Canon EOS 60D turns up in DxO's optics modules roadmap
We've heard some Canon EOS 60D rumors before, but this one might just be the most convincing yet -- the as-yet-unannounced camera recently turned up in a roadmap that wasn't leaked but actually posted on the site of optics module manufacturer DxO. As you might have guessed, all mentions of the camera have now been removed from the site, but what was there before seemed to indicate that the 60D would be turning up in November or December (or, at least, DxO's modules supporting it would be). Of course, there's no details on the camera itself, but if that launch date is accurate it would line up nicely for an announcement at Photokina in September.

Interesting stuff for sure. Anxious to see what features it has. Also neat that it could possibly come with the 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro. I have been looking at purchasing that lens for some time now.
@mjkxxl This isn't a camera-lens kit list, but rather a list of body + lens combinations that DxO plans on supporting, with the date of support (I'm assuming) in the right-hand column.
Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to the 60D, even though I'm betting Canon will use it as yet another opportunity to confuse their product lines.
@DustinM The 60D should have been the 7D. The 7D name should have been reserved for full frame.
xD - full frame
xxD - semi-pro
xxx (revel) - consumer
The screwed it up. Also, do we really need a middle camera between the 7D and Revel T2i.
@DustinM
Ah well nvm then LOL. Will at least drop the 50D down in price, which is good for people looking for a good deal on a semi-pro DSLR.
@iPhone 4
So were does the 1d go? It's not full frame.
10D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D.. .. I"m sure a lot of people could have guessed a 60D is due to arrive sometime soon..
@ruby Well, this segment of their bodies actually went D30, D60, 10D... so it was kind of a jump. But yes, 60D is an obvious progression.
@ruby
The big deal is not "if" there will be a 60D, it's "when". It was rumored to release in early 2010, but that time has passed. There are plenty of people waiting to see what this camera will have to offer. The hype and rumors around the 60D in the Canon community are boiling over right now.
@ruby 70D also
They'll probably throw in the AF system from the 7D, seeing as that's where all new variants of Canon bodies have been going. I'm very much impressed with the 7D's AF, damn near never miss a focus and the AI Servo mode is amazingly fast on USM (and variants like HSM) lenses.
@liquidkernel
Doubtful, the 7D has a separate AF processor. This cost money for which the xxD line is not priced.
As a 50D user, it will be interesting to see how Canon squeezes this between the rebel series and the 7D. I'd bet 50D sales dropped a ton when the 7D came out, and I don't know of the series really needs continuing.
@dajimmers From what I heard, they were in a slightly different segment. When I went to Best Buy to play with the 7D prior to buying it (not at Best Buy, of course, they wanted too much and sold them w/ kit lens only), they said no one really buys the 7D because of the higher price point. The 50D is more popular at Best Buy, at least.
Canon will probably continue to attract people that do not want an entry level body, but can't really afford (or need) a pro body like the 1D series.
But you make a good point. The price difference is most likely minimal and I'm willing to bet the specs are similar as well. Maybe the 60D will have something extremely new?
I was just going to say, between the T2i and the 7D, I really don't see a need, or the space for a 60D. If it's going to be just a little better than the T2i, the buyer might as well go with the 7D for about $300 more.
@russelbutt You sure it's only $300? I'm looking at Amazon and the T2i is $899.95 w/ kit lens, whereas the 7D body only is $1560. The 50D and 60D would fit right between that.
@russelbutt
The price gap between the T2i and the 7D is way to big ($700+). I'm ready to upgrade from my Rebel 450D, but the 7D is too far out there in price for me. I like the T2i, but I'm holding out to see what the 60D will have.
@liquidkernel @R3DB71ND
Oops, my mistake. Maybe that was just wishful thinking on my part? :) I got the T1i at launch about a year ago. Been thinking about trading up to the T2i. I was just curious about the possible specs for the 60D. Some reviews already call the T2i the "Baby 7D". So the 60D, I'm assuming, will have relatively similar specs. I guess it'd be all about the "entry-level" vs "mid-level" preference.
So if I was planing on buying the Ti2, how much more would this be, and I don't see the 50D shooting video. Did I miss something?
@ckeboss
200-300ish more?
Of course, you've got other stuff to compare though:
Fps, size (rebels are damn small!), build quality and AF. Maybe some other stuff I can't remember. They'll both do video though, I assure you.
But it's not just about the price (if you can afford it). Remember, you'll probably have it for a year at the least, and the last thing you want is your hands cramping up using a rebel, or wishing you could take more shots per second.
Hope it helps!
what's a 60D? i thought that's what the 7D was. i'm so confused...
@MangoPants
the 7d was meant to be another segment of cameras. It wasn't a replacement for the 60d, hence why the 60d is coming out now. Maybe the next 7d, will be the 8d? I don't know.
Where is the 5D Mark III?? But if anything like the T2i, it will be in short supply, marked up, and won't be attainable until a year after its release.
@iPhone 4
and the 1DsMarkIV?

Slightly off-topic, but close enough! 7D is outside my price range, but the 50D is priced the same as a Nikon D90 here now, (body about half the price of the 7D).
Is the 50d better than the nikon? I'm quite likely to buy one of them. And I don't give a damn about video.
@Sarig For all intents and purposes, the two cameras are equivalent. Nikon and Canon have different philosophies on handling/ergonomics as well as unique lens collections. Both are excellent.
You need to ask yourself - which system do I want to use and invest in? Personally, I generally prefer Canon images and I like the selection of Canon lenses better - particularly for full frame, which I use (5d Mark II). Canon lenses are also, generally, more affordable. If you think you might one day decide to go full frame, I would strongly recommend Canon (my opinion).
Otherwise, there is no right or wrong answer here.
@rkd Cheers! I know Canon and Nikon are basically equivelant, I just wasn't sure if those two cameras were in the excact same category.
I handled a 50D today, there were a few quirks I wasn't entirely happy with, so I'll see how a D90 handles before making a choice!
