iOS 4.1 beta 3 breaks loose (update: Game Center killed on iPhone 3G and second gen iPod touches)
Member of the illustrious iPhone Developer Program? Well, aren't you special? So special, in fact, that you're once again being granted access to a highly-coveted iOS build that the unwashed commoners can't get: yet another beta of iOS 4.1. This time around, it's beta 3, suggesting that Apple might be getting close to having this thing ready for the mass market; after all, it's been just a week since beta 2, and Apple tends to accelerate the pace when a release is drawing near. Now, what about that iPad version?
Update: Looks like there's some bad news for legacy users in this update... namely the fact that Game Center compatibility for second gen iPod touches and the iPhone 3G has been dropped. Thanks for nothing, Apple!

Good thing there's no fragmentation with this platform...
@Chips08 ....Right. Only 3GS and iP4 get some features, others get left behind. iPhone 2G stayed at 3.1.3. Now Game Center cut off from iPhone 3G and 2nd Gen iPod Touch. Sure, no fragmentation...
@guitarkid
You obviously don't understand what gadget blogs describe as fragmentation of the android platform. Apple will not release a new device without the latest operating system installed. Period. You can't expect them to support older devices forever. Apple deciding not to ruin old hardware with new software is not the same kind of fragmentation as releasing a brand new android phone with 2.1, when 2.2 is already being shoved out to other devices. How rude is that?
The biggest problem with iOS is fragmentation. You have models that don't have gamecenter. Some models can't get the latest OS version. The latest hardware model has a different resolution. The iPad Hawaii different resolution and screen size. Developers just don't know what to target. This fragmentation is killing them. At least that's what the iFools say about Android.
@Blaque14K
As the owner of a iphone 4, N1, and a captivate I can tell you there is a difference with ios and android fragmentation. Most of what you said is legacy of devices that are 2 and 3 years old. The screen resolution is 2x the old phones so there is no problem there. I will give you the ipad thing, because devs do have to make apps to fit the screen. Then on the other hand my N1 has been on 2.2 since early July but my much newer captivate is on 2.1 and who knows when thats going to change. Other phones that are only months old will more then likely never see 2.2 like the aria. Also others come with old software like the backflip. Some come with 3.2, 3.5, 3.7, 4.0, 4.3, 5.0 screen sizes and there are more that i missed. So as you can see there is a difference but its not like there is no fragmentation in ios I'm not saying that, and I'm not saying android is a crap os. I love it, I love using it so much that I can't sell my N1 even thought I ca't use it now because of the mini sim card the iphone uses. But do not close your eyes to a problem with the android os because it is a problem and if there is one thing the closed garden of apple does very well its keep fragmentation to a minimum. P.S. Calling people names only makes you look childish and drops you down to the level of the same people you are making fun of. Be better then them.
@massalo A quick look at the Android SDK will show you that there's a built in system for handing different resolutions. If you use your layouts properly you don't have to worry about screen size all that much. It's not much different that designing a web site that works no matter the browser size. And a little knowledge of design patterns and Java classoading takes care of being able to code once for all versions. In other words there's no more a fragmentation problem with Android then there has ever been with any other type of software development. The only people complaining are lazy devs that just want to port code and iFools. I don't care for the lazy devs because with simple ports their apps don't take advantage of the deep features if the phone. See Facebook and its lack of contact integration. I call the iFools iFools because they are just that.....fools. They run around parroting crap they don't understand just because they heard Jobs or some iPhone blogger say it. Calling a spade a spade does not make you a spade.
People still use the 3G sled? Throw it at a wall and upgrade! That's like so last year haha (well 2 years but who's counting)
"Thanks for nothing, Apple."
Suddenly Apple isn't allowed to drop support for 2-year old technology. This coming from a tech blog that's looking for the latest and greatest on a daily basis.
So where's the Jailbreak to get iOS 4 and game center support on my iPod Touch?
yea because once that warranty is out why the hell not jailbreak the hell out of it? I AM RIGHT?!?
read the "i am i right?" part with a King Leonitus impersonation
They fu@@@d up the 3G with ios 4.
i'm gotta get this right now. on other matters i think the ipod touch 4 will come out in september like all other apple stuff has!
No game center for 3G or 2nd gen? Feels just like being denied by my home warranty company for a "covered" item.
i call this "firmware downgrade" LOL
I don't see why this should come as a surprise to anybody. The 3G runs old hardware. The updated software doesn't run so well on old hardware. This isn't about Apple forcing 3G owners to upgrade.
Not cool since Apple still sells the 2nd gen ipod touch, but my guess is not enough memory
Wow... And the engadget 'editors' prove once again to be pre-pubescent tools looking to rag on apple for not doing anything wrong... Big f-ing woop apple doesn't want 'game center' running on 2 year old hardware that will make it look bad. So, root your iPhone and you can play if you really want... Just like multitasking on the 3G.
Thanks for nothing Apple ¬_¬
