Canon's X Mark I Mouse triples as calculator, numeric keypad, fame attractor
We know, we know -- you're practically married to your existing Razer or Logitech, but it looks like you may want to phone your lawyer and get the separation papers flowing. Canon -- of all companies -- has just introduced its latest critter, and it may very well be the most spectacular mousing device in the history of mousing devices. The unquestionably magical X Mark I Mouse is a wireless laser mouse underneath, but it also doubles as a fully functional calculator and a numeric keypad to boot. Bluetooth 2.0 is responsible for the connections, and the 1,200dpi sensor should please all but the most particular of users. It'll also play nice with both OS X and Windows platforms, leaving us with an inexplicable need to handle one prior to the scheduled November launch date. Oh, the price? A paltry £39.99 / €48.99 / $63, but really, you'd pay anything those blokes asked to have one of your own.

?!
@fais
This is awesome! Finally I can do proper math while sitting in front of a machine than can do a billion operations per second.
@Graham J
Well I guess it's better then using the on screen calculator. Cannon makes mice who knew?
@fais
It may not look useful for everyone, but I find it very appealing for cad users drawing on Laptops without numeric keyboards. It is possible to draw without one, but for me it dramatically speeds up the process, and while drawing mechanical parts, I'm usually calculating stuff i'm my TI-83. I will definetely get one of these when they become available.
@fais
Or you know... just get a mouse with re-mappable buttons and make one of them open calc on your PC
@fais If you are going to do this why not put the calculator display above the normal numpad on a keyboard for a far nicer design.
@fais
so where's the camera?
@fais
It even has a BS button! So you can make BS numbers! Like Enron!
This will go well with one of those new wireless bluetooth keyboard without a number pad. But makes me wonder if the thing is flat or rounded, and is there any safeguard against accidental touches from the ball of the palm.
@fais
"Cannon makes mice who knew?"
I totally heard that in the voice of George Costanza's Mom.
@fais
Not sure if I want a mouse sliding around while I'm trying to crunch numbers. Seems like a design fail. It will either be too much friction so that the calc works well while leaving the mouse hard to slide around, or there will not be enough friction which will be fine for the mouse but will leave the calc sliding around when trying to crunch numbers.
@fais
This will be popular if Canon do it right. Many laptops do not have a proper number pad. It is better to have such kind of mouse than bringing a number pad with us all the time.
@fais
I'm disappointed already... there's no 14MP camera on it. I'd be satisfied with at least 5 or 6MP camera on it.
weird
Genious!
...
...
Now 15" laptop keyboards don't need to be made so small to fit a Number-pad along the side. Just have your mouse to double-up as both, and it's even on the same area if your right handed and you are aren't you?
Why the f*** did they need to do that?
@LCDBox
They didn't need to but what the hell right lol its kinda cool and kinda lame at the same time haha
@LCDBox
why the hell did no one else build that before?
I like it, although it's too expensive.
yuk!
Why?
@s2m0 That's how I feel
@Baconbits This would have been cool in 1996.
Where does the paper go in?
@sharkync
o.O Next invention: a mouse that scans documents.
Dibs.
Now they just need to add Skype phone functionality to it with a mc and speaker on the opposite side and they'll have quite a combo on their hands :)
@chudilo I'm hoping they're adding a 800x480 capacative screen, microphone, speaker. On the inside I would like to see a snapdragon, bluetooth, 3G/4G and a place for a SIM-card and micro-SD.
Now that would be a usefull mouse!
@Daanmannetje Well it already has Bluetooth. So your list just got shorter! And if it was sim enabled, could you get a discount for it from AT&T under contract? Haha, I can already see us paying data plans for our mice...
Anyways, I personally think this is pretty cool, just bc of the fact that you can have one less thing on you desk. A TI nspire can be overkill sometimes. And the onscreen keyboard is just painful, especially while doing hw on a laptop. So, I could see this as a pretty good idea. Also, think of the shortcuts you could use it for in certain programs... 3ds max, CAD software, video editing, audio editing.
Accountants rejoice!
@williamthrilliam
Yep, I'm sitting for my CPA now, and as an accountant, I always work with a laptop, mouse, and number pad. Combining the calculator,num-pad, and mouse results in less clutter, but I have grown partial to my Logitech performance mouse and would be hard pressed to give it up.
@jeff0529 Yeah, I'm still using the firm supplied keypad that plugs into the serial port. Yeah, I know what you're thinking, but I love the "click" feedback it gives, the new usb keypads are way to cushy.
@williamthrilliam
Same story here. I am doing ACCA, and for all of those people who are saying "but you are sitting right in front of the damn computer!!!", trust me, using a "calculator program" for basic arithmetic calculations is clumsy and time wasting.
Unless something requires MS Excel, I will rather whip out my trusty Casio fx-85 MS calculator than fumble with a program.
I guess this mouse for those people who buy a laptop, which don't usually have dedicated numpad. Instead of buying a mouse 'and' a separate numpad to lug around, you could just buy this. The calculator is just an added feature.
@williamthrilliam
Especially if you can click a button, and the number on the monitor is "typed" into the input box.
Awesome. Looks good, quite retro yet modern.
I love the fact that a simple calculator is put in an input device for a vastly superior calculator.
Next up: steering wheel gets extension to serve as unicycle, world rejoices :)
How innovative. Not as innovative as paper though
What...no scanner/fax functionality?
I sure hope I could bind those numpad for my DOTA games
o.O who would buy this, honestly!
This product is probably geared toward users like me that prefer not to have a numeric keypad on our keyboards...but I have to say this doesn't interest me in the slightest.
Don't computers have calculators already?
It's like reminding all the professional photographers out there that their cell phones can take photos so there is no need to lug around those heavy lenses.
Usually when a big and conservative company like Canon put out something like this, they have done their homework. I am surprise that Logitech or Kensington didn't come out with one after all these years. It's not for me but I can see a pretty large market for it.
Any one notice the "Send" button? My guess that the key you hit when you want to send whatever on the display to your current input field.
Good. It's like this one (only with more quality, I bet)

@proconsumer
O man that's bad!
@fais
hama quality :thumbsup
:S
How embarrassing.
Bad case of "Hardware Design by Committee?" You'd think a big company with aeons of experience like Canon would be immune to gaffes like this.
Man this is awesome. If you don't understand why, then don't worry about. I hate not having a number pad and usb ones are just clunky. And if you think it'll speed up data entry between moving your hand from mouse to keyboard (or for left handers), then that's just more frosting on the cake
I want one simply because there's a key that says BS on it.
I think any device with a "BS" button is suspect
@revlayle
Don't worry, it's user dependent...
we have another contender for a crapgadget
