Sharp to launch glasses-free 3D smartphone with 3D camera globally this year
Can't say we didn't see this coming. After wooing us with a number of glasses-free 3D displays -- including the one that gives Nintendo 3DS its magic -- and 3D HD cameras for mobile devices, the company has finally laid down the gauntlet. It's promising to release a smartphone with such an autostereoscopic screen and 3D camera, just like we always wanted, before New Year's Day 2011. It certainly wouldn't be the first 3D phone in the market -- Hitachi touted one early last year for Japanese carrier KDDI, and NTT docomo has had a prototype 3D display -- but a Sharp spokeswoman said that this 3D smartphone would be going international. The more the merrier, we say. Now, how about some more details and a pretty picture or two, eh Sharp?

Now that's really pushing 3d in new directions!!
@DaHarder
... holograms can't be too far off.
@DaHarder I just don't know what use I'd have for a 3D phone...Does it play games or what? There isn't enough content yet for it.
@DaHarder Yeah, what we really need is them pushing this overdone gimmick into yet another medium. Wake me up when a hologram can give me a lap dance. :P
@DaHarder we can skip nintendo 3ds. i need 3d porn on my windows mobile 7
@DaHarder Am I the only one who doesn't want 3D on my phone?
@dkratter14
No, you're not alone. Don't want 3D on my phone. Someone send me a memo when we have holograms like in Star Wars but with color.
@DaHarder
I Completely agree. The form of 3D WITHOUT glasses will get ready to take off. I know the technology needs to deal around the 'viewing angles' but when they perfect that, I may be interested.
@dkratter14 i don't see a use for it, unless its going to have some cool 3D unique to itself UI that give me headaches. hopefully the phone has a built in AED for when i pass out
@DaHarder
Its so advanced that the image even extends outside the bezel!
@Arayta
take an iphone for, put it on your lap, let it due it's stuff, I mean overheating and you'll see how you dance.
/joke
@DaHarder But holograms still only work in monochrome. Lord Vader often brings this issue up.
@DaHarder
The distance between the two cameras in that package/module doesn't seem adequate.
@DaHarder As long as the image is SHARP
Handheld is where 3D will truly flourish. Keyword? Glasses-free.
@nicholas1987ucsb
Content:
All the 3D movies
3D OS elements
The 3D images you'll take with your 3D camera
A few good 3D games
@nicholas1987ucsb
haha seeing as it hasn't been made yet, it's a bit obvious theres not content for it.
@Plazmic Flame
Then turn the 3D off.
@DaHarder Glasses free, that's what I'm talking about, everyone I know mocked 3d tvs because of the glasses, and the fact the screen is only between 40 and 70 inches, vs a movie theater @like 2000 inches, but eliminating the glasses is step one, kudos
@nicholas1987ucsb Why would there be content for something that doesn't exist?
@DaHarder
wow,
@Arayta
or a hologram that tell you that you're it's only hope?
Man!!!!! And I couldn't wait...instead I bought a samsung 3dtv and hand over my left arm just for a couple pairs of 3dglasses. :(
@Artist701
You gave your left arm just for the glasses... does that mean you gave the rest of your family for the 3D TV?
Cool, but I doubt it will do well. :(
@IAmAlive yeah my biggest question is WHY? I mean what will a 3d smartphone give you over a regular one?
@tu eres estupido
What did colour give us over monochrome?
@tu eres estupido
STFU. 3D on handheld devices solve many of the problems plaguing 3DTVs.
The "what will it give us" question has been answered before. Answer: Something closer to reality on your screen; similar to what Color and HD have given us.
@TareG what functionality will it give you over a 2d screen besides being eye candy? I personally think its cool but what uses will it have?
Man! And I couldn't wait! Ended up buying a 3dtv & my left arm for 3dglasses. :(
@Artist701 You can say that again.
@lakersin2025
he did
i hope samsung follows sharp but with a 3D S-AMOLED screen for the Galaxy S 2.
Looks like I finally got some interesting phone to look forward too. Do hope it will be a Keitai design. And the thing better have a Aquos Shot brand on it.
it probably got the technology from nintendo.
@techlord Nintendo got their parallax idea from sharp.
@techlord
or the otherway round, it was rumored Nintendo was going to use Sharp's 3D screens but I think they are just using their own proprietary ones
yes nintendo are using tech that is or close to the same thing as sharp glasses free 3d stuff, its most likely the same screen that are going in the 3ds.
Not that is a bad thing , but at least the 3ds there will be good games and controls whats the point of it on a phone ?, oh well as long as there is an off button like on the 3ds then i guess its a cool gimmick.
Hopefully there is a way to switch the 3D on and off cause 3D at all times seems like it would not only eat battery but give u a headache
So this could be interesting, right?
Probably Android? Or is that just my subconscious guessing what I want?
1.5GHz
4.3 inch screen
3D 8MP Camera
Front Facing Camera
Android Gingerbread
*Insert other bells and whistles here*
@TheHypnotist And that is my dream phone. Great job!
@TheHypnotist Didn't realize Andoird 3.0 meant 3D :P Seriously though, 3D on a phone...what a waste..
Neat
This changes everything, again
This 3D nonsense needs to end. It's redonkulous.
@Needsahaircut The only reason I didn't leave half-way in Avatar was the 3D. If implementet right, most new tech is awesome enough.
methinks WP7 will be the OS here.
This might be the future of smart phones.
Cool. Now I can have my girlfriend screaming at me in 3D-Facetime... Just wonderful.
Does Sharp develop screen for HTC? Cause I saw a rumor a while back that stated that HTC would come out with an Android late this year that had screen technology that no one has seen before.
