EVO 4G's Android 2.2 update starts trickling out tomorrow, loads of new features and fixes in store? (update: official for August 3rd!)
We're not certain that this date is going to hold -- things like this have an uncanny tendency to slip at the last possible moment -- but we're at least hopeful to see some internal Sprint communication that they're trying to get the EVO 4G updated to Froyo as soon as tomorrow, July 30. It'd be the perfect way to kick off the weekend, wouldn't it? Turns out this is no mere 2.2 upgrade, though -- they're making a bunch of changes, too, including a host of new preloaded widgets, a flashlight mode for the camera's LED flash, light-assisted 720p video, and "improvement" to the quality of said video capture (something we specifically complained about in our review). Unfortunately, it looks like the hotspot hack might be sealed off with this update, but that really shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. As we said, we're hopefully the date sticks, because Sprint has identified it as a "high priority for competitive reasons" -- in other words, these guys must be feeling the Droid heat -- but the PR is apparently going to identify the week of August 1 as the first push, so the devices getting the OTA tomorrow might just be a very small, select group to ensure that nothing spectacularly bad happens. We're pulling for you, EVO owners.
Update: It's been made official! Notifications will go out starting August 3, but Sprint's doing something extremely cool by allowing eager users to opt-in early and grab the download at their choosing. Follow the break for the full press release.

Rave Reviews and Accolades for EVO
Check out what the top tech reviewers are saying about the device.
Walt Mossberg with the Wall Street Journal (sub. req.) says:
"The HTC EVO 4G, when used on Sprint's 4G network, offers the highest consistent downstream data speeds I have ever seen on a cellular network. It also has a number of other strong features: a front-facing camera for video chatting, and the ability to serve as a Wi-Fi hotspot (for an extra fee of $30 a month) that can simultaneously connect up to eight laptops or other devices to the Internet."
Chris Ziegler with Engadget says:
"Let us be crystal clear: we love this phone. Nay, we adore it. ...truly one of the best smartphones ever made..."
Sascha Segan with PC Magazine says:
"...if you live online, the EVO offers a big, beautiful, and powerful window to the world."
"The EVO starts with a world-class 3G smartphone and adds 4G as a "turbo boost" option. If you're an intensive Web user, you'll like it even without 4G."
Bonnie Cha with CNET says:
"Overall, the HTC Evo 4G is, hands-down, the best smartphone that Sprint has to offer and certainly ranks as one of the best Android phones on the market today."
Jessica Mintz with the Associated Press says:
"HTC's Evo 4G phone is fast, powerful and fun to use - as long as your heart isn't set on tapping into the speedier new network it was designed for."
Mark Spoonauer with Laptop Magazine says:
"Even if 4G hasn't yet reached your neck of the woods, the Evo 4G is a killer device thanks to its zippy processor, huge display, and an interface that makes Android more intuitive and user-friendly. While the keyboard could be better and the battery life longer, the Evo 4G richly deserves our Editors' Choice award. It's a no-brainer for Sprint customers, and a tempting choice for those on other carriers."
Matt Buchannan with Gizmodo says:
"It's actually staggering how different the experience is of using a phone that has over 4 inches of display, diagonally, versus more conventional screens, which run closer to 3.5 inches. Even when you're using the same OS at the same resolution-in this case, Android 2.1 with HTC's Sense UI at 800x480, seen on their last few Android phones.
It's kind of like when the jeans you've been wearing forever start to fit a little too snugly because you've been eating a little too well, and you finally cave and buy a bigger pair of jeans, there's a mindblowing moment when you close the button for the first time of how much freedom you suddenly have to breathe. So you kind of hyperventilate."
CNET, LAPTOP Magazine and eWeek gave HTC EVO 4G awards for Best of Show when it was announced at CTIA this spring. It was also recently cited on MobileTechReview's Best Smartphones and Best Touch Screen Phones lists.
