Jolicloud 1.0 now ready for your downloading delight on Windows or bootable USB
Tariq Krim's app-based cloud OS has been a long time coming, but it's finally freely available for download -- just grab a 16MB installer and you too can join the Jolicloud. We've been impressed more than once by the responsive netbook operating system which can boot in seconds flat, and now that it's got touchscreen support and a streamlined Windows dual-boot installer all for the bargain price of free, it's definitely worth a try. Give it a spin at our more coverage link, and let us know if it improves your life in any meaningful fashion. If your keyboard is inexorably intertwined with Windows, however, don't fret; a little penguin tells us a tablet PC version is also on the way.

Joli good, lads.
@paul34
This is going to be my new Quick access to the internet OS. When i dont feel like using windows.
@paul34
I would only disagree as it relates to the terms of service and privacy policy.
I only skimmed through, but I don't know how many French laws I may be breaking just by being an American. At least I'll be submitting to jurisdiction in Paris if I violate the ToS by using "excessive bandwidth"
@paul34 For whoever reads french JOLIcloud sounds extremely extremely gay. Yeah, hi oblivion, it doesn't makes it any less the truth.
Maybe it's just my netbook, but I own an HP mini 311 (w/ ion), and I've tried to install Jolilcloud multiple times. The only time the install was even successful was with 1.0. Although, it doesn't boot. The 311 is listed as compatible on their site. I wouldn't have tried to install it 4 times if I didn't REALLYYYY want to use it.Coming from a platform that's supposed to be fast and stable, it doesn't instill much confidence if a device listed as compatible doesn't work after four tries.
@WUSS If you're having issues, you should contact support. I'm always available to help out.
@ChuckBartowski Agreed, but there servers are getting slammed, and they want you to torrent a 700mb file haha.
@Grubasaurus Rex their*
@WUSS
That's odd, I've been running it on an HP Pavilion dv6000 since it was in its alpha state. No idea what could be going wrong, but I'd check the MD5SUM of what you downloaded and compare it with what the source gives you. If it matches then contact support if you haven't already.
This looks pretty damn cool, If i had an extra computer I'd tinker around with this...
I am gonna go on a guess and say it probably isn't as good as Windows 7 starter on my netbook (I have a background changer, ugg, which is lame they make you pay for Home Premium to get as a feature), but how does it compare to say, the crappy custom HP Linux fast web distro on my HP Mini? I might give it a whirl and see what it's like.
@VAVA Mk 2
I disagree, I think Windows on a tiny-screened netbook is rather unpleasant and cramped in terms of design.
Xda-devs members will soon quadboot the Touch HD.
@FutureFrankie
I am guessing the current three are MeeGo, Win Mobile 6.5, and Android 2.2?
@FutureFrankie
Touch HD2 that is (WM, Linux, Android, and this) when they come out with a tablet version that is. But then again if resistive displays are your thing you can always use the tried and true Touch Pro 2.
It's an awesome time to be a geek.
@VAVA Mk 2 win mo 6.5? Maybe webos or symbian
@FutureFrankie Android is Linux too.
Surprise!
um maemo 5 and meego ..much wow the similarities
still i'll stick to ubuntu and maemo 5
This would be epic on the HP Slate.
@Schmid7y It is epic on the joojoo.
Great hardware + crappy software --> great device all around.
Battery life still sucks compared to the iPad, but thats it.
you know, if i wasnt istkane, i would maistake this for another alex brand thing. its all ugly and web 3.0 esk, im really not into the blue bright on the gray backgrounf. i mean i think this is just another thing like apple boycotting flash gaie award. i mean. look, who needs windows anyways? now that theres JOLI-OS i mean jeeze!
@emopoops uhm...what
@emopoops So.....You have returned
@emopoops
I think you need a lesson or two in spelling and grammar. Back to grade 3 for you!
@emopoops
DOES NOT COMPUTE
Def be giving this a go on my netbook
Tried to activate java in JoliBeta. No Luck. Anyone succeed with this version?
@sonofzeus See the topic here: http://getsatisfaction.com/jolicloud/topics/does_jolicloud_some_with_java
Missing link? Seriously, can you not provide a link?
@iperson
bah, nevermind. found it in the "more coverage" area.
@iperson Here you go: http://www.jolicloud.com/
good to know its free!!!!
i was about to purchase Presto too. hehe
installed it a week or two ago and am friggen loving my netbook again...but wasn't that the whole point. Now i just need them to support netflix streaming and i'll be content
@NGnerd Actually, Netflix doesn't support Linux in general, to my knowledge. As soon as it does, this would be fantastic.
I'm prepping my Lenovo S10-3t for Jolicloud as I type... Hoping For The Best.
@DaHarder Same netbook I have. I'm working on the touchscreen support right now, but it's not finalized yet.
I installed Jolicloud on my girlfriend's netbook because Ubuntu didn't work with the GMA500 chip, but it is actually better than Ubuntu for her uses. Runs Ubuntu programs too. For new users on the fence deciding between Ubuntu and Jolicloud, don't hesitate to try out Jolicloud. I'm pretty sure you'll love it.
I really want a netbook now...
waiting for Chrome OS
@lopata
this will be the year of linux
My Hyperspace is pretty fast - must give this a try..
I just installed it on my D drive and i can't see it when I start my comp. Should I have installed on C where win7 is?
@YimYimYimi Erm. If you want to duel-boot, you'll have to install to C, yeah. If you want to use it exclusively, you'll have to boot up from a USB stick.
@YimYimYimi It's best to place it on the same partition if you're using express.
@YimYimYimi
If you're installing Jolicloud through Windows (probably using WUBI), then you should install it to a folder on your C drive. If you are installing from the Live CD/USB, then you should partition your primary drive and install it there.
Time to put my free IdeaPad to some use. Looks too good.
I just don't get the point of this OS. My netbook is more mobile then my other systems and therefore more likely to be out of a hotspot. I have a GSM USB stick but at $40 for 1Gb / month + extra overage I don't want to be using it constantly, but rather for times that I absolutely need it. Most of my 'data files' contain personal stuff and I would rather keep out of the cloud. Please enlighten me on what practical use this has.
@malibu1234 Actually, you can use the OS offline, as well.
@Zatara214 Actually I was looking at this and I will eat my words; it seems pretty good... I was just about to install it and switch from Windows XP... but then I googled on 'jolicloud battery life' and it scares me... Have they gotten any of these kinks worked out now? I haven't switched to windows 7 because it gets 10% less battery life then XP, I couldn't see myself switching to something that would eat up 40% more. One person said he only gets 5-6 hours on an Asus EEE with a 10-hour battery. That's nuts!
Battery life IS the reason why I bought a netbook, after all.
@malibu1234 It's improved, but it will definitely improve a lot more in the future. Right now it's about the same as Windows, but obviously the team plans to get it way beyond that.
