Stealth Computer debuts paperback-sized LPC-100 mini PC
Stealth Computer is certainly no stranger to tiny PCs, but it's now produced its smallest one to date in the form of the LPC-100. Measuring roughly the same size as a thick paperback novel, this one weighs in at just 1.2 pounds, and packs your choice of Core 2 Duo or Dual Core Celeron processors, an Intel GM45 mobile chipset with integrated graphics, up to 4GB of DDR3 memory, a max 500GB hard drive, and a rugged aluminum chassis that should hold up to life beyond the desktop. Unfortunately, all that doesn't exactly come cheap -- look for configurations to start at $995. Full press release after the break.

hmmm laptops could easily spread that size in there width how come there not so powerful.
or keep that thickness but laptop size you can get something really powerful
@racerbmw
yeah, just put a battery in the rest of the case and sorted, a battery (or batteries) that big would last long enough for those specs...
If the stealth computer was inside that pen, it would be newsworthy.
Decent specs for such a tiny computer. I would consider buying this for a HTPC. I wish the price wasn't so steep though.
@hshel90
Yeah but it lacks HDMI...
@archkron
And a decent GPU
Just get a Mac mini
@Maclovinit Although I'm reluctant to say it, one would be better off with a Mac mini...
@Firehazel
how did you get to that, sherlock?
@Firehazel
At first glance, yes, you would get a better value. But then you have to realize how small this computer is. It can fit into the palm of your hand comfortably, with the same power and nearly the same internals as a Mac Mini.
For industry, this is the perfect "console" PC. Hidden away doing its job.
@Mike10010100
Size - Stealth: 4.0" x 6.1" x 1.45", MacMini: 7.7" x 7.7" x 1.4"
CPU - Stealth: 2.53GHz C2duo, MacMini:2.66GHz C2Duo
Graphics - Stealth: Intel Mobile GM45 Express Chipset, MacMini: NVIDIA GeForce 320M/256MB
Ram - Stealth: up to 4GB MacMini: Up to 8GB
DVD - Stealth: none, MacMini: 8x slot-loading SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
@Firehazel
I think you're missing the point. None of the micro PC's out there even come close to how small this thing is.
Acer does make some pretty small micro PC's though, much tighter than Dell Zinos and Mac Minis. Just a question of preference. If you're purely making your decision on price, It'd be better to snag a refurbished Zino for $250 --most bang for the buck.
@NiftyPixel
Wow, thanks for posting that. This thing is even better than I realized. Half the size, 75% of the power. That is pretty damn amazing. And here I thought my Osborne 1 was tight!
@Mike10010100 I understand that. But in my mind, price comes before size...
configurations to start at $995. It would be really stealth brand because nobody would have it.
@kwonyu80 These are hot for embedded systems. Where you need to connect data collection and operator functions to a piece of shop machinery like a CNC or assembly line. You can pin these to the wall of a locked electrical cabinet and not worry about them running off.
Note they price nearly the same as a Mac Mini and have been about $1000 price for the last 5-8 years I've paid attention to them.
In other words, a PC version of the mac mini, same price, little worse in the hardware department but that's alright.
@rmbrown09
this looks like it'd be in an industrial environment. pretty sure the mac mini was never designed for that.
@rmbrown09
> In other words, a PC version of the mac mini
Yes. A "PC version of the Mac Mini" which itself is a Mac version of PCs you could get at least 5 years earlier.
Just what's needed - 2 serial ports and 2 ps2 ports
@Blythy
Millions of us still hang on to our 56K modems and Microsoft ball mouse.
@Blythy Most of these machines are designed for industrial use, where machines use serial to communicate.
@Blythy Actually this would be handy as some out of band console management for network gear. Serial is nearly ubiquitous for that. (as I eye my box full of light blue Cisco console cables...)
I thought this had a screen and battery! /end of flipping out
@Firehazel Lol for sure, cheaper and more power! Wow i never thought I'd say that about a Mac!!
With prices for decent HTPCs hovering at around $300-400, WTF?
And who in 2010 wants a box with two VGA ports for $1000? Oh why, Stealth, throw in an LPT while you're at it, rock and roll!
@robosexual they're not even VGA, they're good old fashion Serial D-Subs
It's got a DVI port on the other side, cos that's the most compact display connector on the market.
@robosexual They aren't VGA moron.
@Blythy @SarnGate
Aight, my bad. If anything, they'd be male vgas, that should have rang a bell. Should pay attention next time ;)
@robosexual
The pic in the article is the front view.
As I read the description I was like "ok... good... yes.... YES.... LOL, no thanks"
Erm... sorry to disappoint all the bashers, but this is mainly targeting industrial uses, not end consumers. This is no HTPC, and it does not seem like it was ever intended to be used as one.
Pretty cool thing though.
What no keyboard or mouse? F-A-I-L.
I can build the same with better specs for $58. Epic F-A-I-L.
/sarcasm
@Ed T
Soooo, you like it then?
It would be great for some things, but other things you would just want to get a full sized tower with twice the specs for the same price.
That thing probably gets so got inside it can power itself through the nuclear fission taking place
I'm liking this trend. What I want to see is content delivered to TV via IP. In 1080p. Most people do not use HTPC's because of the form factor, but mainly lack of content - for the common person. Most PC gamers I assume would like to use an HTPC if they could. I'm sure it consumes very little power too. Rather than buying Apple TV or products like that, I would opt for a product like this. Provided it had decent graphic performance too.
@Bervick
Using this with a wireless keyboard and mouse, or maybe even something like that Magic Trackpad for home entertainment would be cool in my book at least.
I think I've just found my car computer! This shoud fit neatly into the glove-box for easy access.
Any one that can reccomend a windows based "car-pc interface" if not any "car-pc interface" that it's truly awesome would be great^^
@Randomher0 That's exactly what I was thinking when I saw it, but the price and the HDD limit of 500gb (why is there a limit?) turned me off, I'd rather put a bigger, chraper unit in the trunk. Wireless mouse/keyboard, 3G tethered to an Android phone, and a long hdmi cable. Have you checked out mp3car? Lots of other choices although none this small
@atebit *cheaper unit! Wish we could edit posts. But just saw it uses laptop HDD which explains the 500gb limit. Still very expensive, and they should make a model with at least 1 less serial port and a few extra USBs in it's place
@atebit Actually I don't think the price is too bad but hey I live in Norway. Here everything is expensive :P
And it's size it's awesome, I have a MR2 Turbo (limited space in the car) and putting this in the back of the glove-box would be an ideal solution. Short cables to reach the dash, easy access etc
Oh and, when will you ever need more than 500 GB for your music and some films in your car? Unless you're gonna use it as a really portable office :P
@Randomher0 Did you see the Dell Inspiron Zino HD engadget just posted, starts at $230, has hdmi, 4 usb, 2 esata, optical drive, you can add options like wi/fi, blu ray. measures 7.8"x7.8"x3.5", not quite as small as this one but more bang for your buck. I checked out stealth computers website and that thing is tiny
