Sanyo's VPC-CA102YL waterproof HD camcorder, your perfect accessory for visiting Sealab 2021
Sanyo isn't breaking out the hyperbole with this water-resistant full HD pocket camcorder -- that honor went to the DMX-CA100 back in May -- but the VPC-CA102YL does boast a spec sheet as impressive as its product name. We've got 1920 x 1080 / 60i video in MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format, 14 megapixel stills, an articulating 2.7-inch wide LCD, 12x dual range zoom on video, and 5x optical zoom on photos... and did we mention it's waterproof up to 10 feet under? Connectivity options include USB, mini HDMI for TV sets, and a SDXC card slot. Due out this month -- perfect for capturing the very last bit of Summer -- for a penny under $350. Product shots below, press release after the break. (P.S. -- 10 feet to the bottom of the ocean? Bizarro!)
SANYO Takes Underwater Full HD Video to a Whole New Level
1080 Full HD Videos and 14MP Photos from Ten Feet Underwater to the Top of the Slopes
CHATSWORTH, Calif., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- SANYO North America Corporation (SANYO), introduces a new waterproof Full HD (1920 x 1080) Dual Camera Xacti, model VPC-CA102YL, for active lifestyles. The new Dual Camera can be used to record over 480 minutes of 1080 Full HD video on a single 64GB SDXC memory card and 14MP photos from a depth of ten feet underwater. The camera will be available for purchase in August with an MSRP of $349.99.
Designed for any indoor or outdoor adventure, the VPC-CA102YL fits perfectly in the palm of the user's hand and is small enough to be carried in a pocket, backpack, or purse -- ready to be used at any time and in any weather condition. SANYO Dual Cameras use a convenient video format, MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, which makes sharing videos online, on blogs or on other multimedia sites simple. The media created can also be easily edited and exported to portable media devices. Photos and videos can be displayed in Full HD resolution on high definition TVs.
"Dual Cameras are packed with features and offer incredible flexibility," says Tom Van Voy, Vice President and General Manager of the Digital Solutions Division for SANYO North America. "This is the 'take everywhere' camera; water, snow, or land. Getting great HD video and still images is incredibly easy with the new CA102YL," said Van Voy.
The camera uses a proprietary "double-range zoom" feature for zoom operation while filming video with 12x zoom available from wide angle to telephoto for capturing distant objects (equivalent to 40mm to 480 mm zoom in a 35mm film camera). In addition, the High-Speed Sequential Shooting mode enables capturing up to 22 photos at 7 frames per second.
The VPC-CA102YL is stylish and compact with a yellow, vertical-shaped body with gray accents. The new SANYO high-speed image processing engine contributes to the small size.
Files can be saved to SD, SDHC or ultra-high capacity SDXC (up to 2Tb) memory cards. Also, there are multiple video and photo modes for flexibility in memory use. The battery will allow approximately 60 minutes of continuous filming time in Full HD mode.

Pretty good, but not for the price.
@Sil Don't you mean, bizarro?
Waterproof to 10 feet is kind of a joke unless you're just planning on snorkeling at the surface with the kiddies, in which case the police probably have some questions for you.
The screengrab is from Sealab 2021, not 2020.
@Thermos14
Don't you mean,
The bizzaro screengrab is from Bizarro Sealab 2021, not bizarro 2020.
@Thermos14 All clips from Sealab 2021 were re-edited and re-dubbed from the short-lived Sealab 2020 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sealab_2021
@Ross
However, Sealab 2020 did not have "Bizarro" characters, clearly limiting the picture to the realm of Sealab 2021.
@TKOtheKDR I'd love to find non-edited Sealab 2020 footage to settle this debate, but it's been los-Bizarro!
@Thermos14
Bizzaro! Bizzaro! Bizzaro!
@seanbob91 "Did you you #@!% him in his %#@* ?"
" Twice!"
1920 x 1080 / 60i video is NOT "Full HD. 1080p is full hd. Not "1080i".
@PaulRivers
So where does this leave 1440p?
@PaulRivers Please, there are going to be other sizes like 2K and 4K that are going to roll through and change what "full" HD means in the next ten years. Your eyes probably can't tell the difference between 1080p and 1080i outside of maybe fast action sequences.
@ddhboy How long has it been between standard def tv, and modern hd tv? Decades and decades.
There aren't going to be any more sizes for hd - there's already been a lot of talk about how supposedly you can't tell the difference on your tv between 1080 and 720 while sitting on your couch. What's the point in upping the resolution?
