iPad gets Xvid AVI video playback with CineXPlayer app on iTunes, hell freezes over
Now here's a surprise. Apple isn't exactly known to be super friendly when it comes to video compatibility, and we can sympathize to an extent. However, for some inexplicable reason, Steve's brethren decided to give this CineXPlayer app the green light for general consumption, thus finally allowing iPad users to load up their stash of Xvid AVI files -- sans conversion -- via iTunes. While this is worth a quick celebration, it's still rather absurd having to resort to underhanded apps for such basic functionality -- something that we've been able to do natively on many other tablets and PMPs for years. Let's not also assume that this free app is staying for good, so grab it while it's hot. Video instructions after the break.

Freedom tastes Great.
@WhoIsCalvin
Hopefully this is a sign of awesome things to come. If Apple relaxes those walled garden standards a bit, we might see a more open and option-filled platform.
Kudos!
@WhoIsCalvin
OMFG IT WORKS. THIS IS GREAT!
WOW! .mkv would be nice but this is great!
Now I can get my anime fix on the go!
Oh wait, I don't have an iPad._. derp.
How about the iPod Touch =(?
@WhoIsCalvin
i finally got my confirmation that god exists.
@WhoIsCalvin
Yep Apple is dam right un-American, freedom FTW.
@WhoIsCalvin It's free too...wow double whammy
@WhoIsCalvin Wow a 500$ dollar gadget can play a 10 years old format!! What a freedom!!!
@WhoIsCalvin
Lol I love the people pretending they have an iPad or better, those that dont complaining about this or putting it like this is the first of its kind.
Yxplayer, oplayer (or whatever the name is) HD, and there's another player that already does this. I don't really use too many avid any more, usuAlly just stream my shit, but lol at the people late to the party. Avi supports been available in third party apps on the iPad for months, next.
@WhoIsCalvin
"Again[2009]DvDrip[Eng]-FXG.avi"
Someone likes to pirate xD
@Hyakku I know, it's almost like I have traveled back in time. And "OMFG WTF BBQ IPAD PLAYS XVID DIVX FILES, TAKE THAT STEVE JOBS." became news AGAIN...
@Nonok
LOL!
I just noticed that too!
@Outsider I just searched the app store on my Ipod Touch and it doesn't show up as available.
@Hyakku
Yxplayer and oplayer are both shit players. They can't play majority of avi's smoothly and without jagged lag, the few that they do, are out of sync. Cinexplayer is actually far superior and plays your average downloaded avi tv shows, although not x264 yet. That's the difference.
@Mike10010100
Keep on dreaming!!
@mahmut Well yes, it can. So what's your problem?
@Hyakku
EXACTLY!!! and it DOES do mkv and a ton other formats.. AND has subtitles support.. AND they are promising 720p support on next update... where has that news been?
@WhoIsCalvin Looks like someone's feeling a bit of pressure from a little robot... What's next? Access to the Real internet with Adobe Flash?
one of the things i dislike about about iPads (lack of codec support) has just been remedied... kudos devs
@skyblaze
correction: remedied to an extent
*waits for MKV*
@skyblaze
YXplayer does MKV but it's software decoding so don't count on high bitrate or high res movies being played back smoothly.
@skyblaze They should get Rock Player on iOS4 it plays MKV also and it plays it pretty good I have it on my Nexus One. Android had this same problem like iOS until Rock Player came out like 2 weeks ago.
@jdog25 rmvb and mkv?
@jdog25
wait, wha? you're lying. you have to be. you know how long i've waited for...
*snatches up Nexus One and downloads*
@skyblaze Pretty much nothing plays mkv except a computer.
@Shalabi If an iPad/iPhone/iPod isn't a computer, the definition must have changed lately.
Sure marketing speak would have you think it's a "Media Consumption Device", but those 1's and 0's add up pretty quick on those iDevices.
@Shalabi,
And Rock Player, for Android.
@theJML Ultra mobile devices such as smart-phones/PDA's like the iPhone/Droids/Blackberrys, iPod Touch, or iPad are not considered PCs. They do not have the processing power or designed to be a workstation or server. They do not have the network capabilities or memory to be used like a PC. They do not have a full size keyboard - as they are intended for light input tasks - texting and e-mail replies.
@skyblaze
oPlayer and yxPlayer have been out for awhile now, and include MKV and full codec support.
oPlayer is more stable and can handle 720p mkv files easily, now if they would just fix their subtitle support...
Plus they both come with FTP servers built into their apps, so you dont have to transfer your media through iTunes. Both are available on the app store.
@Shalabi
MKV is just a container, supporting the container itself is not a big deal. Archos 5 supports it for example. Heck, I bought a PMP for $60 from China and it supports MKV.
What is more important than supporting the container, is supporting the codecs inside it, and being able to access hardware acceleration of the decoding process.
@skyblaze
Coreplayer is coming to iPhone 4 and iPad, it'll be damn sweet, under testing now, full avi and mkv (720p only) support.
@Almo
CorePlayer for iPhone OS has been "in testing" for 3 years now, with no updates or public beta. I would not hold my breath for a release.
@DoctarPeppar
The iPad version is ready, they're awaiting iPhone 4 orders from Apple to actually test it on there then release. It wasn't released earlier as they didn't have the APIs that ios4 brought along and something to do with OpenGL 2.0 ES. It's for real now... I hope!
I thought hell already froze over with Flash on the iPad?
@Jacob1
It will when you don't need to JB to install it and when it plays video smoothly.
@Jacob1
There are different levels of apple hell. This was just levels 2 and 3. Level seven is reserved for the people so slap a sticker of Tux on the back and install windows 7 on it then send a video of it to Steve Jobs.
@Jacob1 But the Flash hack isn't endorsed by Apple. ;)
@Jacob1 DOUBLE FREEZE!
Good stuff.
I think things will change for the app store now that jailbreaking is "legal".
The fuck? YXplayer has been able to do this for months now....
@DoctarPeppar
XY PLAYER Blows. I have never been able to play back any divx movies with out lag Audio going out of sync. Total Garbage. Have not tested this one but I hope it works better.
@DoctarPeppar Yes but that's an iPhone app; Cinexplayer's a native iPad app.
@iKid
You are Wrong buddy YX Player is native Ipad. Still sucks though..
@Kingjew
I never said it was good :|
Unfortunately CineXPlayer isn't really any better!
It won't handle high res stuff and it takes a shitload of CPU\ram just to watch standard def (software decoding obv)...prob takes a huge hit on battery as well. I'm just saying that this has been done before, so I don't see how it's news...YXPlayer has been in the appstore for awhile now -- it does exactly the same thing as this app and it is iPad compatible too...
@DoctarPeppar
Damn I was hoping for something that really works. Dr. Peppar you are 100% right. This has been done before. I guess this time they paid Josh to put the article up to give them some popularity. Waste of time. Boo.
@Kingjew
yxPlayer does blow, try oPlayer. MUCH smoother playback and can actually handle 720p MKVs.
@DoctarPeppar
Is it really such a mystery to you that the difference is that this is *officially* available through the AppStore while the other options have been jailbreak only?
You're obviously smarter than that, come on now.
@hey buddy
The fuck are you talking about idiot?
YXplayer IS in the appstore, and it has been for awhile now, and it works on the iPad in native resolution. It's basically the same exact thing as the app this article is about.
It DOES NOT require you to jailbreak.
Didn't I already say that?
Yeah I did, 3 comments above yours.
Moron.
