@Kurian Saber-Douche Tiger
AUD $31,222.92 incl. GST. That's my tuition fees for uni, for 3 semesters. AND I'M AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT!
i would love one but that is far too expensive for me at the moment. :( ill wait for the gen with 64 cores :D
I just ordered one and maxes out all the specs! Paid around $17k but will be fun!
@Nickmate liar liar pants on fire!
@shreyas of course mate, I already have an iMac!! No way IDE pay that for a Mac!! The max is like AUD$32k
Can you order just a 6 core then?
@andymac Ok. I suck. You can under the Quad Core Choice....
how much would it be to order the parts and build it yourself?
@warmonk
Much less.
@warmonk
How much do you think your time is worth in building and testing your own computer?
@pika2000
you could build a computer in 1 hour flat.
and as if your time is a precious as you make it sound, you wouldn't be friggin spending your time on the comments section of engadget.
@pika2000
We can use a small portion of the price difference to get somebody to assemble it.
May be you can't find anybody to do it in your place, but it is very easy for me to find such kind of person.
@Rockchan
Okay. So you can find a guy to do it for you. Try finding a guy to build and test 50+ workstations for your business, and see if the end result is going to be "cheaper." :rolleyes:
I repeat this again, there's a reason Dell, HP, etc have a business lineup. DIY home computers != business workstations.
Computers are machines, machines replace people. The biggest cost to most companies is their staff. Believe me, despite the high cost of the mac, it's still a lot cheaper than hiring an IT guy.
Business users wouldn't be buying Mac though, unless it's a design firm or coffee house or something.
Some business need to do actual work, so Windows+Office is king (and no, Mac Office isn't equivalent, with its lack of Access and such).
Why get a Mac Pro... when you could have this!
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/home/dream_machine_2010
It's 15,000 dollars, but it comes with dual 3.3 GHz 6 core processors, 24 GB of RAM, Blu-ray, 4.4 TB of storage (400 GB of which is SSD), liquid cooling, 3 Nvidia GTX 480s, and THREE 30" IPS monitors!
Although I guess if you're using a Mac Pro in the first place, you're probably using it more for the OS than the hardware.
@MastaQ You got it genius it is because of OS and Pro Apps. Now please stay smart for another few more seconds.
@Raytem
people like you are the reason why people like me need medication.
@MastaQ
Try suggesting liquid cooling to anyone with a workstation and be prepared to be laughed out of the room.
@MastaQ It's not just the OS but the Apps. I only have an Octocore with 16 gigs of RAM 2 30" HD monitors and 18Tb of storage. As for the OS, with Spaces, I can keep Final Cut , Motion, Shake, After Effects, Photoshop CS4, Soundtrack Studio Pro, Color, email and Chrome, all running at the same time in separate windows switching back and forth while running all apps without even as much as a hiccup. So IDK much about Windows except for the fact it doesn't do Final Cut Studio. Otherwise it looks like a kick ass rig.
$17k just like that. Goddamn.
I know it's not a gaming computer but why HD 5770? Wouldn't some powerfull GPGPU-cards be more useful?
YEAH 10 extra cores to do nothing on a mac!
@Geez93
Really?
Final Cut Studio, After Effects, Maxwell Render, Modo, Cinebench and Mathematica all made use of the 8 cores in the previous Mac Pro.
They are even faster with 12 cores...
@Michael Scrip Please don't bring those names here, these Fandroid never heard of these applications. If it's not made by Google and if they have to pay for it, they don't know it.
@Raytem
Do you think you are stupid to continue mentioning fandroid or Google, while Android is a mobile phone OS and Google is mainly a search engine on PC? Do you actually realise that we are discussing a computer? Those terms you continue to use do not directly related to a PC or a computer operating system.
@Raytem
@Michael Scrip
Oh i know the Applications!!
And it is not that simple: "oh i have 4 new cores so it has to run faster"
It depends very much on the application to use the cores and the one you just mentioned are made to run on 8 cores and unless any major software updates gets released these will only use 8 cores no to mention the 12 threads the mac pro has!
