that the new iPhone 4.0s have a mat finish around the edges to minimize signal loss.
If that's the case, it'll be awesome!!
this is a shocker..not!!!! WE are so backward when it comes to consumer electronics. Greed being the main cause. Unlocked as well as a better deal and more data what a concept. I wish we had a deal like that. I used AT&T's bandwidth tool and just doing the basics like sending emails with attachments and web surfing you need 5GB minimum. Even if Apple choose Verizon, they would just be bending over for another cellular Nazi. They should go to sprint which has better signal then AT&T and do the whole 4g hot spot thing like evo but iphone. Looks like its going to be android sprint 4g for me but i really want an iphone.
How much does the unlocked version cost in Canada? My sister lives there so I would like to get it from there if it's not that expensive...
By the way. It seems that the contract prices are huge at US&Canada. I live in Finland and we don't have that big pricing.
For example... I have a contract with local carrier in which I get uncapped and unlimited dataplan for 10 euros(13USD). Calling costs 7 cents per minute. Finland and it's carriers
I have been really bothered about the iPhone 4 launch in Canada with the well publicized "antennagate" saga. I was in the Rogers store yesterday to ask about upgrade eligibility and I got to play with 2 I iPhone 4 units which didn't seem to have the problem no matter how hard I held down the problem areas.
I have been to few stores today in Toronto, to check the antenna problem. After doing more than 2 minutes of "grip of death, with touch of death" I was not successful in bringing down the bars and successfully made phone calls.
Bell has the same deal. I got my iPhone today and got the same deal.
