HTC EVO 4G Froyo .6 update seems to fix early adopter issues
We know our readers: obsessive early adopters who'll stop at nothing to have the latest and greatest software on their handsets. Just like us. Unfortunately, sometimes we get burned in the process. But the community is nothing if not tenacious. Now we've got an apparent "fix" for anyone who updated their EVO 4G to the Android 2.2 Froyo build discovered on HTC's servers, only to find out that they were running a non-final build. User Pojoman over at XDADevelopers just upped the .3 to final .6 RUU from Sprint that should correct any woes. Based on the enthusiastic feedback we're reading we'd say that this is good news. Nevertheless, the usual disclaimers apply before hitting the source link below, especially with HTC already acknowledging that a fix is on the way via official channels. Yeah, we know, blah blah blah.

HTC is on top of their game right now....the droid incredible update is probably already done, with verizon doing their own testing, considering most other sense phones have 2.2 already.
@B3astofthe3ast
I wish my hero got 2.2 :(
@JonnyB if XDA can punish a G1 with 2.2, there should be hope for your Hero.
@B3astofthe3ast 2.2 is a must have when it boosts the performance so much. Glad HTC kept up the pace but I still think they could do it even faster.
@JonnyB http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/2059-cyanogenmod-600-for-htc-hero-gsmcdma-alpha-preview-alpha-0710/
CyanogenMod 6 (Froyo) for HTC Hero (both GSM and CDMA). I've been running it for about a month now on my GSM Hero. I know it says alpha release, and to be fair the notification and trackball lights don't seem to work 100%, but other than that I've noticed no bugs, and I swear with JIT enabled it's so much faster than even the stock HTC Sense ROM was. Froyo is tasty.
@lol1 android is so ugly And does that make a white iPhone 3gs?
@lol1 android is so ugly
the white one is exclusive to Best Buy. That's why it isn't advertised. It is up to Best Buy to promote it. Nice try fail troll.
Btw we are all waiting till wp7 is released so we can see you cry over it.
Just like my White 3GS. oops
@bodie Hey, will the Cynoagen Mod work on my Droid Eris??
@engadget
Please maintain bans, or more efficient bans than the ones you currently administer; clearly, they suck.
Thanks,
Everyone that visits engadget
@OlliX
You fanboy need to die! Android is nothing like the wall garden that you smoke on.
@cdf74dc9
Don't get me wrong! All I wanted to say is that a white iPhone isn't something more unique than a white evo.
And on the fanboy thing: Got a droid and a wildfire on the way, so stfu
we get it top tear phones getting froyo... every day the same update
@lol
Sad sad boy.
@B3astofthe3ast : Fool me wont fool me again, Engadget! :)
@OlliX You got a wildfire? Sorry to hear that ;)
@fpad77 Half the time spent on these updates in carrier testing. Promise you Verizon is holding back the Droid Inc. update...
I'm very impressed with Sprint and HTC for the way they handled this issue.
Compare this to Apple who would never release a buggy device or software build. Oh wait
@rhimbu Must everything be about apple?! What does this have to do with them?
@rhimbu
jesus christ, why?
apple wasn't even mentioned in this article. you're an idiot.
Poor HTC...everything they try to control winds up leaking out. Make their users very happy too.
@rhimbu Except for that Snow leopard account deleting bug, oh wait....
(Yes I know it was fixed, just making my point)
@rhimbu it was not buggy all the features where not added dumb ass
@rhimbu yes they do they call it the beta version they just released a new beta version update lol.... and guess what that evo update was? OMGEEE a beta shut up you choob....
Neither was Jesus but you just ha to bring him into it didn't you?
More Froyo Deliciousness for the EVO Crowd... Nice
(in Peter Griffin's voice) Thank, God..........
Fake. How could the perfect phone need an update, let alone a fix?
/s
@pika2000 Yeah, at least we should have gotten some free bumpers.
@pika2000
that /s meant sarcasm?
EVO is not perfect but its close :P
I updated my Evo moments after it was posted after following along on xda for about an hour while Pojoman uploaded the file. While my Evo on .3 was running just fine, obviously getting "back on track" was preferable to possibly being left behind. This RUU does the trick. Backup your data before you do it, but otherwise, it works better/easier/faster than the .3 leaked unofficial update did.
@Edge767
The leak kept all my info and did not need a backup. Does this one wipe all info?
@frodecatur
Unfortunately it does... Back up your data.
Thanks Pojoman... Now we can all be back on track... until someones figures out how to root .6 that is....
@rizo Just root before the update then get the .6 based roms from xda.. Everyone is already running .6 rooted roms as of 8/2/2010
@dsstrainer
I looked around and couldn't find a root for the .3 so I figured I might as well get back on track cuz someone will eventually root .6.
No way. I'm not doing this ok. I'll wait for the "official" .3 to .6 update. Thanks, but no thanks.
@drnoi
Actually this update is the same method they will use if you take your Evo to sprint. From following the thread over at XDA, I understand that this RUU is the one HTC sent to sprint for them to use to update those who are on .3.
Proud Eco owner.
Look, Apple f up. It didn't even effect every iPhone, we have move past this. For the sake of android & iPhone fanboi's. Everyone fucks up sometimes.
BTW @lol1 android is so ugly
STFU or... GTFO.
I've had an iPhone for 3 years and I'm about to jump ship to an Evo. Not because of the Antenna issue or the 'walled garden', simply out of boredom. Without widgets, and that asinine notification system, the iOS platform has just gotten stale for me. But my iPhone 2G will still be a great iPod touch substitute, and it already has the camera!!
I find it slightly humorous that the photo of an EVO 4g was taken by an iPhone4.... did engadget give up on using proper photographing equipment... don't get me wrong, I know its a decent camera and that they arn't going to be posting 12+ MP images on there website... but still kinda funny, right :)
@robamb2002 That isn't an iphone taking the picture. Its my roommates htc touch pro. That picutre wasn't taking by engadget and sorry I lack photography equipment.
It's amazing how many users are crying about not getting .6 right away, when they KNEW the risks of updating a non-official update last Friday. I updated last Friday, but knew damn well that it was risky. I'll wait for the official OTA "patch" from HTC. By the way, I've got no issues on .3
I would not get any of the 2.2 updates if you like to stream music on your phone. 2.2 ruins streaming audio quality due to a broken AAC+ codec. Google/HTC/Sprint have all dropped the ball on QA here. See: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=9308
I dont think any early adopters had any issues with .3 and .6 came out 2 days later.. so there wasn't even time to find an issues
I've been running .3 and haven't noticed any problems. Frankly, I'm in no big rush to upgrade to .6.
I will buy an EVO right after someone on XDA ports over WM6.5.x. FTW
@Marbo100 Seriously? Why do you want an operating system that is about to lose major support? I doubt anyone is working on that port
@ACEACEACE
Then I guess I won't be buying an EVO.
