ASUS Eee 30GB external hard drive fits the mold, may just be cuter than a button

Miniaturization is so... Cool (and pocketable)
@DaHarder
yeah considering its 7.5 cm by 9 cm, but stilll its not really that small :S
@TehSilentWolf
by 6cm* my bad
@DaHarder
Make it a SandForce SSD for that price, and we'll talk.
@DaHarder There are brands out there selling portable hard drives with 750GB with an affordable price. And I'm sure we would see 1TB or 1.5TB in 2011 in portable drives, so why is ASUS selling a 30GB hard drive? It just doesn't make sense. Most digital cameras now support HD video, what are you going to do with only 30GB of space?
@DaHarder Why not just get an SD card that's smaller and about the same price, I'm gonna have to call this one a big fat FAIL
@DaHarder
and the 500GB drive you can get at newegg for $60 will finally speak
"Look at that dumb F*** buying such a small drive"
It's hard to tell from the picture how big it really is.
@questionexclamation
That's why there's a source link. 7cm wide, 6cm tall from what I can tell from the (confusing) diagrams.
It's about the size of a pad of post-it notes.
whew! its my bedtime!! goodnite everyone!
@Mr Hett Thanks for letting us know.
"It's easy to give ASUS a hard time about the million billion different Eee PC flavors floating around out there." if you are a moron. Then everything is "easy".
Palmdrive anyone? :P
@stefcio007
No thank you, the wife should be home any minute now =-)
j/k
And the benefit of this over a 32GB micro SD card with a micro USB reader?
@1dcd4674
None... except that it matches Asus Eee PC aesthetic.
@1dcd4674
Price?
according to your source link this device is likely pretty old and a lot cheaper than what you presented. i like it.
@Stengo
it's at least one year old: http://www.netbook3g.com/bon-plan/le-mini-disque-dur-30go-dasus-a-1229e
although i read it was meant to be an accessory for the eee pc 900, which would make it even older, i think.
@Stengo
and now it's at least april last year:

Are they just studderring. E... E.... E... External hard drive....
@ChuckBartowski *stuttering
@iKid
:o well now i know.
meh!
The important thing now is what is the speed of wire/read? If it can't beat a class 6 memory card then people should pass this up.
@cdf74dc9
correction: read/write not wire/read :0
@cdf74dc9
can you get a class 6 memory card for $32 ?
I won one of these over a year ago from ASUS... it is very cute. Talk about late breaking news!
I won one of these last year as well, and it is quite cute (mine's called FREEEBEEE)
hd_speed gives this an average read speed of 10.4MB/s and write speed of 10.7MB/s
Uh...I don't see what is so exciting about a 30gb drive for $30....when you can get usb HDD with capacities of over 20 times that for a little more than double the price. If this were SSD at the $30 price then there would be a little room for excitement.
This is an accessory of the EEE PC 900 and was discontinued long ago. When something is so old no one has heard of it anymore it becomes new again?
...not enough info... what size is it? How do you plug it in?...
Let me start by saying, I don't use this, but I see the point in it. I use a Xigmatek Lighter 60gb portable hard drive. I couldn't live without it.
I'm a grad student. I work with very large files that I need to 'carry with me'. I work on several different computers. A 4gb thumb drive doesn't cut it... not enough space.
An SD card doesn't cut it, because none of the systems I work on have a reader. Sure, I could get a reader and carry it with me, but that doesn't make any more sense.
My 60gb (even 30gb would work) portable hard drive is pocketable, offers plenty of storage space, and is powered via USB. If I recall correctly, I paid about $30-40 for it. Alternatively, a 64gb thumb drive will cost $100+. Unless you need the faster speed of the flash memory, a portable hard drive like this is a great alternative.
Another issue is that people here are confusing portable and external. At home, I have 2 external hard drives totalling 2gb. But they both require a power cord and are not exactly small drives.
This may be a slightly niche product, but it serves a purpose.
