RED Scarlet makes surprise cameo filming EPIC's fast focus
The two-second video after the break may not seem like much -- a RED EPIC S35 with a 85mm Canon lens changing its focus from a box at a distance to a hand being moved in front of the lens ("closer than close focus," according to "Fire Chief" Jarred Land). What's more interesting here is what was used to take the video. In the same forum thread that unveiled the footage, employees claimed it was shot using the RED Scarlet 2/3" and provided the above pic as proof: Scarlet is above, EPIC on the bottom, and a standard pocket camera capturing the moment. Not a lot to glean from the video and no definitive update on the production schedule, but hey, take solace in knowing a Canon mount for EPIC is ready and will be therefore presumably be available when the camera does eventually find its way out the door. Video and larger version of above pic after the break.

Big Brother is watching...
@liftedngifted1
WOW !!! looks like am gona buy it ......... if its something around 200$ !!!
whoa what...
I want my 2 seconds back
Unlike some of the guys above me, I think this video was a very rewarding start to my ice-cream-eating festivities.
RED FTW!
......too bad even at its low prices, I cant afford it ]=
What did Cinderella say when she left the photo store?
Someday my prints will come...
@skitzogreg There is a reason for going digital after all...
there is always room for improvement.
L lense is always a good thing
Ok, but what did they use to shoot the RED Scarlet 2/3" shooting an EPIC S35? Is it just cameras ad infinitum? AHHHHH
@Nitesh It's cameras all the way down, young man.
Ok, that's really impressive. I have this lens (it's a Canon 85mm f/1.2 L II), and it is the slowest focusing lens I own. On a normal Canon SLR it focuses 10x slower, or more, than it focuses in this video.
@dcormier People who don't understand how cool this 2 second video is don't own a slow focusing Canon prime. I totally agree, I've never tried the 85 but the 50mm 1.2 is so slow it's painful to focus. Now whether we will ever even see these damn RED cameras everyone has been waiting for, that's another discussion. I'd love to see real world testing.
@dcormier Considering you guys have these expensive lenses I am utterly surprised none of you can manage to use manual focus?
The first thing I learned but then again, back in the days manual focus was the only option.
@Andr Well, the video was about autofocus. There was no need to mention manual focus.
@dec Read the thread on reduser.net. You'll get a pretty good idea of why it's taking so long. These cameras are going to be really, really impressive.
What? a centithousands dollar camera with 4:2:2? with that weird redcode? and what a pointless 4k 5k 6k war? do they realize it should be a digital motion camera but not a digital still motion camera? they will sure make a lot of money from this Dslr like game but i would be interested to see will cinema adopt it beyond TV production and some weirdo movies, i know soderberg loves it and the facebook movie is being shot by it and pirates are in but its just not how a cinematography camera should be, i love Jannard, he risked, he succeeded and he moved the industry, but now after all of this delays i suddenly lost my interest in what they are doing. they didn't challenge the sony to lower the price of those monsters, they could but instead of a non-bayern patern sensor and Raw they run after resolution war, Hey Mr.Jannard we are still years behind global adoption of 4k projectors! make something for today's cinema but not tomorrow. and i assure you when 4k projectors are mainstream no one will use todays Epics, its a freaking fast evolving technology. and now they adopted apple like policies to don't announce anything, which is good, but the ones who shot behind genesis aren't like the kids who get lost between jobs word and get an orgasm when he says one more thing, they are Fuc*ing professionals. RGB algorithms aren't going to solve anything sorry, and contrast, ah contrast, those shadows, its not resolution war of Dslr's
@arash Now that i think i saw these policies will sell better, and thats what a business is about, yeah these will sell very very well
@arash
What a diarrheal discharge of horseshit. "a centithousands dollar camera with 4:2:2"? You clearly don't know WTF you're talking about. The Reds have never been 4:2:2. They aren't YCbCr cameras in the first place.
Then you're saying that when 4K projection becomes mainstream, a 5K camera won't be appropriate? Yes, brilliant. Oh, and if you'd done any reading, you'd know why Red went with one very high-resolution sensor instead of multiple lower-resolution sensors.
It's a good thing that ignorant people aren't their target market. Enjoy your interlaced HandyCam.
@arash Pirates of the Caribean 4 is being shot with Epics.
@Information Central Well its no wonder my comment gets down ranked and you didn't realize one world of what i am saying given the fact that they are selling well, and @ the other comment yeah i know that i said that in my first comment
@arash And just look, everyone is hoooraying after electronic focus on a non-cinematography lens, ARE YOU KIDDING ME? is it another gadget lost?
@arash And just look, everyone is hoooraying after electronic focus on a non-cinematography lens, ARE YOU KIDDING ME? is it another gadget lust?
@Information Central RED and its fawning fanboys are a cult. No dissent is allowed among so-called "RED Users." I take every outburst of gushing praise with a grain of salt.