@Raytem Good one! And they probably never heard of Coen Brothers, Steve Sodderbergh, Walter Murch or the 9 out of 10 documentary films nominated for an Academy Award® all cut on Final Cut Studio. Not to mention all the Pixar movies (because Steve Jobs owns Pixar). But they sure can Google their names. ROFL
@Geez93 -- "And it is not that simple: "oh i have 4 new cores so it has to run faster"
Looks like it to me... this is where I pulled all those names of the applications:

It's a Mac Pro. It's not for your dumb ass you all morons. Only pros purchase it and Apple doesn't market it for your Fandroid asses. Please for god sake stick to your PC (Piece of Crap) windose and stay the F out of this. I have no idea why Engadget put this article in Fandroid Land. Now, since your not too smart selves can't take the truth just vote my comment which has burned your Microsoft ass, negative and send it to oblivion. It's a work station which is made for professionals who knows the value of OS X and runs Pro Apps. Again, NOT YOUR FANDROID ASS.
@Raytem
Yeah, if you post it again people will agree with you this time.
@Raytem you are either stupid or you know shit about every thing! Go away you are useless on this earth! Really!
1. Android has nothing to do with this!
2. If you know something about computers in general, you will realize this is the most expensive shit in the world. At this $$ you can get 1000 times more power! As an example 16 gigs of ram @ apple is 1700$ on newegg are less than 500$. This is what you get!
@Raytem
All the cores and pro apps in the world won't help you understand the difference between your and you're though.
@Raytem
I just curious to ask does "Fandroid" means people who support android? If that is the case, why you continue to use a term that is not related to a computer operating system?
@Rockchan
In this case "fandroid" quite specifically means "I am a ifawning idiot".
Why stick a gaming grade mid-range GPU in a workstation box? And the best offer is a 5870, again not a workstation card. I guess I'll never understand Apple.
Their expansion prices for RAM are equally bad, basically expansion prices on everything are atrocious.
No thanks, Apple.
@FMinus
Yeah, I would expect Quadro/FirePro video cards. My guess is that Apple is betting more on OpenCL than pro-specific features present in Quadro/FirePro drivers.
If i'm going to spend over 5 Grand ++on a new desktop i'm going custom all the way a Thermaltake level 10 Tower, EVGA Classified SR-2 MB,dual Intel Core I-7 980X extreme chips( which tiger direct throwing in a free 1600watt thermaltake power supply with each chip), 24 GB of corsair dominator GT though board can handle 48 GB of ram and dual ATI HD-5970 , a single ssd to boot OS with & 4 WD raptor HD just to be different... although my actual budget for building a new Desktop is $3,000.00 so actual components will be trimmed quite a bit
For that price, I imagine you could build a quad-cpu 6-core Xeon and the rest of the system.
@d3sc3nd3ncy
PC*
Lookd like an electro-shaving machine to me.
@Zeak Its because that's what you deserve for computing. More then that and your brain will hurt.
I don't get these pointless wars between Apple fans and everyone else.
I mean, if I really wanted a Mac pro, then good for me. Its a great (even if slightly expensive) product.
Otherwise, i'd get a Windows powered computer, it's not such a big deal.
@Dan Jo Exactly. Plus the price differential between something like a Dell Precision is very little- I specced one to match the base spec dual processor one and it was more expensive than the MP.
Does it change everything? Again?
@Checksum
Well it's a game-changer in that now you can pay $1000 more for the same thing. That is the magic of Apple.
@HKCally
And if you touch it at the wrong spot you may get an electric shock :D

This isn't something I would ever want or need and the price is terrible, but if you offered me this or 3 juiced up Windows machines I would still take this
I can triple boot all 3 major OSs with a Mac, plus I've seen windows run smoother in boot camp on a Mac with less specs than a maxed out Dell machine. Even the guys at engadget seem to agree as they all primarily use Macs with multiple OSs
I don't care about the iPhone or the iPad or even the iPod, but I seriously love OSX. Windows has it's place in my life, but it's secondary to Linux and OSX
Ok, I said some positive things about Apple products. Now smite me almighty smiter!!!!
