Former Microsoft VP brings Halo to the Atari 2600
Sometimes you just can't stop a man and his dream. In this case, the man is Ed Fries, the former vice president of Microsoft's game publishing division, and the dream is a version of Halo for the Atari 2600. That actually started out simply as a way for Fries to learn to program for the 2600, but quickly turned into a full-fledged, Adventure-style game that made its debut at this past weekend's Classic Gaming Expo -- in cartridge form, no less, and with a label that'd look at home in any shoebox full of 2600 carts (check it out after the break). Just as impressive as the game itself, however, is the story behind it. Here's just a sample:
Oh, did we mention you can play it right now? Hit up the source link below and prepare to forget that Halo Reach even exists.It's around this time that I discovered the existence of what I call "Magic Land". I was working on a bug with the boss encounter and accidentally found myself completely outside the 64 room map. I was wandering through memory that was never intended to be interpreted as part of the map but the code was doing the best it could to interpret what was being thrown at it. Strange, misshapen monsters attacked me in even stranger ways as I wandered through this bizarre land that I had unintentionally created. I left a bug or two in the final game to allow others to find and explore this strange landscape as I did.

Wow, I wonder how much that'll fetch on the market.
@Toyzer
Cool, but it seems like Ed has a bit of free time these days.
@Toyzer
I'm all for retro gaming but I think this is way too far back...
What's the FPM?
@Toyzer That is cool. Makes me wish I still had my Atari.
To keep with the 80's theme, Master Chief whips out a giant boombox when he beats a level, and Cortana has leg warmers, crimped hair and stone washed jeans.
@XciteMe
Try Bell-bottoms
@EGOvoruhk
decade correction fail.
@EGOvoruhk 80's, not 60's, WTF...
@EGOvoruhk
Bell bottoms was disco and 70s. 80s was all about the stone wash.
@EGOvoruhk
*parachute pants (think MC Hammer/Vanilla Ice)
#correction
@VAVA Mk 2
Correct, and guess what was also the '70s? The Atari 2600. It came out in '77
@EGOvoruhk ... and not hitting mainstream until '79 ish and by then the "cool" kids were getting the tight dark blue designer jeans like Jordache and the po' kids had to hold on to their bellbottoms or get them as hand-me-downs. Stonewash was mid-late eighties in my memory / hometown.... mmm Wranglers and Lee jeans
@Why should I have all the fun
Sigh. Hammer/Ice wore "Hammer Pants." "Parachute pants," skinny, made of nylon, thousands of sippers. Called parachute pants because of the nylon, not cause they (Hammer Pants) were puffy.
Damned kids! GOML!!
@mensrea
Yes, and the universe revolves around your town/city. Where I am from, MC Hammer wore 'MC Hammer pants' aka 'parachute pants'. The 'parachute pants' you are talking about are called 'swishies' where I am from.
Ah, the good old days...
Those one shot kills suck! even with the shield i died... oh well, it was a good time for a 2600 game!
@BobStewart
Yeah the one shot kills suck but it's pretty awesome... if only someone would bring this to Android, I'd love to be sitting around playing this on my phone.
@Kyouto it's flash dude, just play it.
strang,...
oh man i only have a pong unit that plugs into the tv!
@Flaystus Then use the Source!
@Lord Vader
You mean the Sauce?

Is anyone else bored of halo? It seems that they are a bit scared to tweak the formula incase it might upset the mainstream audience, so Reach is pretty much exactly the same. Halo 2 was good, Halo 3 was ok and ODST was crap. I know they invented some of the main aspects of the current FPS genre, but is also stuck in it's ways, when current FPS's have moved on.
Although I am happy they added sprint. I was fed up of the old "shot at first die first" thing they had going on, because I was unable to get away from enemy fire.
@DougieBear
Nope, its just you. And the whole "shoot at first, die first" thing is related to your skill level vs. your opponents skill level.
If everybody could run away from enemy fire, the game would be awful. One of the best parts of Halo (or any other FPS) is surprise attacking your enemy.
@DougieBear
Yes because the camping that goes on in the CoD games is so much more satisfying.

"USE WITH JOYSTICK CONTROLLER"... lol.
Bet this would be even better than Berzerk.
i'm so excited to set up my atari again.
oh who am I kidding, it's you guys. I never unplugged it :D
lol its obviously playable now because if he tried to sell it, microsoft would sue his pants off.
What are the controls for the flash version?
@Greg7388
Just use the arrow keys, Spacebar to shot once you get a gun (go up a screen to get gun on start)
A HALO ATARI GAME THAT IS BACKWARD COMPATIBILE WITH PC!!! LOL EPICC
how do i shoot?
@dedparrot
I don't know... I'm getting pwned (maybe it's a sign that I should work instead -- nahh).
@shishi from the start go up one screen and you will find the gun, space bar is how you shoot.
@shishi
It ain't just a bit hard. It's rock.
@BobStewart
Thank you
-shishi
NNNOOOOOOOO
-shishi's employer
Dump this in a New Mexico landfill
Everything feels right about this.
I'm 12 and wat is halo
@rmbrown09
Busted... If you were actually 12 you wouldn't be asking what HALO was, but what "Atari" and a "cartridge" is.
@rmbrown09 we have all heard the 12yo's calling people names on halo, so that joke doesn't work. I agree that it would be appropriate to ask what a cartridge is though.
Now let's bring robotron to the XBOX
@rollacosta
ha, screw that, what about ET, or Superman?
those were some tough games back in the day.
bring it to the SNES, is that possible?
@AiRSK SNES rocks! I'm all about donkey kong 2 with Diddy Kong!
I thought it was Ski Free - Halo edition for a moment..
That's awesome but that cartridge label is way too tame to be a 2600 cart label. All the cartridges I remember had about 80 things going on, like a guy jumping through a wall, a missile being fired overhead, a shark leaping, and some unrelated Aztec ruins in the background, all with the standard comic book equivalent of motion blur ) ) ) ) ) )
@CapnBry
Your cartridge sounds awesome!
