EVO 4G starts getting Android 2.2 update over the air
We've just gotten a deluge of tips that EVO 4Gs are starting to get blessed with the official update to Froyo -- a few hours prior to the promised August 3 rollout -- so if you've got one handy, you're going to want to start checking it right this second. Seriously, now that it's got a trick flashlight app included in ROM, what could you possibly be waiting for? On a related note, if you happened to apply that early update that HTC posted and pulled late last week, the company's working on a fix so that you aren't out of the over-the-air update loop and promises to "get back" in "the coming days."

Good Morning, Can someone please tell me how to update my evo.
Thanks!

@kevster1321
Thank you
OJ
Lucky Sods thought Vodafone had released 2.2 for the desire but turned out to be bloatware branding and apps you cant remove from what people are saying, might just root my desire now
Installed the update, everything is working as promised. My only issue is that USB tethering no longer works over 4g without using pdanet. It was working without a hitch before the update, and I wasn't paying extra for the wifi hotspot. I'm kind of pissed that this doesn't work now.
Who said that Flash would be awful and a battery drain so far OMFG! This update right here...this update right here...is called super-uber-slapyomama-intheface update
Anyone able to disable HTC Sense UI after updating to 2.2 on the EVO? I can't seem to disable it.
@mrsniffles06
I think they took out the Android launcher.
You can force stop it in Applications, but you'll need to have a 3rd party launcher like LauncherPro installed.
BTW, LauncherPro is awesome!
@SCB
Yeah LauncherPro is awesome but I was really hoping for the native Android Launcher UI.
Any ideas on how I can get my hands on it (android launcher UI)?
@mrsniffles06
I've yet to find the Android launcher.
@SCB
I am going to try to find an .apk of the android launcher or something. I am sooo over the glossy icons.
This is probably hard to do but I really don't want to root it.
To anyone who had the 2.1 flash app installed and upgraded to the official Froyo, you'll need to factory data reset your phone to get flash working properly without crashes if you were having issues with it.
I tried everything to avoid it, but nothing worked.
@SCB
Before you do this, try clearing the browser data.
I cleared the cache, but not the data.
It's worth a shot.
I've been checking for the update the past few days and it just keeps on saying "Checking..." everytime I click "Check Now". Even when the update is live, it still has this message and just stays stuck there. Does anyone else have this problem? It's not even giving me a notification that there is no update, or if there is one available. My Evo isn't rooted, and I never messed with it.
@cyco The update wasn't available until yesterday evening even though it was announced earlier in the week. Are you sure you are checking the right update? "Settings > System Update > HTC Software Update" It should now pop up and show the screen in the screenshot.
@aljlin I know, I checked late last night, and have checked the HTC Software Update at least 15 times just today. It just gets stuck at "Checking..." and gives me no indication if the update is there or not.
Updated to the Froyo build for my Evo. Like it, the web is definitely a lot faster, and like the flashlight. Haven't really tried anything. Some flash webpages didn't show properly, but that's ok. It loaded but didn't really get it working properly, not sure why but have to look a little more into it. The internet browser didn't really work right after the update and kept crashing, but after clearing the cache in the manage applications, the browser now works fine.
I have Froyo on my EVO! Now what?
Engadget, would you kindly do that article? I want to know what cool things I can do with this. How do I set up the iTunes streaming and OTA app installs that Google showed off? What apps are out there taking advantage of 2.2 feature?
@TheOtherJames
I believe those features are "coming in the future".
@TheOtherJames
Bro, google.
@beesneazy
Searching for those on google returns several pages of announcements about how they're coming in Froyo. That doesn't help.
@TheOtherJames
That's the answer.
Those features aren't out, from Google, unfortunately.
I think AppBrain Market created their own OTA app install, though.
There are also some 3rd party music streaming apps out there.
HomePipe, Orb, etc....