Anyways, 1080i isn't "Full HD". 1080p is Full HD. They're just lying. It's not like my comment is going to make a difference anyways, but if they want to put out a camcorder that does 1080i and call it 1080i, that's fine, but lying about it's resolution is just marketing bs.
@PaulRivers It's 1080i at 60 frames per second. If you read the rest of the spec you will find it's 1080p at 30 frames a second. Therefore, full HD as they claim.
@Den Well...err...well now this is embarrassing, lol. You're right - 1080p @ 30fps is really good enough to call "Full HD". I copy and pasted it, and Engadget doesn't say what resolution it does at 30fps, so...I stand corrected.
1080i @ 60fps is a little weird (who needs 60fps, but in interlaced format? don't you need progressive for action fast enough to find 60fps useful?) - but that's closer to a quirk than the outright lie that 1080i @ 30fps would have been. I stand corrected.
Bizarro!
@zangetsu2
bizzaro i love you bizzaro
@zangetsu2 I just fed turtle face a whole bunch of peanuts!
@commiebastard
I hate them all... except Turtleface.
@zangetsu2 I'm helping! Bizarro!
That'll go great with my Sports Walkman.
@kdilkington
+100 for k man pilkers
pilkie01, out
10 feet to the bottom of the ocean? Not so much.
I bought a Kodak Zi6 from eBay and it had broken mount threads. I got it for $50 bucks and took it apart and replaced the threads with a 1/4" nut.
Now I take it kayaking and it was soo cheap that if I get at least 5-10 times out of it I'll be satisfied.
Is this the cam Charles and Alli took to Jamaica?
@foreignfez CTFxC FTW!
Haha. I noticed that too.
Also, any sealab is sure to be undertaken more than 10 feet of water. ;)
YES!YES!YES! Now I can record porn underwater!
Stupid mailbox heads.
/I also have the strength of 5 gorillas.
1080i? would like to have 720P/60 & 30 instead..
BEST SHOW EVER! I actually wasted way too much time re watching the first 2 seasons and pilots. Things went south when Harry Goz died.
He was a comic genius and a lynchpin of the show.
I think this is the camera Sanyo had Charles Trippy promote
*BAWK BAWK* "Wanna make em jealous?!
Bizzaro Stormy:"I am bizzaro Stormy"
Stormy: "Im regular Stormy"
I loved that show......(up until season 2)
I bet it does not have a mic input. Without an external Mic input it is worthless to me.
TURTLEFACE! :D
I just recently bought the Sanyo CG-102 which is the non-waterproof version of this camcorder and I have to say, I am very impressed. Even more impressive was the price, bought it through Amazon when it was on sale for $163.
First off, it is a Full HD cam. It records at 1080i/60fps, 1080p/30fps, 720p/60fps, 720p/30fps, and VGA. Outdoors or with good lighting, the results are stunning. Indoors or at night, not so much. For movie mode, zoom is 5x optical, for still pics, 12x optical. Speaking of stills, this cam really surprised me with its image quality. It's not going to replace your DSLR but it makes for a better than average zoom camera. I do have to mention this cams lack of optical image stabilization, it comes with the less effective digital image stabilization but it isn't good enough. This tiny lightweight cam is going to going to produce some very shaky vids unless you use a tripod.
For the price though, it really can't be beat. It's priced like a Flip HD, and comparables, but produces far better vids and stills. If the low light and lack of OIS turn you off then you can spend $500 for a better HD cam. I'll take my sub $200 Sanyo thank you very much.
Maximum of 10ft resistance?? Do they expect people to be using these in a kiddies paddle pool only? Thats 3 meters maximum! I think they have failed if you cant take these scuba diving because there isnt any point otherwise is there? Unless your a pedophile at a waterpark maybe. Its a shame because the camera specs look nice. Fix the housing and it might be a good product. I think they best call this a splash proof camera and nothing more.
@peterniss It's guaranteed to 10ft, I'm sure you could take it to 30ft without problems....of course, voiding your warranty in the process. :)
Oh and Sealab rocks btw. RIP Harry Goz.
bizarro im helping bizarro!!
I'M HELPING! I'm helping yooooooooouu.
I've got the predecessor to this (the CA-9), and it's pretty good for all-weather shooting, although low-light recording takes a hit.
That would be great for our family canoe trips. I might have to get one.
Could be nice to film the under-water-world.
Ahahahahahahaha
I gave turtleface a whole bag of peanuts during the movie
