Apple iPod touch LCD screen with front-facing camera slot spied?
You may or may not be aware, but Apple has a penchant for announcing new iPods in early September, as it has for years. With just over four weeks to go before the most likely (but nigh confirmed) press event week is upon us, expect the rumor mill to ratchet up appropriately. Here's one care of Mac Rumors; the gang's been sent some pictures from parts supplier iPhonerevivers that allegedly show a new iPod touch LCD screen And sure enough, in place of an earpiece is a slot perfectly suited for that oft-rumored (and possibly email-based) front-facing camera. It's not the first time we've seen this piece -- the resemblance to early July's leak doesn't escape us -- but these photos are decidedly fresh and from a different source. Mounting evidence... or are we all just being had? Wouldn't surprise us if we found out for sure before ides of September.

Yawn....
I hope they get rid of the ugly shiny back on the iPod touch. I hope they put the silver matte back that the iPad has on the iPod touch. Is it too much to ask for?
@feelinmycrotch The aluminum is what your thinking of. That would make it a complete iPad clone.
I remember when everyone wanted Apple to make a touchscreen iPod. They make the iphone first. Then the make the ipod touch but theres no interest and its called a rip-off of an iphone because the iphone came first? Doesnt make sense.
Really*shocked* i did not know this was going to happen.
Seeing as it has to be on WiFi to work, why wouldn't Apple put FaceTime on the Touch?
They'll just tag the caller ID to Email accounts instead of phone numbers.
Perfect sell through for the Touch, and a perfect intro for the iPad with FaceTime...
I don't know if I should get an iPhone 4 or the next gen iPod touch.
Just in time! My 1st gen iPod touch battery lasts about 45 minutes. Hopefully the base model is bigger than 8GB
If there is a God, there will be a second-gen Zune HD with a larger, higher res display, compatibility with WP7 apps, and cameras that support Video Kinect (as well as Skype/FaceTime/Qik/etc.)
and this is a rumor? We know they are gonna do it! stop with the speculation already! They have to make the iPod Touch compatible with FaceTime because of the wi-fi only requirement.
Why again is this exciting? Prediction: it will be like an iPhone 4, but without the ability to make phone calls. So, exactly like the iPhone 4 then.
Is it just me, or is the part above the screen smaller? On the current ones, they are equal. I noticed that in the new iTunes iPod logos for iOS4
All rummors indicate a front AND back facing cameras. If Apple throws in the RetinaDisplay it's gong to be a massive win.
In fact, I even heard Apple might even throw a data-only 3G chip inside, iPad style. How cool would that be??
@HighestRanked1
Even if it's only a retina display, this thing will sell like crazy.
@deedeedee Copy/Paste FAIL
Am I the only one to notice that the alleged camera hole is about the same size as the hole for the ambient light sensor that exists on current ipod touches?
@wollombi No, I notice that too, but it's not a hole, it's just an opening that's made of glass, so there's no hole, just a circle
@wollombi I noticed that
I will consider buying one if it has both cameras, and everything the iphone4 has except for cellular radio and GPS. Been holding out since theres nothing else on the market that gets as much support from devs and works decently. All I know of right now that is alright sorta is the Archos and its not that great.
Id like it if Cowon re-did their O2 PMP with a capacitive screen, 1ghz tegra2, 512-1GB of ram, android with marketplace, good camera on back and front, mic, speakers, usb, hdmi, and possibly a capacitive stylus then there would be some competition. OR if Microsoft decided to update ZuneHD to WP7 OS without the phone parts then that would be another device Id look into. Not saying there arent other good PMPs. Like I said COWON is probably one of the best out there but Im looking for an all in one and does it all smoothly and has support. Just so happens at the moment Apple is the only company putting a device like that out.
@EmGee, i dont think they can put in everything iphone4 has (without phone) into ipod touch, at this price point. One must remember iphone's retail price is $500-$600 including subsidy...
@grkhetan IPod touches are usually the price of a subsidized iPhone, having gps and cellular, and stuff adds the extra $200, apple wouldn't sell their iPods for any more than $299 (entry model)
@grkhetan
Really?
Isnt the 3rd gen itouch exactly the same as the 3gs minus the GPS, Cellular radio, camera and mic?
Thats what id expect a 4th gen itouch to be in comparison to an iphone4.
I mean yeah Id like it if they added the cameras and mic but then there wouldnt be much of a difference between itouch4 and iphone4 so they wouldnt be able to sell it to people as much because everyone would most likely buy a dumb phone and use the itouch4. I mean if you really want the phone parts then I guess people like that would buy an iphone4. Thats why they wont ever put a cameras or mic into the itouch4.
For realz this time?
I'm gettin this in Sept.

As mentioned above, how do we know this isn't an ambient light sensor? It could just be a round area of clear instead of black and not an actual hole in the glass. The touch is definitely long in the tooth, but let's not jump to conclusions.
@LIve2Lin I'm pretty sure they would know the difference between a hole for light sensor, and camera hole (or somerhjng hole that doesn't look like light sensor
This isn't a surprise the ipod touch has always been an iPhone without the phone
Awesome to see the FaceTime hole. Here are my predictions for the device: http://technologycharge.com/charge/2010/8/5/a-touching-formula.html
@deedeedee notice how only trolls that know nobody would pay attention to them repost the same shit over and over again?
Not to be a downer, but isn't that where the brightness sensor is?
@deedeedee - Unless you're only thinking as an Apple stockholder, I don't understand your logic. For the customer, this would be great!
I wonder how many people on carriers other than AT&T will buy one if it gets all these features.
Anybody remember last year at this time when there gadget sites were freaking out about spy shots showing ipod cases with a hole in the back, suggesting it would have a camera on the back? Then new ipod came and it didn't? No? Me neither
@SoulWeaponry Those were do to production error. I am 100% sure that it will have a mic and front facing camera.
looks more like the same ol' brightness sensor port from the iPhone/pod's of yore?
My wish for the new iPod Touch is for Apple to make a 3G version- much like the iPad +3G. Data only so I could forgo the expense of an iPhone as I don't use a phone enough to justify the cost. If not then I'll have to tote my MiFi around with it to keep connected
