NZXT Phantom proves there's still life in chunky desktop towers
Did the recent reappearance of the Phantom console spark a tiny bit of nostalgia in you? If so, you'll be happy to hear that NZXT has picked up the moniker for its latest full tower chassis, and it's a fittingly futuristic-looking beast of burden. The angular steel enclosure provides tool-free access to five 5.25-inch drive bays plus the room to fit in 7 HDDs, 7 fans (up to a mammoth 230mm size), and a dual radiator within its walls. A top-mounted mesh window is accessorized with a slightly more useful array of USB, E-SATA and audio ports, while the innards are specifically designed to accommodate the bulkier graphics cards and CPU coolers out there. Sounds like a winner to us, and the $139.99 price seems about right for a flagship product that aims to tick all the boxes -- see the Phantom on video after the break and expect it to arrive, in all its glorious hues, this September.

Simple Installation – Phantom celebrates an array of innovative features designed to enhance every stage of the build. Meticulous wire management is easily attainable with large spacing behind the motherboard. The innovative all-new 5.25" screwless rails make installing and swapping HDDs an effortless process.
Additional Advanced Features – Further distinct features include an LED on/off button to control case lighting, rubber PSU and case feet to reduce vibration, easily removable front and top panels, and top mounted USB, Audio/Mic, and E-SATA ports.
"This is the most intelligent and elegantly designed chassis we've ever conceived" said Johnny Hou, Founder and Chief Designer at NZXT. "The profoundly unique contours combined with a highly functional, robust feature set solidifies Phantom as one of the most innovative case designs on the market."
NZXT reached out to the enthusiast community and enlisted the design input from the renowned modder of the L.O.S.I.A.S., Rogue, and OSIDIAS Projects, Craig Brugger, to aid in the creation of Phantom. "NZXT has shown that there are still companies willing to listen to the community, and that collaboration can lead to innovation and a product with few compromises," remarked Brugger.
Phantom will be available in early September in White, Red, and Black for the MSRP of $139.99. For more information visit http://www.nzxt.com/new/products/crafted_series/phantom.

Modular and Upgradeable. Can't beat it.
hell why choose i have a few laptops and desktops they both serve a purpose .. but if i had to chose desktop all the way !! power, storage, display and true customization
No thanks, I will stick with less tacky options like the CM 690 II
@Matt08642
CM 690 II brofist!
My Dell XPS 720s cool factor just went a peg lower. That black one looks pretty cool. As for the death of desktops, no way. What do they think, the whole world wants laptops, or worse yet, ipads? Give me a break engadget
This is definitely one of the nicest cases available in its price range! Too bad it's got so much plastic, but what else can I expect when the case is $140?
Got to love NZXT cases, got a Lexa Blackline myself
On topic, I LOVE this case so far! It's like a affordable version of the Corsair Obsidian line.
RE: Laptops and Desktops
This "debate" is mostly just blog-filler.
I like my computers to be light, portable, super highpowered, great for gaming, and support my video editing hobby.
My desktop was just built, so it has the big storage, big RAM, big processor, big screen, full tower, Win7 Ult., etc. It really sucks trying to use that thing in the car.
My netbook is a 10", very light, nice battery life, but it sucks and games and Premiere CS5 won't even run on it. Can't edit videos for crap.
This is all obviously a question of roles. The only place there the laptop/desktop argument is a legitimate thing is for the "daily driver" crowd that needs to store family photos and videos, and do email and Facebook. Laptops are getting affordable and capable enough to replace the desktop in this regard. I'm almost always recommend it with the screen sizes you can get now.
Wow, they COMPLETELY stole the outside look from Silverstone, it looks exactly like the Raven RV01.
Those things are *almost* not ugly.
Lose a few of the angles, and they're good.
I remember back in the days when computers were in a big metal box under your desk.... Desktops are dead!
Never mind how ugly it is. How uncomfortable would it be to put your feet on on that top? Mind you that doesnt work so well with a laptop either..
chunky desktop?
i just built a new full tower computer because it is FAR more cost efficient and powerful than any laptop.
what else would you use as a main computer?
I have a g73 Asus gaming laptop corei7 5870 mobile 8gb ram 1920 x 1080 screen, and a quad core overclocked x4 965 @4ghz 8gb ram, 5870, 2560 x 1600 monitor and I love both but the desktop graphics blow away my high end $1700 laptop. I really like the white phantom it will be my next case with a 128gb SSD drive as a boot drive. 600 gb velociraptor and 2tb of backup storage. The white reminds me of star wars stormtroopers look. $140 great price too +1 NZXT.
Yea you will never be able to replace a desktop PC for gaming/raw computing power. I love NZXT, i have a nzxt that im using right now! I do think mine is better looking though (zero 2)
Sweetness. I found me a new case
Do they unfold into a suit of Iron armor?