OK!
For those that are having BROWSER CRASH like I did.
You must system reset!
Menu> Settings> SD & phone storage> Factory data reset.
I had installed flash 10.1 on 2.1, and didn't uninstall when I updated to 2.2
You might wanna save your contacts?
You have gmail?
This will save your contacts to either SD or gmail via vcard.
People> Menu> Import/Export> Export to SD card.
Here you have the option of saving to gmail or SD.
Just repeat instructions to import your contacts back after reset.
I contacted HTC about this issue, it's not only that I installed Flash 10.1, she said a lot of people have been having this issue. It is because flash (lite) isn't being completely copied over and small traces are still found within internal memory.
Hope this helps!
Froyo all the wayy!
@brandon41214
Don't be trying to make your post bigger than mine to seem like you came up with that fix first. You're 3 hours late, buddy!!
:-)
I'm so glad to have a working browser now!
@SCB "I should have tried Menu, settings, applications, internet, clear data.
I think that clears anything browser related."
No, b-udd-y it doesn't clear it.
And I'm the only one that posted the correct fix.
Yeah, that might work for some with this issue, but for a lot, it doesn't.
Again, it's just a minor problem with the update not clearing all memory internals that have flash (lite) stored on them.
*Directly from HTC
=]
@brandon41214
I think you conveniently skipped this post. :-)
"To anyone who had the 2.1 flash app installed and upgraded to the official Froyo, you'll need to factory data reset your phone to get flash working properly without crashes if you were having issues with it.
I tried everything to avoid it, but nothing worked."
@SCB
Opps...
Well, I *conveniently* provided steps on how to do so.
I win, game over. [=
But, if clearing the cache works, try that first.
@brandon41214
Clearing my cache didn't work.
I should have tried Menu, settings, applications, internet, clear data.
I think that clears anything browser related.
It didn't take too long to set back up, though.
I have an easy question about this phone for ya, chose this post cause it's the most recent Droid X post I could find.
I'm on verge of picking this over the EVO because I can join family's network and pay $40 for phone/net - and I know it's only a 3G phone, however, once Verizon launches LTE, will that transparently change it self over on most phones from 3G to 4G? or will one have to wait for LTE/4G Phones to show up?
Tnx
@Shemploo
1st - This is not a Droid X post.
2nd - If the phone does not have LTE already built into it, you'll need a new phone when LTE rolls out.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
@SCB I got another one for you since you were kind enough to answer my post.
If one was to get EVO 4G and Sprint decides to bail on WiMAX, since we know they have LTE as fallback, would doing so kill off the 4G EVO? or would that auto convert to LTE from WiMAX?
@Shemploo
They would keep WiMax and LTE running side by side for awhile as to not upset the EVO owners. It doesn't matter to me as I usually upgrade when the newest phone comes out.
HTC may decide to produce a newer EVO 4G based on LTE.
More than lively, they'd create something bigger and better.
Ah ahhaha, my bad, I thought I had clicked a Droid X post.
Does anyone know if the EVO has been rooted on 2.2 yet? I was thinking about rooting it while I was on 2.1 but didn't. Now I wish that I had. Cyanogen looks real nice right about now.
Keyboard hide still there with .3 :D
I updated my evo late last night and my battery seemed to drain a lot faster today. Is anyone else having that problem?
Just a reminder for anyone that wants to watch Hulu on your now full Flash capable phone.

I am really enjoying the update on my evo, super quick, flashlight has 3 strength settings which is pretty trick. i am relatively sure they made the wi-fi meter display more accurately in relation to actual signal strength. internet seems a little faster. app sharing works and is cool.
@bschniz
I agree!!!
Ok ..... it's a little quicker. Battery life is'nt noticeably better. That's ok. Free tenthering has been disabled. No suprise there. So what else can I do with it?
Hold the presses! Just tried flash 10.1! Very cool! Steve jobs doesn't see this as value?!
fuck froyo i want gingerbread now! lol jkjk =P
good...good....
Engadget Show on Evo is the peas and carrots of the mobile world.
I still get a shutter when shooting 720p video, but everything else is fine..