Customer favorites on HTC EVO 4G's long list of features include the 4.3-inch screen, dual 8MP video camera capable of capturing HD quality and front-facing 1.3MP camera. They also appreciate the HDMI output jack making it simple to start a movie for your children in the backseat of the car with the phone and then connect to an HDTV to finish it when you arrive at home.2 Business customers highlight its super-fast 1GHz processor, simultaneous voice and data capability in 4G or Wi-Fi coverage areas enabling Web surfing and more during conversation, and built-in mobile hotspot for up to eight Wi-Fi enabled devices.3 For HTC EVO 4G images visit Sprint's image gallery.
Amazing at 3G, Unbelievable at 4G
Sprint is the first national carrier offering the next generation of broadband technology today in 43 markets. Sprint 4G delivers download speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G from any other wireless carrier4, giving HTC EVO 4G a faster data speeds than any U.S. wireless device available today. HTC EVO 4G's exciting features and applications are compelling and powerful in a 3G world, but they become even more amazing when experienced with 4G speeds.

@neeko18 Just update to the 2.2 DC rom - v3.5
@neeko18 wait, there's an htc app that easily puts you back to stock? go on...
Finally! I'm currently rooted on Stock Rom, but I'll definitely unroot to get this update OTA. Of course, I'll root 2.2 as soon as a solution is leaked. Seeing how those Hummingbird-powered Samsung phones fly has made me a little jealous!!! Hopefully Froyo will make my EVO snappier.
The iPone4 just got Curb Stomped!
Sweet! That would make it the First contract phone to get 2.2, right?
I'll be cycling for updates like mad later tonight.
If this turns out to be true, good job HTC and Sprint!
If this breaks my free wireless tether, I am not updating....
@theone87 ANY update Sprint/HTC puts out is going to break your root. Don't install it if you wanna keep root access.
Oh yes!!! OH yes!!! it's better then sex I tell ya.
@Spoony I have 2.2 on my Evo already. I'm also married to a really hott woman. Though 2.2 is nice, I wouldn't say it's better. What's better is having both :)
@DefPoet and @tranceformer978 :
I think its great that they list breaking functionality as a 'Fix'(es) ...
ie locking down the Wifi Hotspot that was a major feature of Froyo 2.2.
Wonder if thats why the Nexus 1 got pulled from google.com/phone?
Dude, I'm a soothsayer!!
I tweeted this this morning at about 7:00am PST
"Come on #HTC and/or #Sprint how about you finish FroYo and release it so our EVO's can really kick some #ATT butt?"
I'm very excited, this should be sweet.
@theaussiepunk
Ok your services will be needed for 3.0 in october.
@Seven2k
You can count on me, I'll be tweeting up a storm come Halloween
@theaussiepunk
"I'll be tweeting up a storm"
This is the most depressing thing I've ever read.
I was just thinking about rooting my phone after work today. Guess I'll wait and see how the update goes. Loving my EVO more and more every day!!!
@mrtito32 Don't install this update if you want free wifi tether, 30fps cap removed, apps like SetCPU, Titanium Backup or ShootMe. If you want any of that action go ahead and root and install one of the 2.2 roms. Any functionality that this update provides will find their way into the custom 2.2 roms while keeping root access for the 'good' stuff Sprint locks you out of.
@hodedofome ok, you just made me feel better about rooting and installing cyanogen6 this week, only to find out that 2.2 was coming to the evo now instead of christmas.
i should have thought about the fact that cyanogen will probably just add in all the good stuff in about 36 hours after its pushed out to customers.
@hodedofome That is a good point. I hate the first OTA update took away the ability to use ShootMe, and I would love to use the free wifi hotspot. I'm still probably going to consider rooting to get more customization, but I still want to see what the update will be like. What custom rom are you using?
@mrtito32 I'm using CM6, haven't tried the DamageControl v3.5 yet. I really don't miss Sense at all.
