Motorola Droid getting Android 2.2 next week (update)

We've just been dropped a brief note from Verizon that the original Droid will be getting the full Froyo treatment at some point next week. Considering the brevity of the announcement, it's entirely possible that this was thrown together in response to Sprint's EVO news -- but who cares? The more Android 2.2, the better, right? No official word on other Droid variants -- most of which are likely going to see Froyo updates soon -- but we'll be keeping our ears firmly planted to the ground.

@darthgault I recommend you lurk the modmymobile android forums and the CLIQ/Dext sub-forum. You can learn how to root your cliq there and download one of a few ROMs based on the leaked 2.1 cliq rom. It's not perfect as text notifications are still touch and go but everything else works great. They even got live wallpapers working on it.

Custom roms disable the update feature, you won't even get a notification.

@Shooter McGavin from what i know, this i'snt a custom rom, it is a working copy of the droid version of 2.2. If i get my hands on the manual update i can still update though right?

If you updated it normally then yes, if you had to root and install a rom (regardless of whether or not it's based on the official update) than probably not.

No good having 2,2 on your phone if you can't buy any bloody apps! It's two years after Android's launch and you still cannot sell or purchase Androids apps in most parts of the world. Too many fingers in too many pies, and Google's missing the small stuff. Remember Google Talk, whatever happened to that? Or the Google Voice desktop client? Why are they separate applications? Why would you develop two separate operating systems, and two stupidly separate App stores? Why would you give one of your freaking operating systems the exact same name as your company's browser? They are spread too bloody thin.

I am uploading a 720p vid to you tube now. Seems to work fine. The 720p worked after I updated the radio, prior to root and 2.2 flash.

3g hot spot works, I just turned it on. It did say that I have to have it as a Verizon service but hit ok anyway. My laptop is now connected. I have no idea if I pay for it or just activated paying for it-my plan is unlimited....anybody know?

@e9g2b3 The first few days this week, I couldn't find anyone online who had received the OTA. But now I'm starting to see blog posts and comments from people who have started getting their updates! I think it just takes a while for the update to get out. I haven't gotten mine yet, but hopefully will in the next few days!!
