Samsung confirms Galaxy S will get Froyo in September
Wondering when the Galaxy S will be getting its own cup full of Froyo, the 2.2 build that every Google handset is screaming for? Samsung promised that an update would be coming not long after release, and now courtesy of the company's official UK Twitter feed we know it's due in September. At least, Samsung is saying it's coming in September. That company has shattered our little hearts before with its broken promises, and we'd sure hate to see it happen again.

Great, by that time chocolate fudge will be out.
@bingster I hope chocolate fudge is a euphemism for Samsung Vibrant GPS fix .
Gingerbread? .... more like october or later
@bingster
Does anyone know if the Samsung Epic will ship with Froyo installed, or will we have to wait for Samsung to update it? Thanks.
@COOG There's a relatively easy fix already for the GPS issue: http://phandroid.com/2010/07/21/easy-fix-for-t-mobiles-samsung-vibrant-gps-issues/
@bingster
Or you just grab a leaked firmware and run it today. Running FroYo on my Galaxy S now, and it's working great.
@bingster
Or you could just get the leaked firmwares with froyo TODAY

@r34p3r
I believe it will ship WITHOUT 2.2 on it. I think I will wait until after this release to decide on changing devices.
@bingster
Chocolate Fudge?!?! What is that? Ginger Bread you mean? Ginger Bread will probably be released in October or November.
Anyway, my upgrade date is in November so the EVO or the Epic will be very hard to decide from. Hmmmm.... decisions decisions.
@The Dark Knight well if you like the idea of buying a 16 or 32gb microSD card and loading it up with 720p MKV files that can play back fluidly with hardware acceleration, The Galaxy S phone is your only choice. Evo cannot.
@Psilion what are your benchmarks? Specifically quadrant and linpack
Looks like the Froyo love is spreading..
I'm looking at you MOTO!
@Ravi Pretty sure the MotoDroid and Droid X will have it next Friday...
If their support for the Galaxy S will be anything like their support for the Omnia HD, this update will come in January and it will be the last update EVER.
@GGG
I think you don't know anything about the support of the Galaxy S...
Actually, in this month, 4/5 firmwares has been released (including beta roms with Froyo).
@Gnah
Good for you, enjoy the support while it lasts :)
(that is until their next important phone comes out)
@GGG
Samsung has made no promises that I'm aware of to produce further upgrades after 2.2, and I'd expect nothing less. By that time they will be set to release newer phones, to which their firmware support efforts will have to be redirected. Considering the short life cycle of smartphones, it seems that a phone becomes legacy after about a year and firmware support usually ends.
@Gnah 4/5 firmwares have not "been released", but have been leaked. The Samsung-Firmwares website (and all of its mutations) is not not official.
By the way, the Galaxy i7500 has been released with a buggy 1.5, and support stopped a few months back with a buggy 1.6 as the last official firmware. They say the hardware cannot support 2.1. As of now there is a 2.2 community rom alpha merged with CyanogenMods FroYo branch goodness, which is daily usable. Up your a**, Samsung.
@shalafi
leaked, released, whatever.
That shows us they're working on their product and tring to avoid their support in the past.
You're wrong, I alsa have an i7500 and it came with a rom with Android 2.1. Their last official firmware for the i7500 is out this month ...
@shalafi
My mistake , I also have the second galaxy i5700 (not i7500)
@GGG
I hope your wrong, my Cappy needs the Froyo love!!! Wouldnt suprise me other wise though.
@GGG
I will believe when I see it
@GGG "If their support for the Galaxy S will be anything like their support for the Omnia HD, this update will come in January and it will be the last update EVER"
I think they understand the game has changed, and by putting out a phone with the best chipset specs for any superphone besides Droid X, it appears they want to BE in the game, which also means not falling behind in updates. The Galaxy S already easily meets the minimum Gingerbread specs, and so worst case even if we don't get 3.0 from Samsung, we'll get it from somewhere.
Also, old news but Samsung is already working on a Galaxy S 2, which will supposedly have a 4.3" AMOLED screen. So it seems they really want to go head to head with Moto and HTC, and with that SAMOLED screen, god bless 'em they got a shot.
Yes yes yes!
Galaxy S will get froyo in september... no october... december? 2015.
@TwoADays It will still be long long before Apple will admit to any antenna issues on the iPhone 4.
Had froyo on n1 and I like it very much. Thinking of getting samsung vibrant so froyo would be nice =)
End of September? That's not too bad except that's kinda close to the Android 3.0 launch if the Gingerbread rumors pan out. As long as Samsung doesn't pull the plug on Galaxy S support the way they did with the Moment then I can dig it.
Samsung, you better follow through with your promise this time.
I don't like the way android phones receive updates. It is up to the manufacturer to make them available. WP7 updates will be available directly from MS irrespective of the device
@Anastasios Antonios Toulkeridis Yep that's what I hate about Android.
@Anastasios Antonios Toulkeridis Are you sure about that seeing as HTC have announced they WILL be modifying WP7 for Sens UIi, so you would still be held up by them. Others would follow suit I'm sure.
finally i hope they will fix GPS precision as on some places it throws me 12000km away :)... reproduced with html5 geolocation via exooc.com and also in google maps app...
btw u can get 2.2 test versions from http://samsung-firmware.webs.com/apps/blog/entries/show/4378338-update-galaxy-s-android-2-2-rom-
but read all comments first *J1 didnt contain yet full flash in web browser support
@SpaceQ have you tried the GPS fix and it didn't work? http://phandroid.com/2010/07/21/easy-fix-for-t-mobiles-samsung-vibrant-gps-issues/
@phi no it didnt :( it solved only getting agps data faster then with samsung's provided server
@SpaceQ
You can just install the FULL FLASH 10.1 APK for JP3 firmware of froyo 2.2 for samsung galaxy S