The Scarlet's 2/3-inch sensor is much smaller than that of the imminent http://www.nexvg10.info, even though it will shoot at a slightly higher resolution. The Scarlet (if it every makes it to market) will cost over three times as much, and rather like RED/Oakley's overpriced sunglasses, their "modular" product line is simple price gouging. RED wants you to get addicted - hence the cult.
99% of Engadget readers will not be spending around $10k on RED's entry-level Scarlet camera with its requisite accessories. And among the 1% who do, newsflash: Weddings and corporate training videos don't need 2k resolution. Use that Handycam.
@zenviolence
there is a very large crop of possible Scarlet customers who wouldn't even think of buying any part of the Sony camera lineup because they don't want to risk jobs by filming with a consumer-oriented camera.
the nex is an interesting idea, but only for prosumers. the Scarlet is for real work and i guarantee you it will produce better quality images and video (even a shallower depth of field) than any $5k sony setup ever will.
while i am a RED fanatic, i tend to judge tech news for what it is. and seeing what this small company has accomplished, i am more than certain that their current Mysterium-X and Monstro sensors are the first wave of the future of imaging technology design.
This *will* change the market. Not only high end cinema.
@zenviolence 4:2:0 8 bit codec and 60i or 30p as my only two framerate options? Pass. And we'll have to wait to see whether it suffers from rolling shutter ala my 5D.
Fine call me a RED cultist. At least they understand that just about everyone is shotting 24p. Even for TV.
@imthatoneguy haha. *shooting* 24p. *shooting*. Not shotting.
@mosley
Pirates 4 is not being shot on Epic. It's being shot on MX equipped RED One cameras (13 of them in 3D setups to be exact).
For those saying the 5DMII is a better camera then the Scarlet because it has a larger sensor, that just isn't true. Sure you get a shallower-than-35mm-motion-film depth of field with the 5DMII, but don't bother getting your footage graded. The h.264 codec compresses the crap out of whatever you shoot.
I'm not bashing the 5DMII (I shoot with it at least a few times a week and it's great for what it is), but the bit rates and compression leave a lot to be desired. I shoot on the RED almost every week and think it's pretty good, but am looking forward to the new improvements these smaller form factors will bring.
@Information Central And red cults mark my words: Red will get eaten up in the highend market by Sony/Panavision/ARRI and in the lowend market by Sony/Canon/etc if they don't change their policies
RED Scarlet... Sounds Contagious, and potentially painful.
@DaHarder
Maybe if you're Canon or Arri.
I want one.
I'll stick with my $1000 panasonic tm700 that shoots beautiful smooth hd 60p video thanks!
@camerafan Do you know your camera is better than all of reds in one aspect?
Yes, enjoy your 28 megabit-per-second interframe-compressed, 4:1:1 video. Really advancing the state of the art.
@Information Central
you don't need a state of the art camera to shoot great footage, it's all about the person behind the camera.
@himynameisnathan
I believe he was mocking Arash for his earlier post. I also believe he was mocking him for suggesting that the Panasonic HS700 was superior for being 60P.
I personally am happy with the quality of many prosumer and higher end consumer cameras. You can almost always bypass compression with the HDMI out. I also am excited by the new Handycam though I am the biggest fan of its limitations in frame rate.(BTW it isn't interlaced it is 30P but saved as 60i so you can flag for other frame rates).
That said if I could afford RED I would go for it in a sec. The ability to record RAW and the image quality is better then the competition even for the price. Of course I will have to make do with my EX3.
BTW it is a mixture of the person behind the camera and the tech. The tech opens up more doors. I could do amazing things with a Pixelvision 2000, however after awhile anyone watching it but me would get fatigued. You may be able to get away with a feature. But when I want a shot I don't want the camera to be the one to get in hte way. Thats why I like Tech!
Red Scarlet= the GT5 of cameras
vaporware till it's in my hands
@thrilla from manila
RED has been shipping cameras for more than two years.
read around before you talk.
@pleaseinsertacoin
for realz? I did read around before I typed. I wasn't talking about the whole company. I was talking about the Red Scarlet. As stated in my original post Scarlet=vaporware till it gets into my grubby paws
Double cameras, oh my god. It's almost a triple camera!
@LloydChiro You just made my night.
This is insane, I want more!!
I'll have what she's having.
So is there no motor ring attached to the lens at all? Or is this completely controlled electronically? That would be pretty sick to have built in focus pulling on these new RED cameras with Canon L lenses. Could definitely be a challenge to the 5d/7d if these cameras truly deliver.
@dec actually you can see the focus ring doesn't move in the video so really this is completely controlled electronically it seems. Pretty slick. I'd like to see my 50mm 1.2 focus that quick.
@dec If you throw a Canon, Nikon or RED auto-focus lens on it the camera can interface with it the same way the native cameras can. New firmware patches will continue to add support for new lenses.
So what's the fast focus for? Does anyone shooting on a RED ever actually use auto focus? Doesn't exactly seem like a pro feature to me.
@Bashthebox It is sold as a hybrid Still/Video camera like the 5D/7D, except RED is much more of a "video" company.
@CmdX What, the Epic? That's what the Scarlett's looking at here.
