Keepin' it real fake: EVO 4G Shanzai edition
Shameless isn't even the word for it. While some companies try to get away with calling themselves Nokla or BlockBerry, these Chinese KIRFers have no qualms about copying HTC's EVO 4G in its entirety (externally, anyhow). Yes, that includes the Sprint insignia and the promise of 4G, both of which are, of course, amusingly untrue. Not only do you not get that supersonic WiMAX radio, you also miss out on Android, as this EVO rides the WinMo 6.5 gravy train. There's also no 8 megapixel camera, no 720p video, and no mini-HDMI output. But you still get a 4.3-inch, 800 x 480 screen and one of the best copy-and-paste KIRF jobs we've seen to date. See the back of this skilled imitator after the break.

Looks even better than the real thing!
@uckApple
That's a neutral compliment.
@uckApple
Is it me or iPhans are getting just as dull as the OS they praise.
@jahkamren
I hope this is available in the UK market.
@uckApple
On this episode of:
"When KIRF'ers Go Too Far"....
@r34p3r
"And stay tuned for next week as we show you how the chinese can make an iPhone 4 that is immune to death grips"
@vlad savov
Typo;
as this EVO ride the WinMo 6.5 gravy train.
@uckApple As the KIRF iPhone4?
@CrCross Just like everyone kept making jokes about the iPhone 4 antenna, there's always som corny joke that's been heard & said a million times. Get over it. He's a lame for saying it, just downrank and move on.
@Kangal But wouldn't that we a KIRFBF? Keeping It Real Fake, But Functional.
@Sherlock Holmes Dude You have authorities in those countries. My advice? Ship it!
SMH
Why would you replace a free operating system with one you have to pay for?
@ashwinkn
Specifically referring to this KIRF.
@ashwinkn That's exactly what I was thinking. I'd have though cheap Chinese phones and Android would have been natural partners, and would bring a great mobile OS to those who otherwise couldn't afford high-end superphones.
Step 2 is to stop knocking off other phones and design their own hardware, even if the result is fairly boring and generic. It'll at least give them some credibility.
@ashwinkn My guess is, they didn't license it anyways... so... ;)
@ashwinkn
Because the factory that was making the HD2 just tweaked the case and started pumping these out to pad their pockets. Simple.
@ashwinkn
If you wanted an Evo with Windows Mobile, wouldn't one opt for the HD2?
@aeth
Exactly, although you do lose 4G in the process.
@ashwinkn Because while there's no android licensing fee you have to spend quite a bit of money actually developing a working version for the hardware you want to put into your phone-that's why it takes a lot of work for companies to keep up with Android version updates-it's not plug and play.
If you're a huge company who plans on selling a million of a particular phone model it's not a big deal since you can dedicate a huge R&D budget to it (like HTC rolling out Froyo for the Evo super quickly, and with Sense), but if you're some shady knockoff outfit you probably don't have a great dev team so slapping Windows Mobile onto the phone is likely a lot easier.
Well at least it's in stock! I'll buy 9!!
at least I can use it in Europe not only as a music player
@4004 Yeah, but if you want something that looks like this and comes with WinMo 6.5, why not go straight to the HD2 anyway?
@firethorn yup, especially now, when they installed android on it
It must be great to live in China and be able to legally pirate anything
@Shalabi
Though in exchange you give up most of your human rights in the process. Legalized piracy vs freedom, quite a tough decision to make.
It is ShanZhai...
@Yangz Both spellings are commonly used.
@Richard Lai
shan zai is commonly used?
@Richard Lai: No, they're not. Shan Zai means nothing, it's like the KIRF of Shan Zhai.
@pouncep LOL, Shanzai is the KIRF of Shanzhai.
I think Engadget should start doing reviews and tear downs of these kirfs.
Well, if anyone is in the market for a WinMo 6.5 device, here its one hell of a phone!
Odd...the flash and speaker swapped spots...
@subzero1313
@subzero1313 And the kickstand looks like it's plastic.
Banzai edition coming soon
I'm half impressed, half disgusted.
thats impressive, HTC will sell it as a GSM Evo
isn't anything sacred in that country? they copy everything left and right! even the name of the company that they are ripping off. how the heck do you charge it? i do like the silver color tho at least. least its not half white lol
Amazingly they managed to perfectly recreate the Evo's pathetic battery life.
I wonder if it also has light leakage and and glass separation issues.
Would be sad if its build quality was better than HTC.
Still love my Evo, though.
I mean give these people credit for being hilarious. There are tons of knock offs of the the iTouch in stores like CVS and Walgreens. I just recently saw the fake version of the iPad in Bed Bath & Beyond. It's pretty damn funny to see stuff like this. Things like these are for people who can't afford the real thing. Of course it's not up to your standards, but if it's making any type of income, I'd make & sale it myself! Let's face it, the real things get more complaints than the fake!
Looks indeed MILES better than the fugly and faulty real thing. I guess the screen is firmly attached to this one?
Oh, sweet google drones, when will you ever learn?
Music to my ears when manufacturers produce fake phones looking better than the original.
"But the tree attracts the wind, it also escape the fate of the cottage."
This handset is same to same imitation of HTC EVO 4G but real is real so we can not enjoy most of the features of real handset in this one. This is the physical copy of the HTC EVO 4G but through technology and features point of view this handset is very behind from the real one.

it could just be the way the photo was taken, but usually, KIRF's are far uglier and cheaper looking than the original. This one is actually better looking. I actually like the way the original EVO looks too.
Man, now you've got Chinese companies copying Taiwanese companies.
Judging by the thickness and the size of the buttons and labels on the front, that is NOT a 4.3 inch screen. They obviously lied about several other things, so there's no reason to believe they wouldn't lie about the size too. I wouldn't buy that POS for more than $20. I can't believe so many people are wooed by the fact that it looks half decent in a tiny picture.
I'm confused. How the hell can they get away with this? I mean, should Sprint/HTC be suing the $hit out of these people? Or perhaps I am not educated enough in the ways/laws of the orient.