@easyThere thanx! I found also video review http://blog.gsmarena.com/samsung-galaxy-s-froyo-update-gets-a-new-version-weve-got-a-video-demo/
This is why, unless you have enough disposable income, buying an Android device before 3.0 is a bad idea... assuming 3.0 is when phone-specific customizations will be available from the Market and all Android devices will be upgradable, of course.
It's pathetic that phones are still shipping with 2.1. Also pathetic that it takes several months for Samsung to cook a 2.2 update when all 5 Galaxy S phones are so similar. It just shows how corporations feel about their commitment to the customer after selling him the device.
@Pickaxe
It mainly shows how samsung feels about supporting their devices. After the Omnia debacle I won't be getting a samsung device period. As much as people love to hate on Apple, an almost no questions asked year warranty and OS updates are the same day for everyone, even two year phones. Also 3 year old phones if you feel like JB. But I suppose you could also get the Android updates sooner if you wanted to root. Which is what I would do.
Nice, hopefully Samsung really took a page from other manufacturers as far as ongoing support for their devices is concerned. I want to believe they learned that this kind of consumer trust is important and has to be earned.
Otherwise, I was hoping we would get the update a bit sooner as in early August. But well, I'll be patient and look forward to the goods for now.
@firethorn
I was thinking the same. Samsung has just about bet the farm on the G-S class phones, put out a killer product. I can't see them giving up on it so soon.
I think Apple and Google need to join forces...Chocolate covered Snow Leopards for everyone!
No.
http://briefmobile.com/samsung-open-sources-captivates-code
Captivate's just got its open source code up. Now put mimocan's fix on it... froyo JIT compiler. And we'll be seeing 2800 Quadrant scores.
There's already many leaked Froyo roms available for Galaxy S.
Wow, Engadget made a news about the Samsung Galaxy! It's a miracle.
@keplenk these closet apple boys would be surprised how much of their readers have a galaxy s , or android...
i bought galaxy s and i am very happy with it.
The Galaxy S has it's own dedicated support team and phone number.
you think samsung support is bad try being stuck with an LG gw620 on android 1.5 and no update being released with LG ignoring everyone over it pfffffffffffffffffffft
so October for the Operator tested and issued versions...
