Token multitouch screen shows us the future of DJing, today (video)
Think you know multitouch surfaces? Think again. We've just come across a video demo of the Token multitouch, erm, pedestal, which seems to have come straight from the future. A clear sheet of glass that beams out video from your computer and accepts touch inputs in return, the Token concept has been designed by a chap named Rodrigo hailing out of Chile. We know it uses a rear projector for its video, but other construction details are scarce at this point; what's really special here, however, is the way he combines it with a Traktor Pro controller titled Emulator, turning a few intelligent finger swipes into a kickass light-and-sound show. See it on video after the break.

makes me wanna pursue dj'ing.
daft punk needs to own this nowfor more futuristic disco goodness.
Yeah, that's kewl indeed..
Is it really usable?
Well, that depends on which type of music you play,
and HOW you play it!
Cheers.
No it doesn't. It shows off the future of entry level DJing for when they take programs like this and throw them on touch screen laptops and tablet PCs for people who can't afford real equipment.
Professional DJing will still have some iteration of the turntable 50 years from now. First it was the record player, than it was CD decks, now you have MIDI controllers (yet all three are still in use depending on who the DJ is and where they're playing). There will always been the need for a tactile feel and some actual feedback. You'll never be able to cut and scratch with a fucking screen.
So awesome! I used to spin on turntables way back when, but would gladly have complemented my old Technics 1200's with a setup like this.
Kenny goo is right. Some sort of tactile device is still useful, but I would love to have a configurable setup like this as the mixer.
OH man is that THE perfect set-up for a club DJ or WHAT!?!? no lights needed - etc..schweeet
Am I really going to be the first to say it looks like it belongs on the bridge of the TNG era Enterprise as it might have been re-imagined by JJ Abrams?
Come on folks your falling down on the job here.
@Charles Mahan I was thinking the same thing... I'd say almost something from inbetween the TOS and TNG (movie era) as re-imagined by JJ for the new...err old(?)...movie era.
Holy shit that is AWESOME!! I'm no DJ but love dance music, but that just looks AMAZING. And you can play the same as using vinyl but also do more!!!
I'm confused is the display being projected onto the glass, or is the display integrated into the glass. If so why hasn't this kind of technology be prototyped into being integrated into glasses. I've literally dreamed of having a pair of glasses that could also work as a HUD while having the display integrated into the lenses.
There's no magic here, and this isn't new.
Look at 1:02. There's a projector on the floor. He's using a rear projection glass screen with a touch layer. These things have been available for a while. Popular at trade shows. The rear projection straight into your retinas is annoying after a while. There's even a film for storefront glass to make these: http://bit.ly/dDlvNB
Okay, as a VINYL DJ I'm REPULSED by this shi*
This is WORSE than SERATO, which I am grudgingly going to use.
in TECHNICS we TRUST!
As a former club DJ with a pair of 1200s, this device is heresy... But then again, I think anything not vinyl is heresy. Having said that, I did start messing around with something similar to Serato (which I'd never head of until today) years ago (like 15 or so) when vinyl albums were becoming scarce.
I do have to say that the effect of this touchscreen setup is awesome. The lack of tactile feedback though... Even CDs were anathema to me when I was spinning. Would I own one? YES! .... but I'd feel dirty :)
@tdenton1138 Just remembered the name of the gear I used: Final Scratch
I think the best part is that all of the people can see through it and see what he is doing. It makes for a cool lightshow all by itself.
I had an iPAd application that looked like this, it was called dinosaur something!
It would be sick to have virtual turntables on a horizontal table for all us scratch DJs, but there are way too many flaws in that like having no motorised platter and needing a physical crossfader. Whichever way I look at it I will always go back to serato on my 1210s. Still I'm sure you will have no problems pulling women when they see you mixing it up on a huge sheet of glass!
Yeah, but it is still projector bound, what I really want to start seeing is a normal glass plane with graphics being displayed on them without the need for any other periphery devices!
it needs to be able to pop out a drum pad...
This is COOL stuff.
I was(/am) building something like this, darn he beat me to it, Big way.
Way to go!
omg! I think I need to change my underwear!! This just made me cum in my pants!
I'd want that to build computer interfaces designed by Michael Okuda.
Perfect hi-tek-space-setup:
3 pieces playing altogether:
- Token for music: http://vimeo.com/13724835
- VJBox for video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SM6Hb2T0i7Y
- Reflexus for dancers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsF6Q5tY4kw&feature=related
something like this on a underground electronic music festival would be awesome :)
