Buying an iPhone 4 from a Canadian carrier? It's locked
We've been tipped this morning (and have now been able to confirm, thanks to our own Myriam Joire braving the lines) that if you buy an iPhone 4 in a Canadian carrier's store today, you leave with it locked to that carrier -- despite Apple's trumpeting that you can buy it SIM-free. It appears as though the activation process might be responsible for causing the carrier lock -- either that, or the carriers' subsidized models are shipped locked, unlike the full-price devices you can buy directly from Apple. Either way, it's a bummer, and it's certainly something to take into consideration before you buy.
[Thanks, Chris]
Update: We've now confirmed that the lock is happening at the time the phone is activated -- in other words, it begins life carrier-agnostic. Pretty wild stuff.
Update 2: Tipster Mika G. tells us that unlocked phones purchased directly from Apple do not lock upon carrier activation, which jibes with Apple's wording that "you can change carriers at any time." Carrier-purchased phones, however, definitely do lock.
[Thanks, Chris]

OK, it's business
Ok please confirm that if you by directly from Apple in Canada you truly get an unlock iPhone 4, cause that's what's it's truly saying. You get a reduce price when buying it in a carrier store but that surely means a lock unit. Please let us know that buying it strait from Apple Canada at the higher price we get an unlock unit. Thanks.
doesn't it say right in the screen grab that if you buy it at apple online retailer you can take it to any carrier you want? did anyone actually assume this would be different if you bought it at the actual carriers location? i don't think i've ever in my life seen at phone sold at a carrier that wasn't locked to that carrier. make no misunderstanding that im not saying you can't buy an unlocked phone from the manufacturer and take it to whatever carrier you want - even i have done that, but this hardly seems like news if you just pay attention.
when you buy an iphone in the States and pay the full price without AT&T's subsidy the phone is still locked. Doesn't seem right if you pay full price it should be unlocked.
I was going to upgrade for $159 but it seems that there's not enough phones available. I heard that most stores had only 5-10 units and that they were mostly taking names on lists. So I'll just wait, or get a 9700 Bold.
No f'ing sh*t... It says it right there on the apple store... You have to be a dumb f'ing *ss to think your gonna get it unlocked and subsidized from a carrier... As if AT&T has tought you nothing...
Look no matter what Apple does they will continue to dig their own grave. I mean it does have some great features but white or not the iPhone 4 has major design flaws. Design should never come before function and usability. Apple seems to have forgotten that.
I mean the iPhone 4 held the number one spot in the top ten ranking on pc world. Once Apple gave that press conference they took it down with out explanation. However, http://getyourgadgetsgoing.com/ took a look into it. The results are rather interesting.
Update 2 is a bit confusing or misleading (depending on if I understand it right).
If it says what I think it says, it means that if you buy a phone at the Apple Store it's unlocked, and if you buy a phone at a carrier it's locked?
What do you mean by "carrier purchased phones"?
That wording should mean one purchased from a carrier (ie. Rogers, Telus, etc) considering that Apple is not a "carrier".
In reality I think you should be saying, "Subsidized phones bought at the Apple Store are locked to your selected carrier at the time of activation, and unsubsidized phones are not locked to a carrier".
Is that correct? How much time can it take to word a sentence that's clear?
This is confusing. I've reserved an iphone 4 from Telus because I'm paying full price ($749) for it 'unlocked'. So even if it's carrier purchased at full price, I can't use it outside of Canada with another provider?
@jrfildes
