Samsung's 24-inch SyncMaster FX2490HD monitor doubles as 1080p television
Samsung's updating its SyncMaster monitors today with the new premium LED backlit 90 series. Most notable is the 24-inch FX2490HD model with integrated TV tuner and inputs in the form of 2x HDMI, D-Sub, and even SCART for Europe -- sorry, no mention of DVI or DisplayPort that we can find. The panel itself sports a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution, 5ms response, 1,000:1 contrast, and 250 nits of brightness. Akihabara News adds a few details such as PiP support, a jack for viewing media direct from USB sticks, and support for 7.1 channel Dolby Digital and DTS audio. It should land in the US and Europe as early as this month for around $540.

Hi I visited your blog and is very good and it was worth making another blog because it can do something new and imaginative as you know
@Dr Sam Robbins: What?
@Dr Sam Robbins
Your comment made my day, good luck with your blog hope it does "something new and imaginative".
What kind of tuner? Most of Europe is on the digital bandwagon with DVB-T. Most of these "tuner-included" TVs are useless.
//My Apple Cinema display doubles as a paperweight. :(
@Wbuffet
DVB-T according to my googling.
@Wbuffet Samsung has always made specific versions of these monitors for each region so that the tuner is correct, as long as you buy the correct one it's fine.
Without DVI, it's not really a monitor in my eyes.
@DistantHere: It seems that DVI has quickly lost the DVI vs HDMI battle (if there ever was one)
@DistantHere
touché.
@216
what? DVI has not lost the battle with HDMI. That is why you see all graphics cards with DVI, but HDMI isn't a certainty.
And since monitors are primarily for PC's, what is the benefit of HDMI over DVI? I'm pretty sure you can't output your PC audio through your HDMI, but I may be wrong.
@dedparrot
You are wrong.
Also HDMI is HDMI (for the most part). DVI has many different types incompatible with each other.
@threpac Yeah and PC's come with DVI-I ports which are compatible with them all..
@DistantHere
DVI is good in all but it only carry Video will hdmi can also carry 7.1 audio. For example i have my xbox 360 hooked up my my monitor with hdmi, and i can now have analog audio come out of my monitor. I like hdmi better for that, but a DVI-I port can put out analog or digital video.
@threpac
Yep, every PC I've ever known outputs audio AND video over HDMI.
Just the fact that it appears to have a non-glare surface will certainly place me in line for one. If I can also watch conventional TV to boot, what’s not to like? Apple continues to ignore the customer’s requests for a non-glare display and longer cabling, so any monitor that appeals to what people want, will be better.
@Saber
I'm not so sure about the anti-glare. Samsung is notorious when it comes to glossy displays. It could be that the glass frame covers the whole screen :(
I'm perfectly happy with my HP ZR24w, big matte non-TN display. There's no tuner though, but I don't need one.
isp panel?
give it display port, and make it beautiful...like that its a no go!
@zerbmaster
It's not an IPS panel. Samsung uses *VA panels in their TV's, and TN & C-PVA panels in their monitors. Since this has a 1000:1 contrast ratio it's a TN.
Looks like their line of 3d hdtvs stands but I don't get why they moved away from 1920 x 1200 res. Your losing space with 1080p monitors and they seem cheap to me. I wish they would come out with a 30 inch 2560 x 1600 monitor led backlit this design that I would buy!
@Soldier1969
Definitely if someone came out with a decent 30" 2560 x 1600 led back lit monitor priced under a grand and I would get one in a second.
@Soldier1969
Quit hyping 1080p on computer monitor Engadget. It's crap and you know it.
@wicketr that's not entirely true. For 24" and greater, 1080 is crap, yes. But for 22" and below, it's pretty good. I've got 2 newish Dell 22" on my desk at work that are both now 1920x1080 and they're pretty sweet.
Way too expensive. I can get a regular 32" TV for that price, that can do at least all this one can.
@Khattab Contrast ratio listed is pretty bad on this one too. For that cost...its really a pretty bad deal, better specs all around with a TV.
not bad but to small your me they make an 32" to 37" version under $800 id be interested
@Bocefuss4500 can't....understand......
The given price might be the list price. Street price might be lower. I have a previous generation Samsung monitor/TV. The only difference is that it's a 16:10 screen so it either cuts the ends or shows letterboxing bars. This one looks nicer for other reasons.
This'll make a nice back room TV, what with the LED backlighting and all. Hmmm ...
16:9 is not a monitor, it is a TV. 1920x1200 is where work gets done.
@VIRGINA
I have the Samsung T260HD. It is a 26in widescreen and is the predecessor to this monitor. It has 1920x1200 resolution, DVI, and HD-tuner. It is nearly the perfect blend between computer monitor and TV.
It's sad to see Samsung remove features such as DVI and true monitor resolutions and still call this a PC monitor. It's just another HDTV. The Touch of Color line was the last line of monitors that Samsung made that could function as both a monitor and TV and do both *well*.
looks friken hot...definitely considering getting one with my next upgrade!
YET ANOTHER TREND-MONKEY 1080 POS!!!
does it matter whether its 1080p or 1200p as long as when its 1080p the 24 inch is 16:9 aspect ratio same as the resolution unlike what it would be in 24 inch 16:10 ratio. i love my t240 with 16:10 not gonna change
Is there a 23-26" monitor that has hdmi and pip? need one for my home office
@spider4re
The Dell U2410 (IPS Panel) is 24" and does pip but has no tuner, if that was a requirement.
@Reaper21x Thanks buddy
i want dts support for my samsung too!!! can't you just do it with a firmware update samsung? pleasee!!!
A 24" 1080P television with a TN panel (that's basically what this is) for $540??? I seriously hope that's the list price and not actual retail price. You can buy a 42" 1080P television with an IPS panel for that kind of money these days. Samsung must be smoking crack.
You can preorder it on amazon.de for 399,-€. Will ship on August 16th.
I'll just keep my Samsung T240.
Production shifted away from 16:10 some time ago to 16:9 because it allows manufacturers to use the same lines and means of production they use for televisions. You might decry 16:9 now, but most likely your next monitor will be 16:9 because that is simply all there will be.
Such is life.
The big question is if it's a quality display lie S-PVA or, even better, IPS or is it another crappy TN screen? Then, the other question is how many bits is the color? I think Apple displays use 10 bit? Some other high-end displays use 12 bit color. This eliminates banding and improves color accuracy. Most TN monitors use 6 bit color and have horrible banding and not so good color accuracy. I'll never purchase a TN monitor.
BTW, I also hate the move to 16x9 resolution. I have 1920x1200 and I won't go lower unless I go for a laptop.
The lack of Display port is the most significant annoying thing ever.
AMD comes out with 6 screen graphics cards, something that sounds so supremely awesome that people would rush out to buy some more monitors, and yet some consortium somewhere is conspiring to keep display port off of monitors. There is no way any cable connector and associated chips to decrypt or decode costs more than 25$.
Yet another example of a poor consortium created economic habitat for loads of business fail fun.
This has made my decision a lot harder. Get the SM2333HD, or spend more and get this??
I'm more than happy with my HP ZR24w. 1920x1200, beautiful IPS screen at a reasonable price.
That's one ugly stand! Do not want.
Copy and paste from earlier:

1920x1080? That has only 90% as many pixels as my laptop, in 156% as much space.
Call me when we can get one of these in a desktop case:

This is one sexy bit**!!
If only they can come up with a 27 incher,
that'll make my day!!
