Verizon chief tapped for CES 2011 keynote
When you keynote one of the biggest consumer electronics trade shows of the year, it's usually a Big Deal -- and you're also plainly aware that when you step up on that stage, your audience (read: us) is fully expecting you to unveil something new and awesome. On that note, we're intrigued to hear that Verizon Communications' Ivan Seidenberg has been selected to do the honors for the opening address at CES 2011 next January. The press release -- which you can find after the break -- says that Seidenberg will "highlight [the] company's vision for its LTE 4G wireless technology," so we'd expect those LTE handsets expected early next year to factor prominently into the equation; of course, we wouldn't be surprised to see a tablet or two, either. In the wake of Ballmer's milquetoast showing at the 2010 show, the pressure's definitely on to deliver a rousing address. Oh, and Ivan? If Ralph de la Vega says "break a leg," he might mean it quite literally, so watch your step.

And I'm sure he's gonna tout all those Droids that have flew off the shelves.
with android now outpacing iphone by almost 2:1 in daily new activations, maybe apple finally gave in and is going big expensive red. OTOH does verizon really need that aggravation of dealing with apple when droid is flying off the shelves thanks to big red's excellent marketing. a year ago an iphone on red might have been a big deal but by january gingerbread will be out to mention phones even more powerful than current gen spec kings like the Galaxy S, so an iphone announcement would seen like a step backward for red at that point.
@MisterWarmth Honestly, I don't even think that carriers are as interested in the iPhone as they would have been even a year ago and I just don't see the likes of Verizon willing to shell out the kind of cash AT&T would have paid for iPhone exclusivity when they've essentially branded Android as a Verizon brand with their Droid commercials. Really its Apple that needs the other carriers, not the other way around.
@Dank Dillweed
Didnt the WSJ journal peg January as the month for the VZW iPhone?
@Dank Dillweed: That's ok, because iPhone sales will go back up once they announce the Verizon version at CES 2011.
@Elranzer
Hey, I am a fan of Android, but seriously, I wasn't saying it as a fanboy, or being snarky. I just think he's going to be tooting his company's own horn
@MisterWarmth Well I hope Android outpaces iPhone nearly 2:1 jesus android is on every network and iPhone is only on AT&T so it's about time they start selling those hunks of shit
As long as he doesn't mention anything that even sounds like Storm 3, he'll do fine.
He's going to unveil Verizon's newest plan to rape consumers everywhere. In reality, who cares
I would switch right there and then if he lowers the monthly bills we all get by 10$
@mandarin so you mean lower it to like $130 then..
He is going to announce that they will also allow you to drop calls with a single touch while using the Iphone4 on their network
@silaslang Wouldn't work, signals too strong :P
Fios to the brain to bypass TV , PC.
I would settle for fios to my house. Not anytime soon according to local people. Trucks laying fiber seem to have packed up and left.
I got excited for a sec because I though this meant Apple's keynote.
New 4G LTE Android-powered phones/tablets...what else !
iPhone 4G for Verizon announcement?
@TeddyNYC why should they bother when they've got a winner with droid on their own terms? verizon will not out up with all they stipulations they've gotten away with with At&t, who basically bent over and let apple play phone company.
@TeddyNYC
As much as I dislike Apple products...
One can dream.
Very Very VERY Interested in this keynote. Verizon must have something they think is pretty big.
If Apple goes to Verizon......
Not only will everyone signing up go for it, you are going to see a million Droids go as well. There was actually a conservative estimate that said over 9 million people would switch from other carriers, and around another 10 -20 million already on Verizon that would switch.
It would put the iPhone into #1 in about a month.
It surely wont be an announcement of an old iPhone 4g. If anything it could be a new iphone on LTE.
I'm sure he will announce the first LTE phone or phones
@H2B
There is no iPhone 4g, that would be a big announcement for an iPhone 4g on Verizon, it def won't be a iPhone4
Come on, as if Steve's going to let some suit from Verizon announce a new LTE iPhone. Stan 'cue card' Sigman was bad enough, he won't be making that mistake again.
@Unverified User
I agree but if its iPhone LTE, believe me Steve will announce it before ces is upon us. Didn't the att ceo get the keynote for the iphone at some point?
I think it was bloomberg, I know not a big difference,
This sound like to me iPhone 4g, step back or not, its would be a huge deal with heavy press coverage
@deedeedee
Wow, you're extra trollish today. Nobody cares about the iPhone like they used to. The day of the small screen has come and gone...
I'm going to do my deedeedee impression...
Lol.. 3.5" screen fail...
drops calls when touched.. fail...
losing marketshare left and right... fail.
horribile notification system.. fail
agree? :)
@Dorf lol you said it, it must be true.
iphone 4g wooooooo! im still keeping my droid lol
Chris, did you just use the word 'milquetoast' in a blog post?
Love it.
@deedeedee Talk about being behind...it took 3 generations before the iphone could video and 4 generations before the user could change the wallpaper on it lol.
Yes its going to happen this time and "Ivan the Terrible" (because of a past history of blatant phone gimping) will announce it. Watch! But at this point does anyone really care? Many Verizon types that love the network and would have purchased an iPhone are all Droid'ed up and anyone that wanted an iPhone but had no network loyalty switched and got one.
Also doubt there will be much churn impact to AT&T because it is not as if their going to lose idevices completely. Mater of fact they will most likely get new devices first since GSM is what the majority of global operators are on and apple thinks globally. AT&T pretty much squeezed the fruit dry.
Could also see them running ads touting why their iPhone is better than Verizon's, iPhone by highlighting its simultaneous voice and data difference as well as the thousands of apps that rely on it. There will be signs to watch as the lead up to CES 2011 approaches (i.e. Apple buying (Qualcomm CDMA chips in bulk ;^/...
