Google brings current weather conditions to Google Earth, confirms it is, indeed, still raining in Pittsburgh
Google's busted out Google Earth 5.2, and all you meteorology nuts are going to want to hear about this. The update includes current weather condition imaging such as rain and snow cover in the radar layar with the cloud cover view on. Now, we love seeing weather maps as much as the next guy, but we're also pretty bad at predicting what's going to happen next based on those images, so we'll just leave that to the pros for now. Either way, if you're lucky enough to live in the U.S. and some parts of Europe, that feature is currently available.

and i thought i was the only one who wanted this feature..
@aaroninde
Yes, you are. But I sure do appreciate new features, no matter what they are. Thanks Google!
@aaroninde isn't this the same as the weather feature in earth? Correct me if I'm wrong.
@aaroninde
id like to see this feature on Google Maps web page instead.
That's great. Only missing google to update the google earth for he iPhone. That app haven't seen an update since like 3-6 months ago.
@Flacofromny23
Buy an android phone
@loadoftoad Yes!! The phone for toddlers
@assb10yr - Actually I thought toddlers would be more attracted to the iphone as it's much more restricted than Android....
@Brokinarrow Yeah, how many times have I heard "My kid loves his iPhone or iPod Touch."
Does anyone know if this will be added to the Android version?
Why would I want to buy an android? So far android has nothing to offer me. Evo too big. Tmobile. U kidding me? Verizon yeah droid X too big. Increidible maybe but the os is not there yet n don't make me start with android apps.
Gotta love Google! This is sweet!
Does it have the ability to see change in recent time?
So - you could see the track of something over previous hour say - or 12 hours - or whatever?
Also, how real-time is the information?
@savagemike I'd say step outside when it rains, and then check Google Earth to see if it agrees with you.
As if the weather mattered, I don't leave Engadget long enough to go outside anyway.
@Squalor
Lol i could see that..
@Darkroom
You just got upranked for making me laugh. + 1
Google earth just keeps gettin better and better.
actually, i believe it's raining in baltimore.
Yeah, unfortunately it always rains in Pittsburgh. That's why we can't have nice things.
@thefox844 Well, I guess that's how the state of PA keeps itself balanced since we all know that it's always sunny in Philadelphia.
@thefox844 Maybe that's why the Pirates haven't had a winning season in 17 years. Maybe if PNC had a dome, things would turn around...
@Thedude983 I wouldn't recommend. We in Seattle have that (the one that can be moved on or off the stadium) and we still suck.
My Google Earth 5.1.3535.3218 has a Weather layer that shows this?
I thought google earth already had this feature?
@Nn4458
I've downloaded KML data from the NWS before for an overlay, so it isn't really new.
I'd really like to see lightning detection.
Please bring it to Japan :( I want my weather map .... It looks ... so ... magical
Now we will be able to confirm, for sure, that it is actually Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Cool little feature.
Check out weather underground. Very accurate, local weather and forecasting.
Cool, though I don't know that seeing it in 3D really does much better than seeing the current version's version of showing radar in a layer.
Now... if we start getting 3d cloud layers and rendered visibility... BOOM!
@0android0
3D of every raindrop so we can watch it as it happens...
Someone at the Weather Channel just puckered a little.
Great Service provided by Google. This will certainly help to whether forecast departments.
A static radar picture is of limited value; only when you can animate the last hour or so can you start to come up with some decent prediction.
It doesn't really matter though, because if you want to stay put in front of the computer, you'll read whatever map as to confirm that decision.
FINALLY!
Now, only if it were built in to google maps on the browser.
I will have you know that it is NOT raining here in Pittsburgh! It is 75 and sunny :-P
@jem141
Hell Yeah. Google is actually putting offices in at Bakery Square by Squirrel Hill. Snagging up all the CMU students before they head to Cali.
Or whatever, have a good day all.
oh man, is this also on the google earth for android?
I've been not caring about downloading google earth for my phone, cause I've got google maps, but this sounds like a good reason to grab it now.
@samagon0
just installed on android, not there yet.
It's hot in Topeka
@TommyFeds
Lemme google that.
It's always sunny in philidelphia
personally I would rather have it on google maps. but nice to see google is upping there game to keep people from going to Bing. But even with this feature i will still use Bing.
@kives343 Google maps doesnt need the weather to keep ahead of Bing. Bing maps are severely lacking as it is.
