PS3 and Bravia sales boost quarterly Sony profits above expectations
Earlier this summer, Sony closed another fiscal year of being in the red, but it's starting the 2010/11 ledger with its quill dipped firmly in the black inkwell. For the quarter ending June 30, the Japanese megacorp clocked up ¥25.7 billion ($293 million) in pure, unadulterated profit off the back of a ¥67 billion operating income. When you compare that to the performance this time last year, a ¥37 billion loss, you have to agree that the Stringer purse-tightening program seems to have delivered the desired effect. The primary drivers for the current resurgence are pinpointed as the PlayStation 3 and Bravia lines (frankly, we consider the two utterly inseparable), and Sony's feeling so buoyant about it all that it's revising its projection for the coming year's revenues upwards today. The good news is tempered, however, by the threat of a rising Yen, which has already claimed Nintendo's profits as its first victim.

Congratulations Sony!
@LloydStemple happy to see sony doing well
They need to improve sales in america, still lagging as hell
@trihy I had to get on a 2 week waiting list to get my Bravia TV due to demand and PS3 sales are up 40% over the previous year so far. Any "lag" is quickly dissipating, but we do appreciate the canned response.
There's like a billion different angles in that picture.
BTW, what is that game?
@TheSpoonyBard
fieldrunners!
over here - Europe - way more people that I know have PS3s than 360s.
360 is seen as old tech.
@ajwoodhouse Nope. Not the case in my europe. I dont care for either console but most people *I* know with a console, own a xbox.
@Bahumbug I agree with ajwoodhouse, it's either they have a ps3 or recently got one even though they have a 360
@ajwoodhouse
Same in my country. In about ten console owners, seven have a PS3.
@ajwoodhouse I wouldn't necesarily say that, they're all waiting for gran turismo 5..while watching days of thunder and talladega nights of bluray.
@ajwoodhouse
In superior England, most people own an Xbox. Even those who had a PS2. Brand allegiance isn't really that strong here.
@Akuma 10 friends who bought consoles, 10 own PS3s. 1 had a 360, one had a Wii.
@bitcloudrzr 10+1+1=12
@archkron
superior England my ass. You're still living in the middle ages worshiping a queen.
@archkron erm actually I am in the UK and way more of my friends have- and regularly use - PS3s than 360s. That doesn't mean they haven't bought 360s in the past but most who have tired of them and the numerous issues (RROD, the noise, the scratched disks) and either replaced them with PS3 or just don't power the thing on. Fact. Deal.
@Awall1987
Your math is correct but your logic sucks
10 "friends that bought consoles" means one or more of the friends may have more than one console.
So if all 10 have a ps3 and 2 or 1 have an additional or two systems, point still stands that 10 bought consoles.
Now you would not be incorrect had he said what the total number of consoles bought was.
There is your math lesson for the day.
Sony made a profit - mark the calendar!
@Bahumbug
They have been making profit from the beginning of the Sony brand, the only "pause" in that was when PS3 launched and they had to sell it at a loss for three years.
That's interesting, this year I bought my first PS3 and a Bravia HDTV, I guess that mean I'm trendy!
I wonder how many people bought bravias because of the ps3. I ironically ended up with mine.
Good for Sony, I wasn't a fan of the PS3 until my girlfriend brought it for me for our anniversary with Ratchet and Clank. Beautiful piece of hardware and fun to play with but its so hard to fully embrace it because I'm so rooted to my 360. Working on that because there exclusives I want to play on ps3 (uncharted, mod nation racers, resistance, killzone, etc)
I like sony for portable dvd players, cybershot cameras, and thin laptops. But I think their tvs aren't as good as they could make them. I saw a freakin awesom commercial for sony yesterday in a movie theatre.
I, like thousands of others, had their PS3 drive crap out on them. After that the USB ports started acting out. There are 56, 000 Google results for "broken PS3 drive." My thinking of Sony is good idea but it's gonna break on you.
@mrjonahemery A lot of people who get YLODs(I know now your issue), don't clean their systems. I vacuum out the ports to stop dust buildup which will eventually lead to problems over time.
@bitcloudrzr My original PS3's drive was acting up on me around March (just in time for God of War and Final Fantasy). Dusted it or and it started back working fine.
