Android-based Archos 32 media player now available for pre-order
There's no actual pictures of this one just yet, but if you feel like taking a chance (or have faith in all things Archos) you can now pre-order the as-yet-unannounced Archos 32 media player from JR.com. This one is decidedly more portable than Archos' recent Android-based devices, and packs a 3.2-inch touchscreen, an 800MHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, 8GB of storage, WiFi, a built-in camera and microphone, and Android 2.1 for an OS (upgradeable to Android 2.2). Not too shabby for $149.99, and J&R will even knock of three bucks off the list price if you order now.
Update: Looks like the listing has now been pulled from J&R's site. We'll keep you posted if we hear anything more.

My biggest question is why?
I just got a Vibrant that does all this for the same price... you can do the iPhone for the same price and many other choices... yes you have to have a contract...
I just don't get having a device like this...
@hutch77
The same reason why people buy ipod touches : not everyone needs a phone , some may already have one or just not like paying thousands for the contract
@Accelerator Yup, I have an iPod touch, cause I don't need a phone or AT&T or a contract, I have a flip phone on verizon that I use every few years (exaggeration) but honestly, if you like android but don't need a smartphone, I wouldn't get an android media device, I would get an iPod touch, whether you don't like iPhone better than android, you can't deny that ios is absolutely perfect for an mp3 player, and obviously the iPhone is exactly the same, but if your gonna go for a phone and you prefer android then you would get android, if you just need a media device, there's nothing comparable to the iPod touch that runs android, android is meant for phones, not mp3 players
@hutch77 that's my problem. I just got a Vibrant and was a ass hair away from selling my Archos 5 Android Tablet on Craig'slist. The reason I decided to keep it is because of the A5's screen and codec support. I can't afford to drain my Vibrant battery watching movies or listening to music. I can use the Archos for that and the 5in screen is actually really good for ebook reading.
But this...well, the spec looks good enough with the price tag but I hope it has at least 256mbs of RAM hopefully 512. A capacitive screen would be nice too.
The hardware just sounds like a Pre without a keyboard that runs android :-/
@RatioTitle So really not much like a pre at all...
Wait they actually put an accelerometer in this one? Shocking!
3.2... video out? if not, no thnx
@AstroSeven
No HDMI-out, only composite-out.
The JR link is gone. Click on the ArchosFan link to get the specs.
Sounds like an US PMP war brewing
Archos 32 8GB = $149
iPod Touch 8GB = $199
Samsung YP-MB2 = $249
Personally, I'd rather have the hummingbird.
@PrepaidAndroidUSA IPod touch will soon have A4 retina display and dual cameras, and maybe gyroscope, and probably an entry model 64 gb at $299, pushing an 8 gb 3rd gen to $199? Or maybe the 32 gb 3rd gen, since there is no 8 gb 3rd gen (don't tell me that there is an 8 gb 3rd gen, there isn't, trust me)
I don't see it listed at J&R.
Dear Archos,
Take the iPad's dimensions, and merry an Android OS 2.2. I will buy.
Enjoy your day!
Well, it's the closest in hardware I can think of at the moment aside from the wireless-n, keyboard, and Android. We still don't know the resolution of the screen yet either.
Why wouldn't one just get a phone?
@zillah Can't afford smartphone data plans, locked into the phone contract you already have, etc.
i have no faith in anything called archos
archy
fcc has made the manual and lots of pictures available
looks real nice. And according to archosfan its multitouch arm8 based so that means it will be as responsive as most superphones. If it is just the initial salvo,the smallest, of a line of devices
archos could become the htc of android tablets.