GREAT news for you EVO owners, hope it happens...........
now just waiting for the love for my Incredible
@Havoc70 Apparently Verizon's 3 flagship Droid phones are getting the update at the same time next Friday. :)
I for one will NOT be downloading this update. And all other rooted Evo users should do the same if they want to keep their root/wifi hotspot. Wait for the custom roms to get all the good functionality this update provides and put it on their 2.2 roms. If you really want 2.2 now just use the Cyanogenmod rom or the Damage Control v3.5 that's in beta...
*please* be true.
~happy Evo owner.
Evo + Froyo love made in heaven
Thank you HTC
Nice! It better not lock me out from turning off Sense Like the previous update did =P
I become 21 on august 2nd this is the best birthday present, thankyou sprint and htc.
- via fucking amazing htc evo 4g only at sprint bitches, fuck the iphone!
@andork had to iphone lamb how about u stfu and remove the n from ur name cause thats what u are a dork anda douche.
Oh how I've waited for some Froyo lovin'! Evo ftw!
I hope I get lucky and get it tomorrow!
@Hero24 that's what she said
Froyo OTA leaked already for the Droid Incredible on xda. It pretty much rocks :)
ahhhhhhh... HELLS YEAH!!!! i cant wait!!!!!!!!
Thanks to the guys at the dev community, I have been running the custom CyanogenMod 6 RC1 with the snap v3 custom kernel on my EVO and I couldnt be more happy.
Phone runs and performs extremely well. God knows what he will do with the new froyo build when it come out.
@bhagiratha Agreed. Once Froyo is released all the wonderful ROMs we know and love will be given a new breath of fresh air. Cyanogen and DC ROMs will be baller.
Froyo gonna put evo over the top forsure.
If this date holds up way to go sprint!
DDDDDDRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLL
Kick ASS. I will wait for the xda-dev teams to have a look at it before updating. A 2.2 ROM with working Sense will be very nice. I'm also impressed that HTC is listening to complaints about the video recording quality. It should be on-par with the iPhone 4 mainly because the sensor used is virtually identical besides the pixel and and size (physical sensor size is the same, less pixels on the iPhone 4 = bigger pixels = more sensitivity to low light). They just need to throw in h.264 compression and voila! Class 6 microSD cards can handle the bandwidth requirement, so that's not that big of a problem.
As far as Wireless Tether for Root Users being banned, I highly doubt that will be a problem that xda-dev developers can't solve. I'm just hoping they that ffolkes makes a working 2.2 kernel with his 30fps fix.
@liquidkernel Wouldn't it be better to hope that HTC got rid of the 30fps cap and figured out how to selectively turn off hdmi so it can break that cap?
I don't have any problems with my battery life. Currently I'm at 1d 16h 32m 14s from the last time I charged and I have over 50% battery left. Then again, it's not a new toy for me anymore, so I don't use it as much as I did when it was.
@OregonLAN I have incredibly good battery life with my phone. Over 1 day with a fair amount of usage. Even when at my desk I don't keep it charged and I still have 50% left towards the end of the day.
"Removal of keyboard dismiss button" FUCK THAT! I love my IME keyboard dismiss button. oh well, there are always fixes for that. That's the most beautiful thing about Android: if you don't like something, it can be changed!
Christmas in August
@Robhimself I wish there was confirmation of Froyo for the DROID Incredible. We can only hope that it's more than just the Desire and the EVO 4G. I've got an Incredible too. I couldn't wait for the Motorola DROID X. I'm fine with Sense though.
@trunksy I'm fairly positive the Incredible is good to go. There is a leaked ROM over at XDA in the Incredible section. Heard next week is when Verizon will making its announcement.
@Drizzle No luck today nor next week. Here's to hoping the week after?
HTC phones are garbage. You all are kidding yourselves.
@Dkgreen84
your FACE is garbage. AND it doesn't have half the gbz or wifiz.
@uhhmoney Your mom is garbage. Your phone is garbage and your entire life is garbage. Go fuck ur phone you dork
@Dkgreen84. Aren't you a happy person. Did HTC rape your mom while you watched or something
@hanshotfirst
